Oklahoma City Thunder History
The Oklahoma City Thunder were originally founded as the Seattle SuperSonics in 1967. The SuperSonics relocated to Oklahoma City in 2008 after qualifying for the NBA playoffs 22 times, winning their division six times, advancing to three NBA Finals, and winning the NBA Championship in 1979.
The Thunder are now the only major professional sports team in Oklahoma. After relocating to Oklahoma City, the Thunder qualified for their first playoffs in the 2009–10 season. During the 2010–11 season, they won their first division title and the following season they won their first Western Conference championship.
The 2011–12 season marked the team’s first appearance in the NBA Finals since 1996, but they have not yet won a championship since moving to Oklahoma City. The Oklahoma City Thunder's name comes from a reference to Oklahoma's location in Tornado Alley, and Oklahoma City being the home of the U.S. Army's 45th Infantry Division, which were known as the Thunderbirds.
The Thunder began their rebuilding process in 2019 after acquiring All-Star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and drafting top prospects including Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren. The new era Thunder qualified for the 2023 play-in game and won their first matchup, but ultimately did not advance to the playoffs after falling to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Following the 2023–24 season, head coach Mark Daigneault won the league’s Coach of the Year Award.
The team won their first NBA Championship as the Thunder in 2025.

Oklahoma City Thunder at Paycom Center
The Thunder have played in the same arena since Oklahoma City acquired the franchise in 2008, but it underwent several name changes before settling on Chesapeake Energy Arena in 2011. In 2021, its name was changed to Paycom Center(Opens in new tab).
But the volume and rowdiness of that college atmosphere has carried over into Thunder games, giving the metro's arena and fanbase the nickname "Loud City.” OKC has also taken to color blocking its crowd, giving different sections different colored shirts, a practice that has spread and become common among all teams in the NBA.

Glad to see the defense return. Great audience and fan support.
The game was great. Always a good time. My only complaint is the tickets were expensive considering where they were located.
I enjoyed the atmosphere a lot, but the seats were up really high and we had to keep getting up and down to let people in and out of the row.
The game was great! The storm chasers do a pretty good job of getting the crowd involved. I wish it could have been a little more hype and loud, but it was a great experience, good family atmosphere!
Always a fun time. Great game even though they lost. Great basketball played at the highest level.
I always have a great time at thunder games, But I do feel that I paid too much for the quality of seats we had.
I just love Thunder. Even in a loss, I am still a huge fan. They are a great team and I am so proud to have them represent Oklahoma. We always go early to watch the warm up and see Fisher shooting those 3 pointers. We never tire of watching the whole team. The atmosphere at a game is just incredible. The pre-game, timeouts and half time are full of fun. The players are #1.
It was our first experience at a Thunder game! It was so much fun! Our seats were pretty close, the atmosphere was so much fun and it was a great game. Had so much fun! Will def be back again!
I had a lot of fun. My seats were great. The entertainment was very good as we'll. Over all we had a wonderful evening.
Amazzzzzzzing, not a sports fan but loved the game
Was great game n win. Was alot of fun. Good atmosphere to watch game with. Loud city stayed loud.
I have been to several OKC Thunder games but this was by far the best game I've seen live. The energy in the arena was unreal as Kevin Durant scored 11 points in the final three minutes to total 46 points in the game.
The Thunder game against Sacramento was great! It was an exciting game to the very end.
Thunder games are always fun and enjoyable. Even when they lose I get pleasure and walk out with a smile and a happy memory. I enjoy the wins better but either way its great fun to be a part of the crowd and atmosphere at the games.
This was our first experience and it was great! We were able to see the game clearly and had no troubles getting in or out.
Great game, too bad the Thunder lost. Lines were a little long after halftime. I had to go back to my seat almost 5 minutes after halftime ended without my drink.
Great night, atmosphere and game!! Took my 7 year old grandson and he can't wait to go back :)
Excellent play by our Thunder against former Thunder player, Harden. KD was unstoppable and unflappable. Great fun!
I always enjoy the experience of a Thunder game. Most amazing fans and the enviroment is just awesome!!!!
Every Thunder game is great fun! They play hard, half time show is great too! I want to come back every time.
