Oklahoma City Thunder History
The Oklahoma City Thunder were originally founded as the Seattle SuperSonics in 1967. The SuperSonics relocated to Oklahoma City in 2008 after qualifying for the NBA playoffs 22 times, winning their division six times, advancing to three NBA Finals, and winning the NBA Championship in 1979.
The Thunder are now the only major professional sports team in Oklahoma. After relocating to Oklahoma City, the Thunder qualified for their first playoffs in the 2009–10 season. During the 2010–11 season, they won their first division title and the following season they won their first Western Conference championship.
The 2011–12 season marked the team’s first appearance in the NBA Finals since 1996, but they have not yet won a championship since moving to Oklahoma City. The Oklahoma City Thunder's name comes from a reference to Oklahoma's location in Tornado Alley, and Oklahoma City being the home of the U.S. Army's 45th Infantry Division, which were known as the Thunderbirds.
The Thunder began their rebuilding process in 2019 after acquiring All-Star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and drafting top prospects including Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren. The new era Thunder qualified for the 2023 play-in game and won their first matchup, but ultimately did not advance to the playoffs after falling to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Following the 2023–24 season, head coach Mark Daigneault won the league’s Coach of the Year Award.
The team won their first NBA Championship as the Thunder in 2025.

Oklahoma City Thunder at Paycom Center
The Thunder have played in the same arena since Oklahoma City acquired the franchise in 2008, but it underwent several name changes before settling on Chesapeake Energy Arena in 2011. In 2021, its name was changed to Paycom Center(Opens in new tab).
But the volume and rowdiness of that college atmosphere has carried over into Thunder games, giving the metro's arena and fanbase the nickname "Loud City.” OKC has also taken to color blocking its crowd, giving different sections different colored shirts, a practice that has spread and become common among all teams in the NBA.

It goes without saying how much fun an OKC Thunder game is. But to experience it during the playoffs is not to be missed. Between the amazing crowd and the free thsirts and the amazing basketball you couldnt ask for more.
Great fun staff very helpful just wish we had won.
Amazing game and great service! We loved every minute of it!

It was an amazing game. Awesome experience would di it again !
I've never been to a Thunder game and didn't have fun. Thunder Up!!!
Game #2 of the NBA Playoffs was outstanding. And, we lost in overtime. But still, I am so glad that I went and supported the Thunder. Had a terrific time.
From the time I sat in my seat to the overtime finish, I felt the Thunder at the Peake. I felt like a part of the game having a tee shirt to put on and supplied fan clapper! I'd like to thank all involved in the pre game setup for an amazing experience! We Are Thunder!
This was such a great event. Chesapeake Arena and the Thunder really understand how to make it a customer-focused experience.
Had a great time.....Fun night... The tie to Overtime was great but out come not so good...
Awesome game! Seats were worth the money and being at a playoff game Thunder Up
I go to several Thunder games a year, and this was by far the most exciting game I've ever been too, at any level for that matter.
I had an awesome time at the game. The atmosphere was amazing and crowd was LOUD!
One of the best experience of my life! Look forward to doing it again!
This game was exciting! Talk about the 6th man! There's no crowd better than the Thunder crowd!
Thunder games are so fun! The atmosphere is amazing and the concession and food options are wonderful! Everyone needs to go to a game at least once!
Great game. In fact everything was great except for the fact that my 5 year old son and I were unfortunate enough to sit behind some drunken fans with filthy mouths (Spurs fans). I try to raise my son in a way to protect his innocence, however I had to do a lot of explaining of words that I didn't think we were ready for yet. Teachable moment. Non of this was the fault of the Thunder and we will be back. I have brainwashed him early to be a huge Thunder fan and at 5 he can name all of the players and their numbers. I think it is funny that his favorite player is Andre Roberson and his T-Ball number is now 21.
Game was fun and exciting, never a boring moment. I will pick better seat and go with a group next time
Facility was great, game was great, handicapped access in the arena is great & handicapped parking is virtually nonexistent. All city owned parking has been sold to the high rollers. There is no shuttle service & no parking.
