Oklahoma City Thunder History

The Oklahoma City Thunder were originally founded as the Seattle SuperSonics in 1967. The SuperSonics relocated to Oklahoma City in 2008 after qualifying for the NBA playoffs 22 times, winning their division six times, advancing to three NBA Finals, and winning the NBA Championship in 1979.

The Thunder are now the only major professional sports team in Oklahoma. After relocating to Oklahoma City, the Thunder qualified for their first playoffs in the 2009–10 season. During the 2010–11 season, they won their first division title and the following season they won their first Western Conference championship.

The 2011–12 season marked the team’s first appearance in the NBA Finals since 1996, but they have not yet won a championship since moving to Oklahoma City. The Oklahoma City Thunder's name comes from a reference to Oklahoma's location in Tornado Alley, and Oklahoma City being the home of the U.S. Army's 45th Infantry Division, which were known as the Thunderbirds.

The Thunder began their rebuilding process in 2019 after acquiring All-Star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and drafting top prospects including Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren. The new era Thunder qualified for the 2023 play-in game and won their first matchup, but ultimately did not advance to the playoffs after falling to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Following the 2023–24 season, head coach Mark Daigneault won the league’s Coach of the Year Award.

The team won their first NBA Championship as the Thunder in 2025.

Oklahoma City Thunder at Paycom Center

The Thunder have played in the same arena since Oklahoma City acquired the franchise in 2008, but it underwent several name changes before settling on Chesapeake Energy Arena in 2011. In 2021, its name was changed to Paycom Center(Opens in new tab).

But the volume and rowdiness of that college atmosphere has carried over into Thunder games, giving the metro's arena and fanbase the nickname "Loud City.” OKC has also taken to color blocking its crowd, giving different sections different colored shirts, a practice that has spread and become common among all teams in the NBA.

This visit was an early birthday present for my son. We live 100 miles away & chose the BOK because on previous visits & events, it has always been an awesome place to visit. My son & his friend had a blast watching the game. My husband, daughter & I rounded out the trip & we all had fun! Thank you so much for providing family-friendly events that we can all enjoy.

Best anniversary ever! I took my husband for our anniversary. We are hardcore Spurs fans but we live in Oklahoma City due to him getting station on Tinker Air Force Base. It was an awesome game! #GoSpursGo The seats were pretty amazing for the price we paid.

  • OKC is a great place to catch a game!

by MITFlunkie on 4/10/15Chesapeake Energy Arena - Oklahoma CityRating: 4 out of 5

I'll preface this by saying that I am lifelong Spurs fan (and Spurs season ticket holder owner). That should serve only to underscore my unbiased opinion. I've been to a Thunder game twice now (playoffs and regular season), and I've had a great time on both occasions. The fans are quite lively but still very courteous. I'm used to the snide jeers and boos in my direction (one lady actually hissed at me!), but it's all ribbing in good fun and added to my experience. It's hard to say which is the livelier home crowd - Spurs or Thunder, but I'll take my bias privilege here and grant OKC recognition as the 2nd or 3rd best fan base in the league. ;) Obviously, the basketball quality is paramount here, and in that respect, the Thunder do not disappoint. They always give a spirited effort and play an extremely good and enjoyable ball game. If you have the opportunity and enjoy the sport, I highly recommend experiencing a game here. Perhaps the only downside may be price, these were some of the more expensive tickets that I've bought; coupled with that, I had to jump through a few hoops to get tickets as a Texas resident.

by jennjb on 3/27/15Chesapeake Energy Arena - Oklahoma CityRating: 5 out of 5

Thunder games are always a great buy no matter who their opponent is. The players come out and play with heart and enthusiasm. The energy in the building is amazing. Watching on tv is nothing compared to seeing it in person.

  • Great family date

by alieh on 3/21/15Chesapeake Energy Arena - Oklahoma CityRating: 4 out of 5

This was a great trip for parents with teens. Our kids are 16 and 13 and they loved it. No need for cell phones or FB because the atmosphere was exciting with the noise, music, cheers, dj, entertainment during timeouts, etc. Never a dull moment and we ALL enjoyed it equally as a family. If you want something fun for the entire family (especially teens), this is perfect.

I bought these tickets for myself and my son and we had such a great time. He was able to dance with one of the hype men and gave a few players high-fives after the game. It was such a great experience for him.

by iwantseasontics on 1/4/15Chesapeake Energy Arena - Oklahoma CityRating: 5 out of 5

We have gone the last 4 years to the Thunder game on NYE and really enjoyed this year's game. It was high scoring and exciting all the way through. I would recommend this event for anyone who likes basketball, Thunder and celebrations. I recommend staying overnight at a nearby hotel to be able to enjoy the midnight fireworks.
