Oklahoma City Thunder History

The Oklahoma City Thunder were originally founded as the Seattle SuperSonics in 1967. The SuperSonics relocated to Oklahoma City in 2008 after qualifying for the NBA playoffs 22 times, winning their division six times, advancing to three NBA Finals, and winning the NBA Championship in 1979.

The Thunder are now the only major professional sports team in Oklahoma. After relocating to Oklahoma City, the Thunder qualified for their first playoffs in the 2009–10 season. During the 2010–11 season, they won their first division title and the following season they won their first Western Conference championship.

The 2011–12 season marked the team’s first appearance in the NBA Finals since 1996, but they have not yet won a championship since moving to Oklahoma City. The Oklahoma City Thunder's name comes from a reference to Oklahoma's location in Tornado Alley, and Oklahoma City being the home of the U.S. Army's 45th Infantry Division, which were known as the Thunderbirds.

The Thunder began their rebuilding process in 2019 after acquiring All-Star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and drafting top prospects including Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren. The new era Thunder qualified for the 2023 play-in game and won their first matchup, but ultimately did not advance to the playoffs after falling to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Following the 2023–24 season, head coach Mark Daigneault won the league’s Coach of the Year Award.

The team won their first NBA Championship as the Thunder in 2025.

Oklahoma City Thunder at Paycom Center

The Thunder have played in the same arena since Oklahoma City acquired the franchise in 2008, but it underwent several name changes before settling on Chesapeake Energy Arena in 2011. In 2021, its name was changed to Paycom Center(Opens in new tab).

But the volume and rowdiness of that college atmosphere has carried over into Thunder games, giving the metro's arena and fanbase the nickname "Loud City.” OKC has also taken to color blocking its crowd, giving different sections different colored shirts, a practice that has spread and become common among all teams in the NBA.

I've been to a few regular season Thunder games, but this was my first playoff game. It was much more exciting than any other game I've been to, and it was cool that T-Shirts were given to every single attendee. Of course, it helps that we won to close out the series against the Mavs! Thunder up!

by LovintheThunder on 3/17/16Chesapeake Energy Arena - Oklahoma CityRating: 5 out of 5

My husband and I purchased these tickets for our daughter for Christmas. We had an amazing time! The energy in the place was great. The facility was very clean which is important to me being that I'm in health care. The event workers were friendly. All in all we couldn't have asked for more.

  • The THUNDER!!!

by NISHAKC39 on 3/14/16Chesapeake Energy Arena - Oklahoma CityRating: 5 out of 5

Drove down from Kansas City.. This was our family's first time at an NBA game.. Just spectacular! The arena is huge, clean, clean bathrooms which, I was very impressed. The food was reasonable and large portions, for a family of four We only spent $40 on food and it filled us up! The game was so awesome, we never got bored.. They kept us well entertained with the cheerleaders, mascot, music and crowd participations.. It was so much fun, we will definitely be back.

  • Go Thunder ‼️

by ThunderFan1121 on 1/5/16Chesapeake Energy Arena - Oklahoma CityRating: 4 out of 5

I truly enjoyed the atmosphere in the area during the Thunder game. The entry process was a bit irritating when it came to purses & putting items in the bowl. It's easy for people to drop or forget items, that workers then just place in their pockets for keeps. People with purses should be able to go through any door/line. Anyhow, I had good seating & sat in section 110 behind the goal. However, I wish the lower seating was a bit more raised & slanted like the upper level so that it is easier to see around people who sit infront of you. My advice would be to sit in the 200s or very close rows in the 100s. I did not purchase any concession items but they looked quite tasteful; tall margaritas for $11 if you like drinks. Lastly, the Thunder WON that night :)

Always exciting and entertaining to go to a Thunder game, even in the "cheap seats."

  • Will Thunder Up More Often!

by DurantsBeard on 10/28/15Chesapeake Energy Arena - TulsaRating: 5 out of 5

I love Thunder games but I live in Tulsa so the travel can be a hassle. I am excited for this season - I won't miss any games because one of my friends started MotherRoad Travel - a shuttle that takes you from downtown T-town to OKC for the games. It has a bathroom on the bus and you can even drink beer on the way there. And there are group discounts. I will be Thundering it up everything time!

  • by bosslady1950h on 10/25/15BOK Center - TulsaRating: 5 out of 5

The game was exciting and I am so happy that the thunder won their home game and I liked the half time performances and the cheering on the crowd (the hype men).

  • Thunderforlife

by Thunderforlife on 10/17/15BOK Center - TulsaRating: 2 out of 5

I've been to many, many events at the BoK. Most go off without a hitch and is handled very well. However, this Thunder preseason game was horrible. The concessions were totally unprepared and ran out of simple things like straws, forks, nacho condiments, etc halfway through the first quarter. People waited in line for 30+min for pizza only to be told it would be another 20 before it was made. The BoK was totally unorepar d for this event.

  • We need more Thunder at the BOK!

by BrionneElise on 10/16/15BOK Center - TulsaRating: 5 out of 5

The game was fantastic! We really enjoyed the Thunder game here in Tulsa, as we do every year when they come. Thanks for giving us such a great show! It was nice to have KD back and healthy this season! Looking great guys!
