Oklahoma City Thunder History

The Oklahoma City Thunder were originally founded as the Seattle SuperSonics in 1967. The SuperSonics relocated to Oklahoma City in 2008 after qualifying for the NBA playoffs 22 times, winning their division six times, advancing to three NBA Finals, and winning the NBA Championship in 1979.

The Thunder are now the only major professional sports team in Oklahoma. After relocating to Oklahoma City, the Thunder qualified for their first playoffs in the 2009–10 season. During the 2010–11 season, they won their first division title and the following season they won their first Western Conference championship.

The 2011–12 season marked the team’s first appearance in the NBA Finals since 1996, but they have not yet won a championship since moving to Oklahoma City. The Oklahoma City Thunder's name comes from a reference to Oklahoma's location in Tornado Alley, and Oklahoma City being the home of the U.S. Army's 45th Infantry Division, which were known as the Thunderbirds.

The Thunder began their rebuilding process in 2019 after acquiring All-Star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and drafting top prospects including Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren. The new era Thunder qualified for the 2023 play-in game and won their first matchup, but ultimately did not advance to the playoffs after falling to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Following the 2023–24 season, head coach Mark Daigneault won the league’s Coach of the Year Award.

The team won their first NBA Championship as the Thunder in 2025.

Oklahoma City Thunder at Paycom Center

The Thunder have played in the same arena since Oklahoma City acquired the franchise in 2008, but it underwent several name changes before settling on Chesapeake Energy Arena in 2011. In 2021, its name was changed to Paycom Center(Opens in new tab).

But the volume and rowdiness of that college atmosphere has carried over into Thunder games, giving the metro's arena and fanbase the nickname "Loud City.” OKC has also taken to color blocking its crowd, giving different sections different colored shirts, a practice that has spread and become common among all teams in the NBA.

  • Seats were amazing

by Smalltownthunderfan on 3/25/17Chesapeake Energy Arena - Oklahoma CityRating: 5 out of 5

The seats behind the goal on lower level are amazing definitely worth the extra money! Right next to the thunder girls and the atmosphere of the game is addicting! You get so close to the court that you can see the players personalities in a new way.

we try to attend at least one THunder game a month during the regular season. great fun. there is so much to do at the Chesapeake before and during the game. we ate at one of the Peake restaurants and it was delicious. there is something going on all game long for entertainment - all of the tv timeouts have some activity on the floor - games, giveaways, etc.

  • OKC Thunder rocks!

  • Magic finally wins in Oklahoma City after 9 years!

by MagicFan1234 on 11/16/16Chesapeake Energy Arena - Oklahoma CityRating: 5 out of 5

As a Magic fan living in Oklahoma City, as bad as Magic was playing this year, I never thought Magic would win here which they actually did! It was a great game and I am impressed with the Thunder fans giving Serge Ibaka a standing ovation and praising Serge for the game winning shot instead of booing him!

Great venue, awesome employees. From the moment you walk in, from gate personnel to food service, everyone is nice, smiling and attentive. The food needs some work, though. Yikes.

  • THUNDER UP!!!!

by Taylor2008 on 11/3/16Chesapeake Energy Arena - Oklahoma CityRating: 5 out of 5

Great Game!! Russ was off the chain. It is definitely worth paying more $$ for better seats. It's a great experience seeing the game up close & not needing to watch on the jumbo screen. Go Thunder!! Still a fan!!!

  • Way to go, Thundet!

by BirdmanFloyd on 11/2/16Chesapeake Energy Arena - Oklahoma CityRating: 5 out of 5

The Thunder showed us how it's done by defeating the LA Lakers in Game 3 of the 2016-17 season! My seat was great and the view of the floor was good. I loved it!

  • Great game

by BVOMARK on 10/31/16Chesapeake Energy Arena - Oklahoma CityRating: 5 out of 5

Seats were really good for the price and the game is much different down where we were compared to the nosebleeds.

  • I love the Thunder!!!

    by Woohoo1 on 10/19/16BOK Center - TulsaRating: 3 out of 5

I hated the minister that did the opening prayer. I thought ministers were supposed to be open-minded and non-judgmental. This was definitely not the case. The "prayer" was so biased and anti-police I wanted to leave. This was a basketball game! Players should come to play basketball and fans come to watch basketball, not hear a political prayer, pro criminal, lets blame the police for his criminal behavior. So SHUT UP AND PLAY!!! I was glad all the players on both teams stood for the National Anthem (sad we have to pay attention to that now). I wish Westbrook would have played more. And Adams and Kanter. But I get it, it's a pre-season game!

We took our Italian foreign exchange "son" and his friend from Italy to the game. We all had a great time, and the boys loved it! Security was very slow, so we almost missed the entire first quarter. Arrive early!
