Oklahoma City Thunder History

The Oklahoma City Thunder were originally founded as the Seattle SuperSonics in 1967. The SuperSonics relocated to Oklahoma City in 2008 after qualifying for the NBA playoffs 22 times, winning their division six times, advancing to three NBA Finals, and winning the NBA Championship in 1979.

The Thunder are now the only major professional sports team in Oklahoma. After relocating to Oklahoma City, the Thunder qualified for their first playoffs in the 2009–10 season. During the 2010–11 season, they won their first division title and the following season they won their first Western Conference championship.

The 2011–12 season marked the team’s first appearance in the NBA Finals since 1996, but they have not yet won a championship since moving to Oklahoma City. The Oklahoma City Thunder's name comes from a reference to Oklahoma's location in Tornado Alley, and Oklahoma City being the home of the U.S. Army's 45th Infantry Division, which were known as the Thunderbirds.

The Thunder began their rebuilding process in 2019 after acquiring All-Star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and drafting top prospects including Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren. The new era Thunder qualified for the 2023 play-in game and won their first matchup, but ultimately did not advance to the playoffs after falling to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Following the 2023–24 season, head coach Mark Daigneault won the league’s Coach of the Year Award.

The team won their first NBA Championship as the Thunder in 2025.

Oklahoma City Thunder at Paycom Center

The Thunder have played in the same arena since Oklahoma City acquired the franchise in 2008, but it underwent several name changes before settling on Chesapeake Energy Arena in 2011. In 2021, its name was changed to Paycom Center(Opens in new tab).

But the volume and rowdiness of that college atmosphere has carried over into Thunder games, giving the metro's arena and fanbase the nickname "Loud City.” OKC has also taken to color blocking its crowd, giving different sections different colored shirts, a practice that has spread and become common among all teams in the NBA.

The only negative I can relate is the poor condition of the men's room during the game.Especially the floors, they were were slick from all kinds of liquids. No attendants in sight.

It took forever to get into the event center. Wish security and the lines would be separated better and more organized. The event center itself is very pretty and loved how the seating was set up.

  • Thunder fan!

    by Rockabella918 on 10/6/17BOK Center - TulsaRating: 3 out of 5

I was extremely disappointed that the venue was not more accessible. I was attending the game with my son for his birthday. I am not sure what the issue was but had to stand in line for quite some time and missed the entire first quarter. Very disappointed. When you pay good money for tickets and buy them in advance, I don’t expect to have to wait over an hour to take my seat. I visited Oklahoma City on numerous occasions to watch thunder at the Chesapeake center and never had this issue. Fix this problem!

  • GREAT IN THE TULSA BOK

by cruisejunkie on 10/6/17BOK Center - TulsaRating: 5 out of 5

So thankful that the Thunder comes to Tulsa. I am old and it is hard to get to OKC. This way I can at least see the Thunder...

  • Thunder game was great, getting in not so much...

by getittogetheralready on 10/6/17BOK Center - TulsaRating: 2 out of 5

We arrived at 6:30pm and didn't get through the doors until end of the first quarter. Yes, the doors were open at 5:30pm, but I work until 5pm and you can't have one entrance for 16,000 people. The Chesapeake Arena has 3 entrances; BOK needs that many to accommodate the fans too.

Bokcenter always does things the right way. Keep it up.

  • Incredible Thunder Night!

    by divaspray2 on 10/6/17BOK Center - TulsaRating: 5 out of 5

It was an opportunity for my big brother to celebrate 50 years of employment at American Airlines. There could not have been a better way to celebrate than the "thunder" way! It was something he would never forget! It didn't matter that it was preseason -- celebrating a milestone along with celebrating your local team is an incredible opportunity. Thank you to the Thunder organization for making this an unforgettable night. So glad that they were playing in Tulsa Oct 3.
