Oklahoma City Thunder History

The Oklahoma City Thunder were originally founded as the Seattle SuperSonics in 1967. The SuperSonics relocated to Oklahoma City in 2008 after qualifying for the NBA playoffs 22 times, winning their division six times, advancing to three NBA Finals, and winning the NBA Championship in 1979.

The Thunder are now the only major professional sports team in Oklahoma. After relocating to Oklahoma City, the Thunder qualified for their first playoffs in the 2009–10 season. During the 2010–11 season, they won their first division title and the following season they won their first Western Conference championship.

The 2011–12 season marked the team’s first appearance in the NBA Finals since 1996, but they have not yet won a championship since moving to Oklahoma City. The Oklahoma City Thunder's name comes from a reference to Oklahoma's location in Tornado Alley, and Oklahoma City being the home of the U.S. Army's 45th Infantry Division, which were known as the Thunderbirds.

The Thunder began their rebuilding process in 2019 after acquiring All-Star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and drafting top prospects including Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren. The new era Thunder qualified for the 2023 play-in game and won their first matchup, but ultimately did not advance to the playoffs after falling to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Following the 2023–24 season, head coach Mark Daigneault won the league’s Coach of the Year Award.

The team won their first NBA Championship as the Thunder in 2025.

Oklahoma City Thunder at Paycom Center

The Thunder have played in the same arena since Oklahoma City acquired the franchise in 2008, but it underwent several name changes before settling on Chesapeake Energy Arena in 2011. In 2021, its name was changed to Paycom Center(Opens in new tab).

But the volume and rowdiness of that college atmosphere has carried over into Thunder games, giving the metro's arena and fanbase the nickname "Loud City.” OKC has also taken to color blocking its crowd, giving different sections different colored shirts, a practice that has spread and become common among all teams in the NBA.

  • OKC Thunder Exhibition Game

by Juxt on 10/10/18BOK Center - TulsaRating: 4 out of 5

The game was great! The seats were on an aisle, so there was a lot of traffic throughout the entire game blocking the view. Now I know where to select better seats for the next event.

I purchased a ticket for someone to enjoy the game. The website did not offer the option to gift a ticket thus my guest did not get to see the 1st quarter of the game.:/ It would be beneficial for this option to be made available for the OKC Thunder Fans.

We love watching and supporting the thunder. Would love it if they played in Tulsa more often!

  • Disappointing experience

    by AdamB1803 on 10/10/18BOK Center - TulsaRating: 2 out of 5

This review isn't about the Thunder but rather the BOK center and Ticketmaster. First problem, 2 of our 3 seats were double booked. We had to go to the box office and miss the first 10 minutes of the game. Second, the concession stands were extremely slow and then didn't have multiple items from their menu once you finally got to the counter.

  • Ticketmaster

    by Tiffany521 on 10/10/18BOK Center - TulsaRating: 4 out of 5

Game was great, I was glad I was able to get tickets to see the OKC team in Tulsa. However, fees on the tickets were outrageous. If you really wanted to go you had to pay double the advertised price due to fees. Rather than sending me the tickets in my email, I had to go through 4 different Ticketmaster screens to get to them. So beware. Normally they are emailed directly so I wasn’t worried about getting them pulled up in advance. Once we got there, cell service was very in and out due to all the people using the towers. It took so long to get through all the different screens we missed half the intro.

  • great OKC experience

by selection7 on 4/22/18Chesapeake Energy Arena - Oklahoma CityRating: 4 out of 5

The top row where I was seated was a little hot though, maybe 80 °F, and if you want the home basketball fans to be loud, a sleepy temperature is not recommended. Understandably, heat rises and it felt like it was cooler down on the lower floors. Decent leg room, relative to other arenas, and the shoulder to shoulder room was a bit tight, though I've experienced worse. The whole experience felt professionally run and things went well.

Friendly fans and staff and loud, just need a few more additions and it would be perfect.

  • PLAYOFFS!!

by OKCFAN18 on 4/21/18Chesapeake Energy Arena - Oklahoma CityRating: 5 out of 5

We sat in loud city and it definitely lives up to its name!!! I thought we would have to watch the Jumbotron most of the game, but no, you can still see the players just fine.. Only if there was a replay, or someone in front of you got up did you have to watch it! We sat in sect 325 row R

The thunder and cavs game was a great game. If though we lost my son was happy the cabs won and that’s all that matter. Can’t wait for next year we will be there again for sure.

  • Fun event for the family

by Ronye on 1/30/18Chesapeake Energy Arena - Oklahoma CityRating: 4 out of 5

  • Great game.

by Ducksoup105 on 1/3/18Chesapeake Energy Arena - Oklahoma CityRating: 4 out of 5

The game and food were great. We had the gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches. We did experience a seating problem. My daughter is confined to a wheelchair. We were able in the past to purchase 2 companion seats and 1 accessible seat. The last few seasons we were only allowed to purchase 1 companion seat and had to purchase a single elsewhere. The past few seasons we were able to use the chair that the wheelchair replaced as long as no one sitting in the section objected. This game however we were not allowed to do this and necessitated either my wife or myself to make our way to row N which is not easy for us. This time the other 6 people in the section had no visible disabilities or problems walking. This just rubbed us the wrong way.

  • Mavericks v Thunder New Years Eve

The venue is first class. Great staff of helpful people .

  • Fun!!! Fun!!!

by bpeach1980 on 1/3/18Chesapeake Energy Arena - Oklahoma CityRating: 5 out of 5

The games are always so much fun! They had arm bands for every one when we got to our seats. They were so cool! When the lights went out or low they would blink orange, blue, and white which of course are the Thunder colors. Man, it was awesome! Everyone kept saying how cool it was! I live in Arkansas, and try to go to at least one game a year because my favorite NBA team is the thunder.
