About

Over the course of his career, Will Sheff has released ten albums that have given the front man of esteemed indie rock band Okkervil River a reputation as one of the greatest working songwriters in the country. As Sheff and his shifting lineup of players have traveled the world many times over, they’ve made fans ranging from Lou Reed to Barack Obama. Praised as “One of indie rock's most ambitious thinkers” (Pitchfork), Sheff released his debut solo album ‘Nothing Special' in 2022 to critical acclaim from The New Yorker, NPR, Uncut, Pitchfork and more...with The New York Times saying it “Harnesses both the glow of poetry and the gravity of hymns.”

Rocked hard, but not what I expected

by Diegs45 on 5/21/10The Fillmore - San Francisco

I think that I should've probably looked at reviews of the concert before attending because though I knew that there would be a good amount of Roky songs in the performance, I also expected to hear some songs from OR. Unfortunately, it was all from Roky or their new album so I didn't hear any songs from OR. I was a little bit disappointed because I came cause of OR, but like I said, I should've read reviews of the show before getting tickets. The show rocked, but I could tell that I was not the only person in the audience that expected more songs from Will and the gang (disclaimer: I only stayed until the first song of the encore). Leslie and the Badgers performed right before and they did a great job. I'll have to keep an eye on them in the future.

    Get there early, Wilco fans!

by TallerThanPenguins on 7/7/09Mountain Winery - Saratoga

Currently touring with Wilco, this Austin, TX band is actually one of my favorite finds over the last two years. Black Sheep Boy (and its "appendix"), Stage Names, and the Stand Ins are a phenomenal trio of albums that the band fully delivers on in their live shows. While I felt a recent solo show from lead singer Will Sheff (Cafe Du Nord, SF) meandered a bit into singer-songwriter self-indulgence for my tastes, here the band seems to serve well in keeping him focused enough on delivering a more cohesive and powerful set. Unfortunately over the past two years I've largely experienced Okkervil River touring via festivals and supporting other bands (plus a quick SXSW '08 set) so I've yet to see a full headlining show from them! However, judging from the reception they received from the Wilco fans at this particular show, the additional exposure is worth it. I wish them the best and will resign myself to support anything that brings more fans into the fold, but seriously guys! Headline an SF club already! At any rate, Wilco fans would be well advised to arrive on time for this current tour, lest ye miss an amazing group!
