Such a great show with different types of dance & art. So cool
I was very, very excited to return to the Paramont theater, it is one of my most favorite venues in the bay area. I took my daughter-in-law and good friend to see the ballet, Luna Mexicana. I’ve seen this ballet several times at the Paramont theater pre-Covid. I arrived early as usual only to find a very very long line outside the theater and not moving. My daughter-in-law went to the front of the theater to see why it was taking so long to get through security/Vax card/ID checks? This was 20 minutes before the performance was to start and no one was being allowed into the theater?? Once the line started moving-very slowly and we finally got our turn there were only two people checking our vax cards/IDs, and two more people in front of them to scan our tickets and allow us into the theater. It was AFTER 2 PM when we finally got into the theater, we went to get a glass of champagne to start our celebration and enjoy the ballet. There was no communication from any of the staff giving A 2 MINUTE WARNING -you better hurry up and get in your seats the show is going to start whether you just walked in the door or not. We thought we had time to grab a couple of glasses of champagne, we really couldn’t believe the Ballet would start on time when there were 50+ people waiting in line to get into the theater behind us….. we got our drinks headed to door three only to be told we had to wait until the first segment ended and there was clapping. The lines just kept getting longer and longer with people at all the doors on the first level waiting to enter the theater. We asked why we were not able to enter and they said no one could go in because the performance had already started. Many of us told the ushers we didn’t even get into the theater until after 2pm…. No one opened the front doors until 2p.m., that was the time on the marquee as well! it’s supposed to start at two not open the doors to patrons at 2P??? Very, very dissatisfied, disappointed there were not enough staff to handle the check in but most importantly why did the doors not open until 2 PM? Once into the theater we had front row seats and we were able to enjoy the rest of the ballet. The show was magical/magnificent and it was great to be back to the theater. I only wish we could’ve all enjoyed the first part of the ballet??? Terrible, terrible, planning on the theaters part! I think there should’ve been some kind of compensation for missing a portion of the show.
Great show. Loved the energy and attention to detail. The interpretation was refreshing and enjoyable. Only wish that all performers were brought back on stage for applause. Folklorico dancers, Aztec and trio.
The show was fantastic. I was transported to my early childhood. The concept of the “Happy Birthday” celebration was spot on, which demonstrated the transition of the death and the living.
Varied and exciting. Music snd dance and theater. Loved it all. Would have liked a program though to know what it is we were watching
What can I say this play was fabulous loved the costumes the dancers the message. The audience participation with their children in full costume a great cultural experience. I was reminded of my deceased family members and how roll they played in my life. Thank you for sharing your art with me
This is the third time I come to the show and it is always an amazing show. The ballet company puts on a great show and Danza Mexico is hands down one of the best folklorico groups in the region (this is coming from a 10+ year folklorico dancer/teacher) My only negatives were that it seemed a bit shorter this year and that I missed the mariachi, live music alway elevates any show.
We really enjoyed last Saturday's Oakland Ballet performance. Most of the dances were well-performed and held my interest, which is actually rare for me at dance concerts; probably because most pieces were about 5 minutes in length. Still, I would certainly attend again.
second half did show off the skills of many of the dancers and was enjoyed!
First time I've seen the Nutcracker and was very impressed with the whole production. Would highly recommend.
Oakland's version of the nutcracker was a joy to watch. The costumes and dancing was very good, The venue (Paramount) was good because it seemed any seat was close to the stage. I was particularly surprised by the orchestra and choir ensemble..very nice.
Great show! Beautiful costumes and sets - definitely recommend!
Took my daughters to see the Nutcracker for the first time. It was a nice production and the girls enjoyed it.
We've been attending the Nutcracker at the Paramount for many years. This last show was, overall, the best production yet.
My daughter had a wonderful time. It was the beginning of an annual tradition.
The performance was wonderful! It had great choreography - I especially like the variety besides the basic ballet partnering moves - and showed the lovely lines of the dancers. The introduction of the mice earlier in the show was an excellent idea - it gripped my 6 year old son and 2 year old daughter's attention right away. In other Nutcracker performances, my kids' favorite part involved the mouse king and it normally lasted all of about 2 minutes. This extended mouse exposure kept my kids enthralled all the way till intermission. The fabulous costumes with the snowballs, the candies, the mice, and the nutcracker PLUS the bonus of live music kept even my 6 year old enjoying the entire show(my 2 year old fell asleep at intermission - par for the course). Special kudos to the choreographer who was able to shepherd the kiddies onstage during the show without looking like he was trying to herd cats. This was the best Nutcracker I've seen yet, and I've seen many. It was also beautifully affordable.
We had a terrific time watching The Nutcracker play at this most amazing Paramount Theatre. No doubt we'll do it again next year!
I've seen the Nutcracker at a few different venues. This was a lovely version - modernized just a touch. I did miss a couple of the traditional things, but it was very enjoyable.
I know, bah-hum-bug. I hate to do it, but here's my quick review: The Paramount is an incredible retro theater. The Nutcracker performance by the Oakland Ballet was just so-so. The principal ballerina gave the most solid performance...the rest seemed quite amateurish. A lot of wobbly spins and jumps. The music could've been a bit louder--not sure how the acoustics are limited in this theater. Nonetheless, I gave it three stars because it did entertain and the sets were well done. The snack bar was also reasonably priced. Overall, no matter what the show, I say go to the Paramount just to see the theater. **Note: We had wanted to see the SF Ballet Nutcracker but the tickets were ridiculously priced. So this definitely offered an affordable alternative to take my 3-year-old daughter.
It was great. The costumes were beautiful and the performers wonderful. The story was changed a bit but liked it even more because of it.
