    An Exceptional Performance!

by DRoujansky on 1/13/16Aventura Arts & Cultural Center - Aventura

The Aventura Arts & Cultural Center is a perfect location for a show. It is on the small side, as theaters go, giving it an intimate feel. Norm Lewis has the voice to fill a large hall, but whether he is singing a standard or a Broadway song, his command for the music is phenomenal. Utilizing piano, bass and drums from the University of Miami's music department was the perfect compliment to his voice. Following the show, Norm met casually with the audience in the lobby and has no pretense. Talking with him is like talking with your best friend. He is interested in sharing with you and takes the time to take pictures with you should you choose to do so. He also sells CDs following the show, which cannot be purchased anywhere else in CD form. Be sure to take home some his music should you attend one of his show. The staff at the Aventura Center were top notch and quite accommodating should you have special needs. Don't miss Norm Lewis's show should it come to town. You won't be disappointed!

    Ellington at Christmas

by FancyJ on 12/28/14Apollo Theater - New York

My husband is the person who wanted to see this when we were in NYC recently. He absolutely loved it. He is a big jazz fan and an ever bigger Ellington fan. My 11 year old grandson and I enjoyed the first part that included music from The Nutcracker, but did not enjoy the second part as much as we are not big jazz fans.

Norm Lewis is the best voice to sing everything

by dreamgirlsfandeena on 12/28/14Apollo Theater - New York

This was my first time at the legendary Apollo theater and it was an unforgettable evening. The 15 piece jazz band played Ellington's Nutcracker suite while dancers from the Dance Theatre of Harlem graced the stage. The singing came in the second act and Norm Lewis was simply divine. Priscilla Baskerville and Lizz Wright are also very talented and gave wonderful performances.

    Ellington At Christmas - transporting!

by Anonymous on 12/24/14Apollo Theater - New York

A magic carpet ride away from the troubles of today into the sunlight of of Duke Ellington's powerfully entrancing music, performed with deep and vibrant commitment. Especially nice to see local talent on stage. Director David Berger clearly adheres to a standard of excellence. Not to be missed if it comes back.

    Absolutely Amazing

by missrealb on 12/19/14Apollo Theater - New York

I went to see the event because one of my favorite performers/singers, Lizz Wright, was part of the show. They all performed wonderfully and the jazz ensemble did an incredible job. My daughter and little cousins enjoyed the modern and tap dancer.

    sorry, not what I expected

by ValerieMabel on 12/18/14Apollo Theater - New York

I thought it was a dance show with a jazz swing. I keep reading the ad over and over again. I thought it was a Nutcracker performance with a twist to the music by Duke Ellington's band playing the music. The band playing the classics with a jazz swing. It was a music concert. The music was great. The Apollo was great but I would not have taken my kids.

My second time attending this beautiful show and all I can say is that my family and I hope that this will be an enduring tradition at the Apollo. Such historic music played with precision and vigor. Tremendous cast of players and talent! Couldn't happen at a better venue. LOVE THE APOLLO!

by Entertainmentophile on 12/17/14Apollo Theater - New York

I didn't know what to expect but anything with the title of Ellington as the theme, I'm there! Plus, I'm a huge Lizz Wright fan. This show was great. The music, the dancing, the singing...was very entertaining. And, it was my first time at the Apollo. I'll be back!

    Cool christmas Jazz and gospel

by SantaLovesJazz on 12/17/14Apollo Theater - New York

Ellington at Christmas was a fun and wonderful surprise. I had never heard his arrangements of the well-known Nutcracker Suite, so the music was really a revelation. The show used student dancers who were cute and gave it a recital type feel. The band was HOT! And in the second act the singers were really wonderful, especially the talented Norm Lewis. Really fun and a great event. I recommend it strongly.

    The orchestra was fabulous.

by ChooChi10601 on 12/16/14Apollo Theater - New York

I don't know what I expected. I guess I expected more ballet. More of the Nut Cracker Suite. The band was very good. The ballet was good. Some of the singing I could have done without.

    Bah Hum Bug!

by RedBeardNOLA on 12/16/14Apollo Theater - New York

Extremely disappointed to say the very least. Where was the Christmas in Ellington at Christmas? Not a single, not one, Christmas note of music. We felt like we were in church. And, still not a note of Christmas. If we had wanted to go to church, we would have gone to church. This should not have been performed at the legendary Apollo Theater. It should have been preformed at some predominately white church on the Upper East Side that was trying to bridge the racial divide. There was no soul, none with this performance. When the curtain came up and we saw a group of basically white male musicians (who were fine) we knew that we had made a mistake.
