About

Nine Inch Nails in Concert

It's hard to imagine alternative music without Nine Inch Nails' hand painting it all in black. But the now iconic band had some rather humble beginnings. Musician Trent Reznor dreamed it all up as an assistant engineer and janitor at a studio in Cleveland, Ohio, back in the late 1980s. This job gave him access to a space where he could record demos—all by himself. These songs would eventually take him on tour in 1988, even supporting a major influence of Reznor’s, Skinny Puppy. This led to the 1989 release of NIN’s debut album, 'Pretty Hate Machine,' a collection of dark, grimy industrial pop that wormed its way into the mainstream consciousness with singles like “Head Like a Hole,” and ended up peaking at No. 75 on the Billboard 200. Quickly, NIN would be everywhere, even landing a coveted spot at the first Lollapalooza in 1991. But this was only the beginning.

NIN’s second album, 1994's 'The Downward Spiral,' proved Reznor's star power in all of its doom and drama, especially with major hits like "Closer" and "Hurt." The accompanying Self Destruct Tour saw those songs transformed into wild and vicious performances, feeding the dark myths behind Reznor’s shocking NIN persona. But his last release of the '90s, 'The Fragile,' would show a slightly more introspective side with its haunting mix of beauty and brutality.

Into the 21st century, NIN has never quite stayed the same—in sound or in lineup—but Reznor's ferocity and fearlessness as an ever-evolving artist has. He’s consistently challenging the idea of electronic music and its ability to play with the psyche, even in its most minimalist form with ambient releases like 'Ghosts I-IV' and his own award-winning film score work with Atticus Ross. Still, NIN is every bit as steely and subversive as it ever was—as proven yet again with the experimental industrial rock of 2018’s 'Bad Witch' and its supporting Cold and Black and Infinite Tour.

Over the course of their career, NIN have brought countless venues to capacity, like Zappos Theater.

    NIN Shakes Up Cali

by Gonzo84 on 7/11/09Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre - Chula Vista

I couldn't believe I was on my way to yet another NIN/JA show. The night before I had seen them in Phoenix, AZ at the Cricket Wireless Pavillion, now I was onto see them in Chula Vista. I had only been to California once before, but only to San Fransisco, so this was not only a fun trip to see NIN, but also to see what southern California had to offer, since I've always heard great things. I also planned another day there, the next day after, driving up to a spot on the coast at Dana Point which offered a nice Blues Festival containing hot Blues artists like Keb Mo, Derek Trucks Band, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings and B.B. King. What a weekend. I was so excited to get away from the hot desert and do something original and original this was. The whole way to Cali didn't seem all that bad, I was more worried if my car would even make it. Sometimes I had to turn off the A/C just to make sure that nothing including my car overheating would prevent me from having the time of my life. The night before was so crazy. I didn't expect NIN to be as great as they were since I saw them three times on their last tour for "Lights In the Sky," which was too epic of a tour to beat. This year held a new drummer, a four piece now and less special effects. At the Phoenix show, the party started early and by time NIN got on, I couldn't control myself anymore. I'm one of those crazy cats you see in the audience going nuts and crazy and dancing all over the place just having the time of my life. I hate just sitting there and doing nothing, I don't go to concerts to just sit there. They had played a stellar amazing setlist and was going to be hard to beat, since I thought that was THE greatest show of my life. So after a bit of driving and a lot of nervousness, I finally reach my destination in Chula Vista. This time instead of the Cricket Wireless Pavillions, I was now at Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre. I sat out in my car drinking some beers and getting prepared. Street Sweeper Social Club was the opening band featuring Tom Morrello of Rage Against the Machine. The day before I caught the end of their act and it was decent, better than I thought it would be, since I didn't like the recordings they released from the studio work. As I was sitting out in the parkinglot, thinking, contemplating, I had no idea that I had missed a very special presentation of SSSC having Trent Reznor as special guest for an amazing MC5 cover "Kick Out The Jams," which is one of my favorite songs ever. It must've been because Trent's birthday would be the next day, cause that's awesome that he would collaborate on a wonderful and powerful song such as "Kick Out The Jams." I'm still pissed I missed it to partying out in the parkinglot. Once time came around for NIN to hit the stage, I made my way to the Amphitheatre. I couldn't wait for what was instore. I didn't care what they played since the night before had given me so much already. The lights went down and the band came out. Playing "Home" like they did in Phoenix, but still an amazing way to start off a show, a very soft and subtle song with a lot heart. The crowd was so so, there wasn't as many people as I thought would be there. I ran to the front of the middle of the lawn and conquered my spot. I couldn't resist and got just as nuts as I did the night before. I didn't care, "I'm in California" I thought, it's time to get wild. I didn't no anybody else doing anything that could beat would I was doing at that time. The first few songs were sort of main to the setlists, but still rocking, from the rocking "1,000,000" to "March Of The Pigs." It wasn't til "Metal" was played that I realized I was at an amazing show. The crowd didn't seem to respond well to NIN, at least as much as I was. Maybe it's because I actually traveled and wanted to be there and didn't look at the show as just some concert, but more of an Event. I had people come up to me and telling me "Man, you're really into the music..." well, yeah, I thought, isn't that what I'm here for? "Metal" was beautiful and a nice blend into the setlist. It just seemed like the songs kept getting better and better after that. "The Becoming" sent me for the Hills, that was the first song that I ever got into from NIN and the performance was too hot! How could you top that song, oh wait a minute, Trent just did by performing "Burn," which is one of my all time favorite songs. I've completely lost it by this point. "I'm Afraid Of Americans," a song that Reznor produced or remixed for that matter with David Bowie came out of the woodworks and shocked the hell out of me. It seemed like Trent is doing what he wants which makes me so happy. Hearing songs like "Closer" are always nice, but the rare material is where it is at. I literally thought that Bowie might come out for this one, but it was only a dream, sadly it was just the NIN boys, but they still tore the house down with the song. I remember though it wasn't til "La Mer" played that I realized that this show is definitely the show of my life. "La Mer" is such a beautiful song that anybody and I mean anybody can listen to and feel the music. It's rhthym is so heartbound and touches the soul, I feel as if I'm walking down the French Quater of New Orleans on a cool morning sunrise. I had a friend whom I went with to the show in Phoenix, he wanted to hear that song the most and told me if they play that song to call him. So once the piano chords to "La Mer" started playing and I was actually able to calm and get a handle on myself, I dialed him up. Of course it went straight to his voicemail, but I left a message, first telling him I made it to the show and how great it was going, I then told him that he would never believe what song they are playing right now and before I raised my phone, I said "here you go man, it's just for you..." as I raised my phone the song shifts into gear and peaks at that ultimate point when the drums kick in and the song kicks into overdrive. Just a great moment. The rest of the show went on and was absolutely amazing. Playing a lot more favorites, but the fact that I saw these songs performed live along with the songs from the night before gave me and everything and more to be satisfied and will definitely be hard to beat as for shows. I'm an avid Deadhead and have gone to hundreds of shows and have attended quite a few major Festivals around the country and to say that these few shows were the greatest in my life says a lot. Of course NIN closes out with "Hurt" which is really the only way to end a NIN show. Something for them to "Wave Goodbye." I then went to get some water to refresh myself after losing it for 2hrs. I came back for Janes Addiction and while they were alright the night before, in my mind, it's still impossible to follow a band like NIN. The night before we ended up leaving early. Janes Addiction had a good sound, but it wasn't something that could top the energy and power that NIN brought to the table. It seemed like there were more Janes Addiction fans at this show then NIN fans, so of course that was the problem missing from the experience I just had. The crowd got packed tight and I just sat down to rest. The show was the basic setlist of Janes Addiction hits. They sounded good, but I just couldn't believe how much the audience was getting into the music as much as they were, cause they weren't doing that for NIN. The songs reminded me of more of a toned down Rush style. Just a lot of progression and Perry Farrell, although still genious, screaming. Maybe I was just tired from my dancing and partying to NIN, but I just couldn't get into Janes Addiction as much. I stayed for the whole show, mostly cause I drove all that way, but also I needed to come down before I even begin to hit the road and I did. Janes Addiction sobered me up pretty quickly and by the end of the show I was ready to go. The audience though were so into and just vibing off the music that Janes had to offer. I was contemplating on whether to go out to Dana Point that night, or wait til the morning when there is light, but decided to just drive through the night. Which ended up being a big mistake. I ended going three hours out of my way getting lost and caught onto the wrong exits. It was frustrating and almost ruined my time that night. I finally found my way though and got to Dana Point safely and soundly. The next morning I got ready and was not feeling well due to two nights of Extreme Music and NIN. Would this even be worth it now, I mean if Janes Addiction wasn't good enough, how will a little blues be all that great. I was thinking that til I got the beach and found myself in awe and realizing that those feelings were ridiculous. To wake up on a Sunday morning on a beautiful California beach to the sound of the Blues is the best way to end such a great weekend.

NIN/JA was one of the best shows ever!

by Stachedogs on 7/11/09Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre - Chula Vista

This show was my first time getting lawn seats, and I was very pleased. The tickets were only 30 bucks which was a great deal. We certainly got our money worth....ten times over! Street Sweeper Social Club was very very good...didn't know what to expect at first. By the time they finished, the crowd was really into them. NIN I had never seen, but wanted to for a long time. Trent put on a more stripped down show than the earlier leg of tour, but he delivered the goods and lived up to all my expectations. He totally commanded the entire crowd, and it was mesmerizing to see. The stage and light design was simple, but the synchronization to the music was brilliant. Perhaps it was the cookies I ate earlier?? but at some points I thought we were all subjects of a mass-hypnosis experiment! Trent knows how to get in your head. Finally, Janes Addiction took the stage and tore the house down. Having never seen them, I was quite interested. They pulled out all the stops. In contrast to NIN's "stripped down" show, JA bathed the place in colored lights, and had all sorts of cool visuals, including a psychedelic backdrop with larger than life nude women with resemblance to the Joker. The chemistry between band members was electrifying. I never considered myself a Jane's Addiction "fan" before; I liked their music, but after seeing this show I have a new respect for them. At the end of the night, we shook our heads in disbelief and said "What an amazing show!" The bands complimented each other perfectly.

    Jane's Addiction still rocks

by teekaeo on 7/11/09Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre - Chula Vista

Went to the NINJA tour andexpected it to be one hell of a show, I was right. NIN opend up and played tunes off of all their albums including, head like a hole, wish, hurt, burn, and the becoming to say a few. There was a PA problem half way through the show but it didn't last too long. Trent bounced back with some profanity and kicked off terrible lie. I was very anxious to see how Jane's was going to sound like after all these years, and to follow up after Nine Inch Nails they would have to be amazing. Jane's opend up with one of my favorite tunes, three days and they sounded like they had never stopped playing together. Perry sounded great and so the the band, Dave's guitar solos were on the money and I couldn't have asked for more. They played tunes off of all their albums from pigs in zen to been caught steeling, from mountain song to stop. This was one show that I will remember for a long time.

    Excellent

by BigD1 on 7/11/09Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre - Chula Vista

For the Cali dates, NIN opened and Janes closed the show. And Trent and the band were a really tough act to follow. They mixed it up and played songs that spanned their career...including "Burn" (my favorite) from the Natural Born Killers soundtrack. Only negative thing I could say was that the light show was way overpowering. Strobes in moderation can be cool, but this was definitely not moderation and I think half the audience walked away blinded. Aside from that, it was incredible. Janes was awesome too and Perry really did an outstanding job of being the frontman and interacting w/ the crowd. They opened w/ "3 Days" which for me was the highlight of the entire show. I was really stoked to see the complete original lineup (including Eric Avery back on bass) and they didn't miss a beat. Navarro was killing some guitar solos and the whole band was in great form- like they never left. They even played "And She Did" which I don't think I heard them play the last time I saw them at Lalapalooza 07. Overall, one of the best shows I've seen in a really long time!

    Janes & NIN

by rmori on 7/11/09Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre - Chula Vista

Saw them in Chula Vista. NIN was up first and we missed the first song or two even though we were actually at the venue in plenty of time, because they only had one point of entry. The sound for NIN ended up being AMAZING, (after I heard Trent allude to the fact that it sucked on the first song). So NIN killed it. I wish i could say the same for Janes. Janes is my favorite band, I love them so...but their sound SUCKED! It was muffled and we were over to the right and just didn't feel a part of the action at all. I walked towards the center and it sounded a little better but I wasn't "allowed" to stay there. Perry was unfortunately a little behind the beat the entire time and with the exception of Whores and one or two others, they only played their most famous songs. I wanted to hear some more obscure stuff, older stuff or new stuff (or even just different arrangements would have been good). But mostly it was just the sound and our crappy seats that sucked. i still love Janes and will always grab an opportunity to go see them...but never again in an outdoor ampitheatre unless I have front row center seats!

    NIN rocked

by Ruiner on 7/11/09Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre - Chula Vista

Well kiddies! The concert was great. NIN had a fantastic set and Jane's addiction was very entertaining. Perry Ferral is a great front man. My one complaint would be the crowd....totally lame! No one really seemed to be into the concert and the effort that was being put forth by the musicians. If you are going to be indifferent...DONT SHOW UP!

Nine Inch Nails blew the house!

by Arios on 7/11/09Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre - Chula Vista

This was my first time seeing NIN and it was a blast. Just when things were kicking off sound was lost at the beginning of "Terrible Lie", which kind of killed the momentum. They played a good mix of songs such as "The Becoming", "The Fragile", "La Mer." Trent was ever the consistent show man giving his all to the crowd. They played for an hour and a half and I wished they kept on playing. I stayed for three songs from Jane's Addiction and left, not that I dislike JA but I came to see NIN and that's the truth. I feel they are better suited to playing indoors than out. Overall I enjoyed myself and hope to see them again.

    Jane's Addiction tore it up!

by nellsonic on 7/11/09Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre - Chula Vista

Jane's Addiction came with all the power and strength one would have hoped for all these years later. Friends who had been following them since the beginning said that it was perhaps the best show they'd ever seen from them. NIN was very good, but not having a musician dedicated to just providing the keyboard sounds took some of the uniqueness away from their sound. Trent was also a bit hoarse at times, but spot on in others. Friends who had, once again, seen NIN many times said it was the weakest show they had seen from them, and that they usually have been awe-inspiring in the past. Still very good. Yep, very good was the way I would sum of their part of the show. A great double bill for sure. I go to 40+ shows a year, and this was in the top five of 2009 so far.

    NIN/JA show was awesome

by 36JCNeptune on 7/11/09Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre - Chula Vista

Two very different acts: NIN and Jane's Addiction. NIN has some tech problems during Terrible Lie but that's typical for them. They seemed to get off to a bumpy start but after 3-4 songs settled in. Trent Reznor's voice was a little weak, maybe a little strained but still giving full effort. Ended with a great version of Hurt and did I'm Afraid of Americans by David Bowie. Jane's was standard greatness but it could have been 1998. Same songs done very well and Perry Farrell is still one of the great front men of rock.

NIN nailed. Jane not so addicting.

by KingJ on 7/11/09Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre - Chula Vista

First time I've ever seen NIN live and the show was amazing. Trent Reznor, at 44, still delivers the goods. The best song was Head Like A Hole, from his first album. Every single person in the stands was singing - at one point he stopped singing and just let the crowd do their thing. Such intense energy. The hair on the back of my neck stood up. NIN played for about an hour and a half straight with no breaks and then went off. Immediately they began to prepare for Jane's Addiction, which pissed my friend and I off. Since when is NIN opening for a much lesser band? Very dissapointing. We listened for about three songs and realized JA is even less talented now than they were back in their prime (which was, what, 15 years ago?) Without incentive to stay, we left - along with about 1/3 of the audience. I was surprised more didn't leave. (Nothing personal against JA, they just aren't really my cup of tea. In fact I don't even like tea.) I've since heard that this is the last tour that Reznor is going to do. Then again, how many people say "This is it. The End." and then come back later? It would be such a shame if NIN doesn't come back. The group is too talented and the fans are too rabid. I'm already waiting to buy my tickets for the next concert! Hope to see you all there!
