About

Since 1959, the Newport Folk Festival® has held a unique place in America's musical and cultural history. A hub for the Civil Rights Movement in the 60s and the site of Bob Dylan's famous switch to electric guitar in 1965, the festival also hosted the first major appearances of Joan Baez, James Taylor, Joni Michell and Arlo Guthrie, and sparked the revival of gospel, Cajun and blues. Today the festival still serves the musical omnivores, the fans who crave innovation but appreciate tradition. The event is held annually at Fort Adams State Park in Newport, RI and is a production of Newport Festivals Foundation, Inc.

The festival was very, very enjoyable. The music was really good & I found out new bands that I like. Everything was great: music, artists, food, and atmosphere.

A music festival for people who really love music

by John54321 on 8/2/10Fort Adams State Park - Newport

There's not much to dislike about this festival. A truly incredible line-up, spectacular ocean views, great vendors and easy access to all the different performances. Sometimes people don't respect the no high-backed chair rules, but you can usually find a better spot elsewhere. Also, the beer tent is a operational disaster... 40 minutes to get a beer... but at least it's right by the water. We had incredible weather but if it rained I don't think this would be nearly as much fun.

    Steve Martin at his best.

by JustCallMeJayHawk on 8/1/10The International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino - Newport

A great venue and a great way to start the 51st year of the Newport Folk Festival. Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers played together like they had always played together. It was a relaxing and enjoyable show. Sarah Jarosz warmed the audience up and as the sun went down Tim O'Brien got us in the mood for the excellent banjo and flawless bluegrass that was Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers.

Can't wait to go again next year!

by MommaEmma on 8/1/10Fort Adams State Park - Newport

The 2010 Newport Folk Festival was a perfect mix of music, crafts, food, and sights. The main stage is the best place to see and hear music but the Quad stage is nice too. The Harbor stage was crowded and uncomfortable. If you could see, you couldn't hear and if you could hear, you probably couldn't see. Having to switch from stage to stage is kind of a bummer. I would much rather get a space in front of one stage and stay there rather than move from place to place to see the performers I liked. I can't wait to go again next year!!

    WOW.

by felixfan on 8/1/10Fort Adams State Park - Newport

I stumbled upon this festival on a whim, but it was truly amazing. Andrew Bird is extremely talented, and Brandi Carlile really carried the crowd. I make a point of going every summer from now on.

perfect weather-sunny with a great breeze. Andrew Bird was awesome. ODeath had tons of energy and was so creative. The Low Anthem did not disappoint. So much to hear and see. Needed to be in two places at once!

An experience you need to have!

by igottouchedbyahorsefeathe on 8/1/10Fort Adams State Park - Newport

The perfect festival for anyone of any age to attend. Walking around you will see anywhere from small children to elderly folk fans. There were so many good venders selling all kinds of arts and crafts. one of a kind items really worth buying. the bands were incredible and they did a great job not putting similar bands playing at the same time, so if you were more into the indie folk bands then you got to see all of them, for instance O'death was followed by Horse Feathers on the same stage (which were both amazing). The atmosphere was excellent, and the people were all friendly. it wasn't your average festival with nothing but rolling/tripping hippies. I recommend the Newport Folk Festival to anyone, as i plan to go back next year. I hate tourist like places and i can't stand being there. This certainly wasn't one of those.

    what what cheer/

by Anonymous on 8/1/10Fort Adams State Park - Newport

What Cheer? stole the show, in my book. Part New Orleans, part klezmer, part street theater -- all passion!

    Unbelievable

by Anonymous on 8/1/10Fort Adams State Park - Newport

This was the greatest concert experience I have ever had. If you are a fan of folk, or even just a fan of music you need to attend this festival. It is 100% avid music fans. There are no girls walking around with no clothes on, dancing all over their boyfriend and making a scene. There's no one falling over drunk, no overwhelming stench of marijuana. Just a bunch of fun people at a festival to enjoy the music. The lineup was great, the food was great, the people were great, the service was great, Newport is great. It was just awesome. Do not miss this festival for anything. If you do anything next summer it better be attending the Newport Folk Festival.

Brandi Carlile, the twins, rest of band = awesome

by Tigertam on 8/1/10Fort Adams State Park - Newport

Great show Brandi, twins, and supporting band members. Great welcoming band (the Big Cheer group) as you enter the gates. Low Athem also put on a great show. Would like to see stronger line up in artists on main stage as in years past. Please design better folk fees. Sorry, but the folk fest fees this year were boring, drab, and did not have the year of event on them. Recc using better/lighter quality of cotton for the tees too (for summer wear, it's hot out there :-), making the cut more unisex. Use Brighter colors in cotton tees w bright creative design for event. What a better way to future advertise this traditional, fun, and uplifting event with some color and creativity in the folk tees ;-) Need to create more space for Harbour and Quad stages if possible. Couldn't get into them w out violating fire lanes :-) Great vendors. Overall, a beautiful and fun day. Brought someone who's never been here before, and she loved it, exceeding her expectations of the event.

Sign me up for next year!

by Anonymous on 8/1/10Fort Adams State Park - Newport

This was my first year at Newport Folk Festival, and honestly, my primary reason for going was to see two of my favorite artists, Blitzen Trapper and Andrew Bird. What I didn't realize I would find is a beautiful location right on the harbor, fair weather, and an intimate venue where I could get closer to the bands than was ever possible at a concert hall. The festival setting is wonderful because it is a collective experience, and I loved being able to see live music with so many other like-minded people. Blitzen Trapper was, as I expected, flawless and fantastic live, with energy and excitement in their performance. Andrew Bird was as well, and I felt absolutely captivated by his solo performance and then his collaboration with Calexico. I also saw Horse Feathers, which was lovely and intimate, and John Prine, who had people dancing on the lawn towards the end of the festival. The only downside was probably the high admission cost and the fact that there were three different stages, so it was hard to see everyone I wanted, but overall I thoroughly enjoyed the day and would love to come back next year.

OPENING ACTS 2010 NEWPORT FOLK FESTIVAL

by THREEM on 7/31/10The International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino - Newport

I WAS EXPECTING A GOOD TIME, HOPING FOR A GREAT TIME, BUT NOT PREPARED FOR THE TIME OF MY LIFE. LAST NIGHTS LINEUP PROVIDED ME AND MY COMPANIONS WITH JUST THAT. LIKE A KID AT CHRISTMAS THE BEST GIFTS ARE THE ONES THAT ARE A SURPRISE. THAT EXTRA LAYER OF FROSTING ON AN ALREADY TASTY SLICE OF YOUR FAVORITE CAKE. WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER? THE WEATHER WAS GREAT, VENUE TERRIFIC,AND THE PERFORMERS WERE DIVERSE TO SAY THE LEAST. MISS SARAH JAROSZ GAVE A GLIMPSE INTO THE FUTURE.TIM OBRIEN PLAYED AND SANG LIKE THE VETERAN PERFORMER HE IS. HIS TRIBUTE TO HIS DAD WAS DONE IN A WAY THAT MADE YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE AND ALMOST LIKE YOU KNEW THE MAN NOT LIKE YOU WERE INTRUDING ON A PRIVATE FAMILY MOMENT. STEVE MARTIN AND THE STEEP CANYON RANGERS WERE FABULOUS. TROUBLE IN THE WORLD? WHAT TROUBLE? FOR OVER AN HOUR AND A HALF THEY LET YOU TAKE A BREAK FROM ALL OF THAT. i DO NOT ENVY NEXT YEARS OPENING ACT.
