New York Rangers History

The Rangers, one of the Original Six NHL teams, were founded in 1926 by Tex Rickard. According to legend, the New York media nicknamed the team “Tex's Rangers,” a play on the famed law enforcers Texas Rangers.

The team has won four Stanley Cup Championships, the first of which came in only their second season (1928) and the most recent in 1994, beating Vancouver in Game 7 to break a 54-year drought and send Cup-starved fans into a frenzy. The Rangers have also taken home four Presidents’ Trophies and won eight divisional championships—most recently winning both for the 2023-2024 season.

The Rangers' 2017-2018 campaign broke a string of seven consecutive seasons in which the team reached the Playoffs—including the 2013-2014 campaign, which ended in a five-game series loss to the Los Angeles Kings in the Stanley Cup Final.

Among the Hall of Famers to don the Rangers sweater are Andy Bathgate, Eric Lindros, Phil Esposito, and Wayne Gretzky. Twelve players have had their number retired by the team: Bathgate, Ed Giacomin, Rod Gilbert, Adam Graves, Harry Howell, Brian Leetch, Mark Messier, Jean Ratelle, Mike Richter, Vic Hadfield, Henrik Lundqvist and Wayne Gretzky. Herb Brooks (1937-2003), who coached the Rangers from 1981-1985, also coached the U.S. Olympic hockey team to its "Miracle on Ice" victory over the Soviet Union and on to a gold medal in the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, N.Y.

The game really didn't start until the third period. The defense stepped up by the damage was already done. There isn't a bad seat at MSG and the fans were alot of fun to be around. The consession stands were good and there were hardly any lines.

  • Will never visit arena again

We went to watch the hockey game. First was the lighting there is terrible. Everything there is way too dark. Second we had limited view seating. I had no idea that meant we couldn't see a third of the ice. These seats should never be sold for anything. Besides that the price for these are priced much higher then others. I understand the pricing because it is NY but to pay that kind of money and not be able to see. I would expect better out of the people who claim to have the best arena around especially when this is the only reason we came to NY to begin with.

I have not been to hockey game in 25 years. Islander fan at that time. My niece came in from England and we both had a fantastic time. The game was great with the Rangers winning and I even got to see a few boxing matches. I was also able to get introduced to your players and remember the lookback to our last Stanley Cup. Thank you for a most enjoyable sporting event. My niece really enjoyed it too. She had her first Knish and cheered the Rangers on. She is now an official new yorker. Happy thanksgiving Peter

The game was good but the Rangers lost. The weather was nice and so was the walk that my Girlfriend and I took through Rockefeller Center & Times Square.

I am a big Rangers fan, but spending over $300 to attend this event was a mistake. The Rangers played uninspired hockey for the first two periods of the game. Joe DiMaggio once said he gave it his all every game he played because there might be a fan in the stands seeing him play for the first time. It is obvious to me that there are no Joe DiMaggios on the Rangers.

The game was at a very slow pace. I felt bored at times.

Exciting match, great arena with good atmosphere. Our first trip to Madison Square Garden - a shame that the Rangers couldn't quite pull out a victory.

Rangers were not up to par last night, but still love them and enjoy every game.

  • Lousy Ushers

by floydd on 11/7/09Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 2 out of 5

Great game but when you are paying over $200 a seat do you think the ushers could send bums that did not pay a fraction of what you did back to their real seat. First they were in our seats then they asked everyone to move around to accomodate them, stole stuff and at no time did anyone check their tickets even when it was obvious....it makes you feel like a chump for spending so much.
