Over 15 years as a Backstreet Boys fan and 8 months of planning, waiting, and hoping for this concert finally came to fruition on July 1st, 2011. I bought the tickets back in November of 2010 through the fanclub and waited over half a year for what I hoped would be the concert of the year, I was wrong. It was, as the tagline stated, the concert of a lifetime! For 2 and a half hours, those 9 boyband superstars rocked the roof off of the Staples Center to well over 10,000 fans...me included. The lights went low and the music started to play, and suddenly I was transported back 15 years to my first Backstreet Boys concert in Jr. High. My heart started beating with the fervor of the 12 year old girl that fell in love with them the first time I heard their five part harmony take over on a Canadian TV show. New Kids were a bit before my time, but they put on a good show nonetheless. It was a veritable buffet of BSB and NKOTB medleys, hit singles, polished dance moves, and sexy costumes. Confetti and pyrotechnics shot out from all over! AJ and Howie came down our side of the stadium while singing "Shape of My Heart". But the icing on the cake, just when I thought I couldn't take anymore heart pumping boyband goodness, and felt like I might faint and any minute, I was in for the shock of a lifetime. My Boys started singing "I Want It That Way" and it was just like old times, just like all the other concerts I had been to since Millennium...it was damn near one of the most perfect nights of my life. And then it got even better. Although everyone there was having a great time singing along, for us Backstreet fans, something was still amiss, the absence of a certain dark haired crooner who had left the band shortly after Never Gone...only to reappear briefly during the encore "Shape of My Heart" at the Palladium for the Unbreakable Tour. Mid-song, the Boys stopped singing, a spotlight shone at the end of the stage...my heart skipped a beat! Could it be? Indeed! For here came, the one and only, Kevin Scott Richardson jaunting up onto the stage, microphone in hand, wearing a grey suit. An estimated 19,500 people filled the stadium with uproarious screams of joy as Kevin sang his original solo. It was INCREDIBLE! Honestly, if that entire place had crumbled to the ground afterwards, I could have died happy. He even joined the other 9 guys on stage for the finale NKOTBSB mashup and "We Will Rock You!" It was amazing! One of my other favorite parts was when I guys ventured into the audience to find a young woman to sing to during "I'll Never Break Your Heart". Wouldn't you know it, that crazy boy A.J. coerced a guy to come up on the stage to be his "girl". The whole place started laughing as A.J. handed the guy a rose and sang to him on bended knee while he sat on a stool. The best part happened when my favorite guy, notorious jokester Brian swooped in without missing a beat and essentially stole AJ's guy from him just as he would have done if AJ had brought a girl up. The guy started shaking his foot rapidly almost like a Bambi-esque Thumper the Rabbit move and I was laughing so hard I was nearly in tears. It was so funny! This is why I love these guys, it's the whole package. Talent, humor, and not to mention still ruggedly good looks after all these years. In fact better, because they're not lanky awkward teens anymore, they're all buffed, toned, velvet voiced men. So after all the waiting and anticipating, I finally got to witness the concert I'll be telling my grandkids about 20 some years from now! LOL. Backstreet Boys, you still manage to melt my heart after all these years. I love you. Looking forward to the next amazing chapter in the book of Backstreet!
