NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL IN CONCERT:

Indie rock legends Neutral Milk Hotel triggered a collective jaw-drop with the April 2013 announcement of a reunion tour in late 2013/early 2014. In the 15-year gap since their last shows, lore surrounding the band has reached near-mythic proportions, earning them an ever-growing cult following and making the possibility of a reunion tour an indie rock fantasy. Only a truly impressive return to the stage could have met the soaring expectations, and that's exactly what the band has delivered on tour, performing the entirety of their two seminal studio albums to throngs of awestruck fans around the globe.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Athens, Georgia-based Neutral Milk Hotel began in the early '90s as the solo project of singer-songwriter Jeff Magnum, previously of Olivia Tremor Control. Following a few singles and an EP, Magnum made his full-length debut with 1996's On Avery Island, putting together a band for a tour supporting the album. The lineup would stick, resulting in the now-legendary group of musicians on 1998's In The Aeroplane Over the Sea, a modern classic of indie rock. The success of the album and the stresses of life on the road ultimately took its toll on Magnum, leading to the band's indefinite hiatus at the end of that year. While Magnum has performed solo since then, the band's 2013/14 reunion tour marked their first live shows together in 15 years.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"NMH lived up to the incredibly high expectations. They played all my favorite songs and encouraged the audience to participate. Jeff Mangum was both energetic and clearly humbled to play before a sold out house."

"I never thought I would see this group play together, so to hear the songs so expertly played was a really powerful experience. NMH are all about the MUSIC, not egos or fame or marketing, which makes a huge difference for music lovers like me. Their musicianship shines!"

"This concert was fantastic. After waiting many years to see this band, they live up to every expectation. The crowd was very enthusiastic and the band responded in kind."

    A Transformative Experience

    by Bobby1234567890 on 1/21/14Orpheum Theatre - Boston

This show was absolutely amazing. I was cautiously optimistic when I heard NMH was re-forming to do a tour, and this show exceeded every expectation I had. Having seen Jeff Mangum on his solo tour rather recently, I wasn't sure if I "needed" to see NMH, but I'm so glad I bought a ticket. NMH hold a very dear place in my heart. I'm not a super-fan, though I truly love Avery Island and Aeroplane and hearing songs from these albums was a real treat. Moreover, I have always admired Mangum for being honest with us fans about his need to shed the limelight for a while in order to take care of some personal business. I think that time allowed him to retain the performance intensity that these songs require and that intensity was on display at this show. So, a huge thanks to Jeff and the band for bringing to life their music with all of the honesty and beauty I was hoping for. If you have even a passing interest in their music, I would recommend seeing them live.

    Unreal

NMH were amazing. Jeff's voice is still as powerful as ever. A near religious experience.

I had only the most removed, abstract idea what this show would be like. Years of listening to their records and accepting them as a long lost, sorely overlooked treasure of underground music made it unreal for me to conceive of seeing them live. I purchased the tickets, came to the orpheum and took my seat thinking I was prepared to see Neutral Milk Hotel. Completely mistaken was I. As Jeff Mangum walked up on stage, I felt the tight fist of trouble clench in my chest and the moment he struck the opening cords of "King of Carrot Flowers, Pt. 2" I broke open into a sobbing, sniveling mess. I wept and heaved openly for the first five or six songs, a complete emotional wreck. Never have I been so emotionally blindsided. Neutral Milk Hotels performance was the most cathartic experience I've had at any music venue. I still find my reaction to it surprising and inexplicable. Sublime. It was purely sublime.

    Neutral Milk Hotel was incredible!

by phriendlyphan on 1/19/14Orpheum Theatre - Boston

I loved seeing Neutral Milk Hotel. The variety of instruments and the intensity of the performance was really outstanding. The Bassist was crazy! He played everything from the saw(yes the saw) to a banjo with a bow and he was intense on the bass guitar. The mixture of horns, acoustic and electric instruments and the drums really blew me away. I would certainly recommend them to anybody who loves music.

Neutral Milk Hotel--11 out of a possible 10

by AsleepattheDead on 1/19/14Orpheum Theatre - Boston

Electric! Eccentric! Hypnotic! I would dare to call it Genius. Heretofore unimagined instrumentation, vocals of supernatural power, soaring melodies, Tolkienesque cavorting onstage. I hope Jeff can find deliverance in his music; he should know that we do.

This was by far the best concert I've been to in my entire life! The concert was very well organized, took only a minter to enter and get to our seats.

    Brilliant.

by JeffGB on 10/28/13The Tabernacle - Atlanta

The show was flawless. But I did want to thank Jeff Magnum for starting the show by asking everyone to put their phones away. And they did! ALL of them! For the entire show! It has been a decade since I have been to a rock and roll show where I didn't have to watch the show through my neighbors iPhone and listen to several competing conversations from all around me. I hope all the people that went to that show will remember the experience of paying attention and LISTENING to an entire show and that they will try it again!

Eclectic indie band pioneers reunite after 15 yea

by LapisLee on 10/22/13The National - Richmond

Neutral Milk Hotel is the best indie band that you've never heard of because they have played together in 15 years, but their sound is eclectic, magical and melancholy with occasional bursts of psychotic joyfulness.

Neutral Milk Hotel was inconcievably gratifying.

by LydiaChlamydia on 10/17/13Madison Theater - Covington

Neutral Milk Hotel recently began their 15 tour reunion, I so luckily was able to attend. The moment Jeff Mangnum and Julian Koster walked on stage, it was as if a wace of ecstasy washed through and over me. I never, in my life though i'd be able to see Neutral Milk Hotel live. The concert venue in itself was fantastic, not too big so no matter where you stood, you'd still be able to get a really amazing view of the members onstage. The three tiered setup was marvelous, although i stood at the third tier, I was still able to get an amazing view of my favorite band. Overall, it was one of my best nights and i do hope to see them play again in the distant future, for now, i'm getting rather hyped to return to Madison Theatre to see Animal Collective this winter.

    Great Stuff

by ElliotV on 10/17/13Madison Theater - Covington

The show was great. Neutral Milk got up there laid down what they got. Sounded just like the records, but oh so much better. It was very cool to see how they produced a lot of the unique sounds they can create. The only reason I gave this show 4 stars was due to the venue. Madison is a dump. Never liked going there. The ceiling would drip water on me every few minutes or so. Bathrooms are in a bad spot. Fortunately they at least have a good venue for the sound, so everything sounded great.

    Neutral Milk Hotel

by Anonymous on 10/15/13The National - Richmond

The show was sold-out, so the place was packed. There was a good mix of songs I knew and songs I didn't know. The crowd was signing along. Great for die-hard fans. Made me want to go home and listen to In The Aeroplane Over the Sea. They sounded awesome. Well worth it!

by ELDRL on 10/15/13The National - Richmond

A sold out show where noone in the audience was too busy on their phones, taking pictures or talking to friends. What a great night with incredible music and a courteous attentive crowd. NMH did not disappoint.
