About

Finding the box in which to place singer-songwriter Neko Case has proven perplexing for the Grammy Awards poobahs, and just about everyone else. She released her acclaimed seventh solo album in 2013 -- titled The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You -- and promptly earned a Grammy Award nomination in the Best Alternative Music Album category. Her preceding set, 2009's Middle Cyclone, earned the Alexandria, Va., native a nomination in the Best Contemporary Folk Album category. With her tendency to write folk-based songs with a bit of a loping beat, she's often refereed to as an Americana or alt-country artist, but her sound fits just as comfortably in the indie-rock singer-songwriter category. Further complicating matters is Case's longtime status as a member of Canadian indie supergroup The New Pornographers, with whom she's been known to belt out power-pop tunes.

Whatever you call her style, Case is a hit with fans and critics alike thanks to her poignant songwriting and her distinctive, smoky voice, which shines in concert. It's a combination that has fans flocking to buy tickets to see her on tour, where she's put the focus on the music while eschewing trappings like costume changes and fancy set designs.

    Neko Case is amazing!

by oregon on 7/15/09McMenamins Crystal Ballroom - Portland

I love Neko Case. Her voice is fabulous. The Crystal Ballroom can sometimes be too loud to actually enjoy a show but they had the sound just right for this one.

    Neko is neat-o.

by FernyFiddlehead on 7/15/09McMenamins Crystal Ballroom - Portland

This Neko Case show was my first of the lovely lady's, and I was not disappointed. She sounded great, as did the band. One of my favorite things about this show was the variety. Obviously it was all Neko magic, but she visited some older songs.

    Neko Rocked that stage!

by kdominguez on 7/15/09The Warfield - San Francisco

Her voice was even better than her records, I couldn't believe it. She gave an amazing performance. I highly recommend her show.

    Personality goes a long way

by BobbyMO on 7/15/09The Warfield - San Francisco

Let me start with a small caveat. I think Neko Case has one of the best voices in music today, and her songwriting (mostly on "Fox Confessor") is amazing. Her show, on the other hand, was a huge let down. She acted like a true prima donna, when she repeatedly told the sound person to turn up the vocals. This wouldn't have been such a problem, but she made such a big deal about it. I mean, you ever hear of a sound check Neko? She went on to belittle her bandmates, in subtle ways of course. They seemed to take it in stride, but this created an awkwardness on stage that was unlike any show that I've ever seen. Again, I can't take issue with the songs and they way that they were performed, but simply put, her personality and stage presence are an irritation.

    Neko is perfect!

by disappointer on 7/15/09McMenamins Crystal Ballroom - Portland

Jason Lytle played a solid opening set, pulling from both his solo work and his extensive Grandaddy catalog, playing familiar tunes with new twists. He seemed reserved as ever but his music was as expressive as always. Then Neko Case took the stage; the Crystal Ballroom was as packed as I have ever seen it, and in a word, her set was flawless. The crowd and the musicians were all clearly enjoying the set, and indeed the perfection of the music was the only complaint I had. I like my live shows to stray from the recorded works more than Neko's show did that night, but it was still a fantastic show so I can't complain too much. Also, I was finally able to find Middle Cyclone on vinyl at the show.

    Gotta Love Neko!

by carzylla on 7/15/09McMenamins Crystal Ballroom - Portland

Neko Case is one of those amazing artists that actually sounds as good live as she does on album. She was in fine form that night. The set list was a nice mix of new and old, focussing mainly on Middle Cyclone and Fox Confessor Brings The Flood with some charming banter thrown in between songs. If you've never seen Neko live, you're missing out.

    Amazing Voice

by Chach87 on 7/14/09The Warfield - San Francisco

We were first introduced to Neko Case through the New Pornographers...she stood out from the rest. Her voice is amazing and her lyrics thought provoking! After hearing her at Bimbos in San Francisco, we were hooked and started buying her music. Second time we saw her was at the Warfield in S.F. here recently. While we really appreciated seeing her again, we didn't feel the venue allowed her to amplify and carry out her best quality, her voice. Or would that be the mistake of the Sound People? I don't know, but I was only bummed because I wanted her to be louder, and to fill my being with her voice the way she had at Bimbos.

    Neko Case is amazing!

by Evelynmichelle on 7/14/09The Warfield - San Francisco

Im a huge fan of Neko Case, so its always a treat to get to see her live. Her band was amazing and the venue was nice. I was hoping to hear a wide variety of songs from different albums, but she mainly stuck to her new album. All in all the concert was a great experience.

    great show

by mamwa on 7/14/09Ogden Theatre - Denver

Neko Case is an exceptional talent with a voice that seems to get stronger with time. Backed by a strong supporting cast and great harmonies from backing vocals, the Neko show on May 30 was as strong as late spring showers. Her lyrical talents paint some great visuals which were enhanced by screen images displayed behind the band during the evening. It was a great show leaving the crowd looking forward to her next visit.

    Great music, Horrible onstage banter

by Fanster on 7/14/09Greek Theatre - Los Angeles

Neko arrived with a large band that sounded incredible on nearly every tune. Unfortunately, there were long pauses between each song - during which the band slid inside jokes back and forth onstage in near mumbles. Only the most polite fans up front seemed to laugh during these interludes. By the halfway point, the energy level of the show was really low. Play more, talk less. It's a good rule to live by.

    Loved the show...

by rde56 on 7/14/09McMenamins Crystal Ballroom - Portland

I have seen Neko a few times now. Besides her amazing lyrics and voice... I love her live. For this show, she was relaxed and fun. She and the band seemed on and it was clear they were enjoying themselves. Loved the 'extended' encore.

Neko Case, or as I like to call her, the real deal

by crazysal on 7/14/09The Warfield - San Francisco

I saw Neko Case at the Warfield in SF a few weeks ago. I had been listening to her for a while now, and had seen her speak about the music industry and sing a few tunes at Herbst Theatre, part of the singer/song writer series months before. Hearing only a few songs that night at Herbst Theatre she had proven to me that she was, as I had suspected, the real deal. Her live vocals exceeded my expectations and I was so excited to see her at the Warfeild for a full show. I took my boyfriend, even though I'm the Neko Case fan. I wanted to share with him this beautiful music that I treasure and love so much. With both really enjoyed the show. I got high off of her perfect pitch and no make-up, no frills style and attitude. Her and her back up singer Kelly talk back and forth to one another craking jokes in a casual style. Almost like a schitck from the Prarie Home Companion radio show, these gals had the crowd roaring with laughter. Neko's stance on the music industry ( she'll never "sell out") life experience, and raw talent made for one of the best live performances I've ever seen.

    Neko's voice blows me away

by JulesK on 7/14/09McMenamins Crystal Ballroom - Portland

Another awesome show by Neko. When she belts one out, there's no one comparable. She rocks! Wish her backup singer wouldn't have over-bantered her all the time though. Hint to her - we're there to hear NEKO, not you!

    Surprised

by LeftCoastBrit on 7/14/09The Warfield - San Francisco

I bought the ticket on a whim, having heard only one song, once. Then i was bummed that it clashed with Brandi Carlile, whom I love and would have chosen. But I was pleasantly surprised; in fact i described Neko to a friend as a cross between Brandi and Martha Wainwright (whom I also love, and have seen a couple of times). I even bought Neko's latest CD at the show and would see her again. Only negative: who was that (too) chatty woman playing the music box? Didn't seem to serve any purpose.

    Neko Case

by IamRothman on 7/14/09McMenamins Crystal Ballroom - Portland

Neko case was great, I had seen her with the new pornographers and after her fantastic new album dropped (middle cyclone), I knew I had to see her at a more intimate venue. I road tripped with some freinds and relavties and saw a great show. Jason Lytle of grandaddy opened, which was awesome. Neko came out and went right into maybe sparrow, and the whole show just snowballed with greatness after that.cher band was great, I beleive there was 17 guitars on stage at one point, ranging from lap steel to upright bass, to banjo to a sweet 60's tele. five star performance. I can't wait to see her again, and get the middle cyclone !

    Neko at the Crystal Ballroom

by MrSmith on 7/14/09McMenamins Crystal Ballroom - Portland

I don't see many shows, but I'll drive 500 miles to see Neko. The show was top notch--the band was flawless and Neko's voice was heart-wrenching perfection. I get the feeling she really wears her heart on her sleeve with this latest album, Middle Cyclone, and her performance was a testament to that passion. Can't wait for the next album, and I only hope for even more of the animalistic/instinctive/Darwinian theme. In any case, I'm sure it will be my new favorite.

    Neko rocks!

by Brodina on 7/14/09Greek Theatre - Los Angeles

After listening to Neko for years on CD I wasn't sure what to expect when I saw her live; some artists need the studio to fill out their sound. However, Neko's golden voice was even smoother and more powerful live. She put on a great set, mixing her newer tracks with her older stuff, and she played until the Greek made us all leave. She was also quite personable, cracking jokes with her back-up singers and talking to the crowd. Neko rocks! Jason Lytle was also a treat. I had never heard him before but I enjoyed his set.

Neko at her best? Not exactly.....

by Diglicious on 7/14/09The Warfield - San Francisco

Neko herself set the tone for this performance when she came out and immediately announced her intention to do the same exact show that she had performed at the same venue on the previous night. While she was likely joking, it sent the message that she really didn't think that there was anything special about the audience who had apparently made a mistake by attending the second night. Unfortunately, there was this sort of relaxed and condescending banter throughout the show as Neko and her background singer totally killed the pace of the show by talking entirely too much. I was tempted several times to yell out "please quit talking and SING!!!" At one point she even said some negative things about the Beatles, for God's sake, which seems to be a absolutely stupid thing to do given their status and popularity and almost inarguable greatness. I was utterly turned off by these comments and found them unnecessary and inappropriate. Not only that, but the poor pacing also seemed to inspire lackluster musical performances at best by her and her band. Neko needs to learn a lot about presentation and professionalism if this show is any indication. I've seen her a couple of other times, and her shows tend to be relaxed, but this was just excessive. I doubt that I will go out of my way to see another such show.
