About

Born in Te Awamutu, New Zealand in 1958, singer and songwriter Neil Finn is most associated with being a member of the band Spit Enz and as the founder and frontman of Crowded House. With numerous hits over the course of his career, Finn is one of the most successful musicians to have hailed from New Zealand.

Neil Finn learnt to play the piano at a fairly young age and, inspired by the likes of Neil Young and David Bowie, his interest in music grew substantially in the early ‘70s. Neil's elder brother Tim was one of the chief members of Split Enz, who were popular in Australia at the time, and in 1977 he asked Neil to join the band. The younger Finn brother soon became an important member of the group and wrote their biggest-selling hit “I Got You,” which broke Split Enz internationally.

After Split Enz broke up in 1985, Neil Finn went on to form Crowded House. With Finn as the main creative force, Crowded House enjoyed huge international success with hits such as “Don't Dream It's Over,” “Weather with You” and “Fall at Your Feet.” In 1996, the album Recurring Dream: The Very Best of Crowded House, topped the UK album charts. In that same year, Finn decided to dissolve the band in order to concentrate on a solo career. Crowded House would eventually reform in 2006 and embarked on lengthy world tours in both 2007 and 2010 to promote new albums.

In addition to two albums recorded with his brother Tim under the name The Finn Brothers, Neil Finn has enjoyed much success as a solo artist with albums such as Try Whistling This and One Nil. The live releases The Sun Came Out and 7 Worlds Collide featured guest appearances from a number of artists, including the likes of Johnny Marr of The Smiths and Philip Selway from Radiohead. In 1998, Finn recorded a cover of the song “I Can See Clearly Now” for the hit animated film Antz. In 2012, Neil Finn contributed to the soundtrack of the smash hit film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, writing and performing the track “Song of the Lonely Mountain,” which played over the film's closing credits.

the other best songwriter named Neil

by Hecker on 4/6/14Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

Not enough people know about the genius of Neil Finn. He's got the songwriting acumen of Neil Young, and the Beatles, a sense of melody and harmony like no other, has a killer voice, is a great guitar and piano player, and is one of my top 5 performers to see live…the guy has it all as well as a great sense of humor. He can be mellow and sensitive or raw and rocking'. Do yourself a favor and go see him anytime you have the chance! Buy these 2 live DVDs Crowded House's "Farewell To The World" and his solo "7Worlds Collide"…you will be amazed ! P.S. forgot to mention the amazing light show and 3D ever changing, swirling psychedelic back drop that was visually jaw dropping!

    Neil Finn Astounds

by moonlj on 4/6/14Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

I admit to being a total freak about this man and his music. He and his band did a terrific job and sounded great. I talk about him to anyone who will (or won't) listen. His songwriting is beyond compare.

    Not To Be Missed

by Havelin on 4/6/14Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

Neil Finn never disappoints, which is why I'm going to the UK to see him 4 more times! He connected with his audience, told stories and yelled at security guards! Yay! He said their safety rule about the audience not dancing in the orchestra pit was "bullshit" because of the actual orchestra usually being in there with their instruments. I love this man!

    Far surpassed my expectations

by Marco1961 on 4/5/14Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

I've been a casual fan of Neil Finn for years, but now I am a major fan. This show was excellent, spanning his career with Split Enz, Crowded House and his solo work. Neil was energetic, in top form, and very funny. He played for around 2-1/2 hours!

    The Church of Neil Finn

by Bumpercrop on 4/5/14Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

I have seen Neil several times and he always gives a heartfelt performance. I don't think the has ever just cruised through a show. The Orpheum was a wonderful and worthy venue to see him perform because both are class acts. Fitting.

    Neil Finn never disappoints

by SGPete on 4/5/14Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

This show was in support of a new solo album, but he included a genuine overview of his remarkable catalog, Split Enz, Crowded House, past solo work, Pajama Club. His voice has never sounded better, and he continues to be a brilliant songwriter and charismatic performer.

The Neil Finn show at the Orpheum Theatre was most excellent! It started with a bang, seemed to get a little mellow, but they finished it off in Neil Finn/Crowded House fashion: rocking it! Awesome venu, awsome show!

    Neil Finn is amazing live

by dizzyheights on 4/5/14Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

Neil Finn is a master songwriter at the top of his game. He has assembled a fantastic band for this tour. He played songs from Split Enz, Crowded House, and his three solo albums. They sounded fantastic. The new songs (from his Dizzy Heights album) really come alive when played live and they fit very well into his large catalog of songs. The energy when Neil plays is always electric. Can't wait to see him play again.

    Neil does it again!

by Corco on 4/5/14Palace of Fine Arts - San Francisco

Neil was in fine voice and memorable banter Thursday night. He played lots of songs from the new album, which hearing live, made me appreciate the new Dizzy heights record all the more. Of course he played many expected songs, Crowded House hits, a couple Split Enz tunes as well. Would have loved a couple from Finn brothers "Everyone Is Here", maybe next time.

    Amazing.

by MissRobot on 4/4/14Palace of Fine Arts - San Francisco

I have seen Neil Finn several times over the last 30 years, and I think this was one of his best shows. He was on point, charming, and his voice sounded fantastic. He played a few Split Enz songs, a few Crowded House, and even "Only Talking Sense" that he did with Tim. There isn't enough praise I can give this man. Superb talent.

    Astonishing Neil Finn

by SeeGG on 4/4/14Palace of Fine Arts - San Francisco

Neil Finn has been my favorite musician for years. I love his entire catalogue of songs, and frequently go back to listen to his early work. However, he never stands still or rests on his laurels. He continues to evolve as an artist and remains firmly ensconced in a position of relevance and influence in the music world. He is unafraid of new sounds and technology. He's able to assimilate technology and trends into new songs that are uniquely his. Moreover, he continues to restlessly innovate and write great songs. He is a gifted lyricist and a virtuosic musician. His onstage presence is affable and humorous. Artists like Neil Finn come along only once in an eon. I look forward to listening to his brilliant music and seeing his performances and for many years to come.

    Excellent Niel Finn concert

by RHG55 on 4/4/14Palace of Fine Arts - San Francisco

This is the second time that I attend a Neil Finn concert in San Francisco. The first time, he was playing as part of Crowded House. This second time was much better in all respects. The venue was excellent, that band was tightly integrated and the music selection was phenomenal. I was very impressed by how much is Neil an excellent performer as he is a composer. He is a great guitar and piano player and has a great voice. You can tell that he is having a great time performing. In some respects, he reminds me of Paul McCartney on how he connects with the audience through his performance. Neil is a very accomplished rock composer and, sadly, he is totally underrated in the US. His compositions are highly melodic and instantly enjoyable, even if you listen to them for the first time. I strongly recommend that you check him out.
