About

Moon Mirror, Nada Surf's new record, has everything fans love and expect from them. Bittersweet anthems that begin quietly but explode into soaring harmonies? Check. Songs that are play-on-repeat heart punches? Check. Songs that are poetic and thought-provoking while also being absolute belt-at-the-top-of-your-voice-with-the-windows-down masterpieces? Check. It's all here.

For the past 30 years, Nada Surf has had the same core lineup: Matthew Caws, Daniel Lorca, and Ira Elliot. Moon Mirror, their first for New West Records, was produced by the band and Ian Laughton at Rockfield Studios in Wales. For the recording, Matthew, Daniel, and Ira were joined by their friend and longtime keyboard player Louie Lino.

Moon Mirror is a thrilling and moving leap forward for Nada Surf. The songs on the album are true to the human experience--as meaningful and mysterious and sometimes absurd as it is. There's love, yes, but also grief, deep loneliness, doubt, wonder, and hope. These are not the songs of a band in their 20s. There is hard-won wisdom here, and hard-won belief in possibility--the kind that comes from falling down and getting back up.

"Give Me The Sun" ("I'm looking for something/ I can't say exactly what"), "Second Skin" ("I'm tired of living in this second skin/ I want to let everything in"), and "Moon Mirror"("connect me to something") grapple with being present and open, paying attention, and seeking connection in a world that feels alienating with its everything-all-at-once-ness. "In Front of Me Now" is a song against multi-tasking and sleepwalking through the one life we have. The song asks, "Why wasn't I present? I could have been living," and shows us a transformation in the chorus: "Today, I do what's in front of me now." I don't know about you, but I need this reminder as much as ever.

Nada Surf has been working together for decades, and they're consistently excellent, but they always surprise me. That's what great art does. For nearly 30 years, Nada Surf has been a part of the soundtrack of my life. Our lives. I fell hard for the band over Let Go in 2002, and following that, The Weight Is a Gift, in 2005. Those songs are lodged in my body, someplace they'll never be extracted from. So are songs from The Proximity Effect, Lucky, The Stars Are Indifferent to Astronomy, and Never Not Together, which was my favorite record of 2020. Moon Mirror will take its place among the others, in heavy rotation.

Four years ago, during lockdown, I was listening to Nada Surf one morning. My son, then seven years old, was quiet, and then he said, "They sing a lot about love."

What he said next has stuck with me: "It protects you."

Love protects you. If you need convincing, I think Moon Mirror will do just that. Lucky, lucky us to have had Nada Surf's music with us for all of these years, and lucky, lucky us to have these new songs now, right when we need them most.

by esquiresmith on 6/28/12Headliners Music Hall - Louisville

Great concert, band played hard, sound was good, light crowd but it was a Sunday night. After the concert the band members came out and talked to those who hung around. Played all the good songs.

    Nada Surf is constistantly fantastic!

by igotkittypryde on 4/10/12Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

Nada Surf is definitely one of my all-time favourite bands. I have seen them play nearly every show in NYC since '07 and I am NEVER, EVER disappointed. On top of that, The Music Hall of Williamsburg is a great venue! I recommend seeing a show here and I ALWAYS recommend seeing Nada Surf. Not only are they so talented, they are incredibly sweet. Often they can be found mingling with their fans before and after their shows. I LOVE THEM!

    Hard Rock/Good Times

by newnadasurfer on 4/9/12Webster Hall - New York

I got the tickets to go with someone else as a gift, but having "studied up" over the last month, I figured I'd know enough of their songs to enjoy the show. Not only did I enjoy the show, but it took my appreciation of the band to a whole new level! They sounded great live and played with super energy, keeping the whole show a lot of fun. Now I'm buying the albums so I can sing along with more of the songs next time! There will definitely be a next time.

Not crowded, wish a few older songs were mixed in......great audience participation. Happy i saw NADA SURF period. Sound up in the balcony was muffled, carpet on the floors not suitable for proper acoustics. upstairs could have used more speakers to even things out. This is at the paradise in alston MA

The band was great as always, they still sound fresh and the sound is as clean as ever. It's impressive how strong the vocals still are, through the years. Love them and can't wait for the next album!

Nada Surf was AMAZING! Please come back!

by Funtimes2012 on 4/4/12The Fonda Theatre - Hollywood

The show was amazing. Despite coming down with a cold Matthew and the band put on a great performance. I think though they should come back and play for Los Angeles again!

    Bliss!

by meetingintheaisle on 3/23/12The Fonda Theatre - Hollywood

I've seen Nada Surf live around ten times and they have never disappointed. Matthew tells great stories that connect the crowd to the songs even more so. He doesn't talk too much so as to take away from the musical experience. He gives just the right amount of pertinent gems of info. Matthew said he was fighting off a cold, but you wouldn't be able to tell by his singing. They played a good mix of new and older songs. I was so happy to hear "Killian's Red"! I hope they come back to California soon.

Great show in an intimate setting. It was nice to be able to see and hear everything perfectly! They played a good range of past and present material...a little more of a light show would

Even though Matthew was sick and probably in a bit of pain from straining, he still sang an amazingly flawless 2 hour set! Nada Surf=Bliss

A bad Nada show is still pretty good

by BigJimSlade on 3/22/12The Fonda Theatre - Hollywood

I've seen Nada Surf live 6-7 times over the years, and this was my 3rd time seeing them at the Fonda. This particular crowd sucked horribly. Nobody was into the music at all. I know LA crowds are infamous for just standing around but I've never seen such a lifeless audience for a rockin band in my life. I was also not a big fan of the set list. I realize they have a new album to promote, but let's face it, it's nowhere near as good as earlier efforts like, "Let Go." So with the new songs taking priority, older classics that I always love (no pun intended) to hear live took a backseat. But, as the title says, a bad Nada show is still better than a lot of other bands.

    Nada Surf - Lackluster

by nada123 on 3/22/12The Fonda Theatre - Hollywood

Let me first start by saying, that I am a HUGE Nada Surf fan. I bought 6 tickets for their first US show. First, let's start by talking about their support band, An Horse. Wow...now a band doesn't want to be upstaged, but I wanted to kill myself. Worst ever. All I can say. Now Nada. Their new record sucks. Let's be honest. The problem is, that a band has to play a number of new songs in a set to promote. This is a problem, because their previous material was so good and as a result were to play WAY less of that. They looked tired and unenthusiastic. Plus, they made a TON of mistakes. Wasn't pretty...sad really.

    Nada Surf hasn't ever disappointed

by ThomMMmmmmm on 3/22/12The Fonda Theatre - Hollywood

I have loved Nada Surf since they stumbled into a cheesy Santa Barbara landmark "Toes Tavern"...just after they released "The Proximity Effect" on their own label. Have been listening with keen interest ever since. Some of the nicest guys in rock and fantastic players. A great night for me, I enjoyed it as much as I had hoped I would.

NADA SURF IS THE REAL DEAL!!!!!

by BIGMOVIE on 12/18/10Mercury Lounge - New York

If you are looking for a fun, talented, energetic, and thoughtful band Nada Surf is all that and a bag of chips! This was my third time seeing them live and it was nothing short of amazing. They played from about 10:50 to a little after midnight with the same enthusiasm and high spirits throughout. I am already looking forward to seeing them again!

    Nada Surf great as usual

    by JMY47 on 6/3/10Wonder Ballroom - Portland

I've yet to see a mediocre Nada Surf show, and this was no different. The Wonder is a great venue, intimate with good sound and very reasonable bar pricing. Nada Surf played 2 encores and a variety of songs from all LPs. They are a killer group and still under most everyone's radar. Opening act Telekinesis also played a nice set and was joined for a few songs by Anya (sp?) Marina and the finale with Matthew Caws.
