MIKE & THE MECHANICS IN CONCERT:

Pop rock supergroup Mike & The Mechanics began as a Genesis offshoot in the mid-'80s and quickly become a sensation in their own right with arena-sized anthems about patriotism, fatherhood, and love. At the band's career-spanning live shows timeless ballads like "The Living Years" and "Over My Shoulder" sound as fresh as they did fifteen years ago, moving ticket buyers of all generations with soaring melodies and poignant lyrics. Mike and Company temper their slower tunes with upbeat favorites like "Silent Running" and "All I Need Is a Miracle", giving their '80s synthpop counterparts a run for their money with exuberant performances that always get fans dancing. Whether they're taking it fast or slow, Mike & The Mechanics deliver a feel-good concert experience for new and true fans alike.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Mike Rutherford, guitarist for legendary British rock band Genesis, formed Mike & The Mechanics as a side project in 1985. Together with lead singer Paul Carrack, Rutherford penned a string of late-'80s chart smashes that established the band as one of the UK's preeminent soft rock groups. They hit the ground running with their self-titled 1985 debut album, climbing the charts with catchy singles like "Silent Running" and "Taken In". Superstardom followed just a few years later when their 1989 sophomore album The Living Years peaked at No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart, topping charts in the US and Europe with its title track. Despite several lineup changes the band remained a consistent chart presence throughout the '90s and '00s thanks to popular albums like 1995's Beggar on a Beach of Gold and 2004's Rewired. Following Carrack's departure the band went on hiatus from 2004 until 2010, when Rutherford reemerged with a completely new lineup. The new formation's debut together, 2011's The Road, proved they had lost none of their magic, drumming up anticipation among fans for their future tours.

Not bad but beware of the VIP/Meet/Greet policies.

by SessionGuy1 on 3/18/18Parker Playhouse - Fort Lauderdale

I have been a hardcore Genesis fan my entire life. I have done VIP/Meet/Greets with Steve Hackett and, just two days ago, with Mike and the Mechanics. (Most fans know that Mike is Mike Rutherford of Genesis.) That is the main reason I went. He and the other band members of the Mechanics were very cordial and nice. BUT, of all the Meet/Greets I've done, this one was WAY too rushed. I was only able to spend, literally, about 15 seconds with Mike, et al. And the liaison person said there were no autographs allowed. This is unacceptable for a Meet/Greet, especially for the 200 dollar price tag. I was second in line and noticed after I was done that Mike actually did sign for a few people who were brave enough to ask anyway. But, autographs should be automatically allowed, in my view. By contrast, when I did this at a Hackett show at the same venue in 2016, Hackett spent almost about 5 minutes with each person and signed autos on any two items they brought. And the liaison person took multiple pics of each fan with Hackett, rather than the one or two that each fan got with Rutherford. And there were about the same amount of fans in each case; about 30. That all said, I was happy that he/they played two Genesis songs (and a little of another). And they played most of their own hits too. Overall, they are a very tight band. I've no complaints about the show itself other than I would have liked a couple more Genesis songs. I'd say to go see these guys but get the cheaper tickets. But, if you do decide on the Meet/Greet, just keep all of the above in mind. Maybe if you know all this ahead of time, you won't be disappointed like I was. (Also, there was no swag bag, as there often is for Meet/Greet ticket holders.) (SPOILER ALERT: I will mention the Genesis songs below.)

Mike and the Mechanics great show

by Mordalo on 3/23/15Michigan Theater - Ann Arbor

A great concert in a classic theatre setting. The sound was outstanding. Nice to go to a concert and not spend $100's of $'s to enjoy a good band and concert. I would definitely go back to the Michigan Theatre in Ann Arbor for a concert.

Aside from one woman bitchin behind us that this is not what she paid for, and the group in front that wouldn't stop being up and obstructing our view, this was a wonderful show. I'm familiar with Genesis music and they did play some of that, but without having a preconceived idea of what to be listening to, the music and performance was great!

I have to say this was an incredible show. Mike and the Mechanics by themselves were awesome, but as a long time Genesis fan hearing Mike jamming on a couple Genesis tunes was the icing on the cake. Great Show!!!!!

Mike and the Mechanics was fabulous !!

by Toonces57 on 3/18/15Hard Rock Rocksino Northfield Park Hard Rock Live - Northfield

The band was exceptional and played a wide range of selections that really showed the diversity of all members of the group. The lead singers were outstanding, and highlighted themselves and the group. Mike Rutherford and the band payed homage to the history of this group and acknowleged where they came from adding a couple of songs from Genesis. They could have played for another hour ... it was that good! If you are on the fence about purchasing tickets to see them don't it was an exceptional evening.

    Uplifting!

by Humminbirdie on 3/17/15Michigan Theater - Ann Arbor

Although the crowd was sparse, these world-class musicians put on a highly-energetic and spirit-lifting performance. The vocals were perfectly blended and powerful. Loved the concert!!

    Mike and the Mechanics......Awesome

by Jethrobodean7 on 3/17/15Michigan Theater - Ann Arbor

Mike Rutherford and his "Mechanics" gave an outstanding performance. His musicianship along with the rest of the band was shining and superb and highlighted his songwriting skill. They gave a bluesy edge to the melodic setlist that contained some hidden gems as well as the required hits. The crowd was small but well into the music. The cover of Rutherfords/Genisis hit "We Cant Dance" was raw and gritty and blew away the original version, especially Tim Howars vocals. The other vocalist Andrew Roachford was just as amazing and played some Stevie Wonder "Superstition" on keyboards during the encore. The rest of the band was top notch and the sound and energy was fantastic. "Nobodies Perfect" was absolutely perfect and I thought it was the highlight of the show.

    Well worth the wait!

by ButchMingus on 3/17/15Michigan Theater - Ann Arbor

I have been listening to Mike + the Mechanics since they began in 1985. I own all of their albums (even though I had to purchase M6, Rewired, The Road and The Hits as imports). The opening act, Daryl Strumner, was OK. He recorded himself on bass, keyboards and drums on his laptop and played 5 instrumentals (a Peter Gabriel cover, a Police cover, a Jeff Beck cover, and two original pieces). I felt bad for Mike + the Mechanics that so few tickets were sold (about 400 in a theater that hold 1,700). But that didn't stop them from giving 100% to the entire performance! The two current singers, Tim Howar and Andrew Roachford, are extremely talented and did a great job! 10 of the songs performed can be found of the newest "Hits" collection. There were also two Genesis covers and a Roachford cover. I very much enjoyed the show and glad I went.

Another Great Mike & the Mechanics Show

by HWA2 on 3/17/15Michigan Theater - Ann Arbor

It's 20 years since I last saw them in Edinburgh and even with the re-formed group the performance was memorable and enjoyable. They deserved more people to be there .... but pre concert publicity was severly lacking. Don't miss them if they are in your area.

by spankyray on 3/17/15Michigan Theater - Ann Arbor

I have attended Thousands of concerts in my life and am a professional musician. They were the worse sounding band I have ever heard BASS rumbling out of control, As a matter of fact guitar players CAN NOT play bass.

by Flubbernutter on 3/15/15Wilbur Theatre - Boston

Always been a big fan of their music, lyrics and sound. First time I have seen them live! New players in the band other than Mike Rutherford and the drummer but they are great entertainers and vocalists! and you cannot tell the difference...Loved the show! Went out and bought 2 of their CDs that I did not have.

    Not one I will remember

by Vertablue on 3/13/15Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Toronto

First off show was to start at 8. 8:15 a guitar player walks on stage, does not give his name, plays 4 songs, leaves. Who the hell is he?? Sorry maybe I should recognize every guitar player in the world by site!! Anyways mike and company graces us with their presence at 9:00. One of the lead singers was extremely over the top in his onstage actions ( look at me I'm great type) overall the audience was given what they came for. Musically a good show. The theatre Queen Elizabeth centre needs to be torn down, 1974 has seen its day, what a dump!!

    Memories

    by Dutch80 on 3/10/15Wilbur Theatre - Boston

The sole purpose in attending the show was to hear one song and one song only, "In the Living Years" Had the show been nothing but this song my wife and I would have been very pleased. Instead--very good show, singing, stage presence--which all made for a very enjoyable night--capped off with the song which means so much

    Current lineup is phenomenal

by KlaatuBob on 3/10/15Wilbur Theatre - Boston

The music of Mike & The Mechanics is the soundtrack to a generation. These albums inspired many of my friends, informed our social conscience, and provided a release for some of the angst of our generation and an outlet for the high points in our lives as well. Hearing them performed live and seeing how much enjoyment the band got out of performing them in front of an audience was a truly rewarding experience. While I was disappointed that Paul Carrack, one of the world's greatest singing voices, would not be there, the two current vocalists will certainly make you forget that fact real quickly. Their handling of everything from the first hits to some Genesis songs to tracks from their more recent release The Road was truly first rate. They have phenomenal voices and are a fantastic addition to the group. I wish they would drop "Seeing Is Believing" from the setlist, though. The theme that those who believe in anything are truly extremists is offensive. There are extremists out there in every walk of life, from scientists to aetheists to religious people and everywhere in between. To group believers in Jesus with the mujahedin is offensive and ignorant of the vast differences in the two. If that's the only complaint I have about the concert, then they've truly done a phenomenal job. This was definitely one of the most enjoyable concerts I've ever been to. Bravo!

by madfloyd on 3/10/15Wilbur Theatre - Boston

Attended Mike & the M's at the Wilbur Saturday March 7th. I didn't quite know what to expect with the 2 singers not being the originals, but it was one of the better concerts I have seen in a while. The band was excellent and full of soul. I couldn't stop boogieing the entire time.

    Amazing Concert

by Sasciegirl on 3/5/15Birchmere - Alexandria

It was their first tour stop & Mike & the Mechanics put on a great show at the Birchmere! Wow, our first time at the Birchmere and we have to ask ourselves, "why did it take so long for us to check this place out?" There wasn't a bad seat in the house and the sound was perfect! We were so close to the stage that we could touch the band. Our favorite songs, "Living Years", "All I need is a Miracle," you name it...it brought back great memories. The opening act, "Steve Poltz" was very entertaining and was a great set-up for the main event. If you want to see a performance up close and personal, the Birchmere is your next venue.

Mike and the Mechanics - Spectacular Show!

by Scooter87 on 3/5/15Sands Bethlehem Event Center - Bethlehem

Really enjoyed seeing them live again after 25 years! Hearing all the songs I love was unforgettable. The Genesis songs really topped the evening as a wonderful bonus!
