The Monkees better than in 1997

by gerrym on 6/6/11Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

I went to the Monkees concert a little concerned they would disappoint as the had not played together in years. I was greatly suprised . The voices were great and they seemed to mesh like they had never beeen apart. They were funny and relaxed sounding great. The giant screen showed some of the funniest parts of the TV show and movie head. They played all their biggest hits . The show lasted till minutes before Chastain's 1100pm cutoff. They seemed not to want to give up the stage and almost everyone stayed to the last minute(unusal for this venue where patons often leave early). Best show of the year so far.

    Glad I went

by Concert111 on 6/6/11Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

They joke about being old, but they still got it together. Running around all over the stage - never still. A trip down memory lane.

    What an AWESOME time!

by sunshinesmile78 on 6/6/11Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

Micky, Davy and Peter...they've still got it. The audience didn't really seem to come alive until after intermission though. But by then everyone was up on their feet dancing and singing along. The encore was great as well. It was also very bittersweet when the show ended and they walked off the stage. A Farewell Tour indeed, but I will never forget it!

For old guys, they put on a lively show

by classof71 on 6/6/11Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

Concert started 15 minutes late, but was worth the wait. Not counting the intermission, it was a solid 2 hours of entertainment and Monkees' antics. Mickey Dolenz voice has not gone away. The band added strength to the show with vocal help without overpowering the stars of the show.

    Fantastic show

by Miamidan on 6/6/11Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

I was expecting this to be a good show and it exceeded my expectations. The setlist was an excellent representation of the band's catalogue and at 40 songs contained room for both all their hits along with deep album cuts. The energy displayed by Tork, Dolenz and Jones did not betray their respective ages, as all three were fully engaged in the stage antics one would have expected to see from a much younger Monkees line-up. All 3 were in fine voice - especially Mickey Dolenz. Mickey and Davy occasionally strapped on acoustic guitars and joined Peter in the frontline of musicians. The crowd was the typical Chastain Park semi-subdued lot (except when the major hits were played, of course). Billy Bob Thornton was in attendance a couple of tables over from me, but as far as I could tell he never moved a muscle or cracked a smile from the beginning of the show until he was ushered backstage at the intermission. Forgetting the crowd, though, this was an unbelievable show from a band that morphed from a made-for-t.v group into a legitimate rock band that has the hits and the following to prove its credentials.

    Monkees wow 'em in Atlanta!

    by TDF3 on 6/6/11Chastain Park - Atlanta

I often attend concerts of classic / oldies artists, and I can honestly say that The Monkees show on June 3rd in Atlanta was one of the best I've seen in terms of the overall quality of the performance. All three sounded great and know how to give their fans what they want. The concert was about two and half hours long, with about a 15 minute intermission. They performed all of the hits you would expect to hear, and also highlighted a couple of songs from their movie "Head". During most songs, either photos or video highlights from their "prime" years were shown on the backdrop (they did seem to be working out issues with syncing the video with the song being played, but it was the first show of the tour). The band and backup singers they had were excellent, and Peter, Micky, and Davy are truly talented individuals. If you've EVER enjoyed The Monkees music, you owe it to yourself to catch them on this tour - you'll be glad you did!

    THE MONKEES still got it!!!!!

by HappyMet on 6/6/11Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

I am a child of the 60's & still listen to The MONKEES. I cried, laughed, danced & sang along for over TWO hours! The entire concert, clips from the TV show & HEAD were playing on the big screens. It's the Monday after & I'm sitting in my office playing The MONKEES on my iPod. I've been to MANY shows, including Elvis & Paul McCartney & this is one of THE BEST THINGS I'VE EVER EXPERIENCED!!!!

    Wonderful time!

by erin1683 on 6/6/11Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

The seats were generally good but there were people walking in front of us a lot to get to the bathroom or the tour merchandise area. There ended up being two women behind us that had too much alcohol and were kinda hitting me in the back from their dancing, even though that is not something that would happen to everyone. There needed to be more than one area for tour merchandise, the line was very long to wait in. Overall, we had a good time listening to the music and watching the tv episodes running behind the band on stage.

    The Monkees were sensational!

This concert was so much fun! It certainly took me back to my younger years! They definitely gave me and my girlfriends our money's worth.

    Hey, Hey they were great!

by TDKF on 6/6/11Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

We had to wait a good 20-25 minutes to get into Chastain which was a pain standing there in the heat. However, the music was great. Davy was his usual jerky self but that is Davy.

    Monkees

by maranatha on 6/6/11Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

It got so loud toward the end that I covered my ears - think they should have dispersed their well known songs among those that were less known - you could see the crown reaction to the known songs (they were on their feet - clapping, swaying, singing. But most of the time there were just siting there.

    Monkees were fantastic!

The show started out enjoyable, but it was too long. I would have preferred that they play straight thru without an intermission. They do not have that many songs for the length of the show. After a while the video screens showing clips of their TV show also got annoying because they kept repeating.

    Monkees-what happened???

by Researchnursie on 6/6/11Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

I'm a "hard core" Monkee fan and went to their concerts over the last 30 years. However; this event was not as good as the past. Where did they get these songs from and why didn't they sing more of their songs? The intermission was "lame", but did love the big screen pics of the past. They really didn't sing most of their oldies that made them an icon until after the intermission. Davey didn't sing "Girl"!! :( Mickey screamed during most of his songs! I would of liked them to talk about their families or what's going on in their lives.

    Sound, Song Selection Both Poor

by Clydesdale931 on 6/6/11Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

Not quite knowing what to expect for the Monkees first U.S. show in ten years, I sat down with my wife at the Chastain Park Amphitheater in Atlanta Friday, ready for the smooth pop sounds of the "Pre-Fab Four". It was clear from the beginning that Micky, Davy and Peter were making no effort to connect with the audience, possibly with the assumption that the crowd was so familiar with the tunes that they needed no introductions or between song banter. So there was none. The drums were way too loud in the mix, which was mostly mid-range, and Micky's vocals confounded the sound-man. When Micky sang some tunes he was almost inaudible, causing the technician to give him a boost, which in turn made him too loud on other songs. What the group lacked in vocal quality they made up for in sheer volume. My absolute favorite tune, "The Porpoise Song", was massacred by a cheezy arrangement and ridiculously mixed sound. The show was a disappointment over-all, with the bright spot being Peter Tork's fantastic guitar and french horn.

    Excellent show

    The Monkees are timeless!

by GreenImpishGrin on 6/6/11Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

I throughly enjoyed the Monkees show on Friday, 6/3/11, at Chastain. They played a wide variety of songs. I loved that they represented Papa Nez and gave props to him during the show. Michael Nesmith songs are among my favorite of their catalog. My only complaint was that the sound wasn't quite right for some of the songs Micky sang while playing the drums. But they put on a high energy show and did not disappoint. I could have stayed for two more hours of show!

    Too long too loud

by drgiovan on 6/6/11Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

I've been to over 80 concerts in my life. I had to cover my ears because this was the loudest ever. Mickey Dolenz has a very strong voice but doesn't know how to work a mic. Mickey - don't eat the mic when you sing loudly!! Way too many unfamiliar songs. I think they did every song played in every TV show. I would have been much happier with an hour show split with another act. Regarding graphics: there was a huge screen behind the singers that showed nothing but old clips. Two really small screen on the sides of the stage showed the live concert feeds. Put the old footage on the smaller screens and show the live feed on the big screen so we can see the performers for God's sake.

That was then, This is now

by NoPblm on 6/6/11Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

Good show even though voices are not what they used to be. Talented backup band that carried the boys through the vocals. Peter dressed similar to what we would expect from a Monkee but Davey & Mickey need to trend back their outfits so we can see them as we we did so many years ago. Loved the videos of the good old days throughout the show and kudos to them for playing all the songs we wanted to hear. Pretty decent comaraderie among the 3 Monkees pretty good but they could use some fresher comedic moments. (For example, I don't think "Sears & Robuck" is a relevant punchline in 2011.)
