    The Mike Nesmith Show

by Perswauder on 4/14/13Union County Performing Arts Center - Rahway

First of all, the positives: Mike played, sang and spoke poetry very good and his back up band was top notch. Mr. Nsmith was in good form and it was cool seeing him on stage. Now the negatives: Of the approximate 15 songs performed, he only did 1 Monkees song!!! All the others(with the exception of a watered down version of "Different Drum"-Ronstead's being superior) were from his 15+ solo albums . . . . O.K. so he distances himself from the Monkees . . .O.K. but only 1 Monkees song! The other thing that really upset me was this "Meet and Greet" ticket thing . .I read that all these tickets were sold out in less than an hour . . .I have a hobby of going to celebrity events to meet the stars (I met the other 3 Monkees) and I really wanted to get an autogragh and a picture with Mike Nesmith but NO!!!! I tried after the show and was told that I needed a ?Meet and Greet" ticket which I certainly would have purchased if given the chance but I was not given a chance. This is so unfair to someone like myself who really wants to meet a specific celebrity.

Lucy, Ramona, and their brother Sunset Sam

by SandSpock33 on 4/14/13Union County Performing Arts Center - Rahway

Mike Nesmith gave more than one would expect. Voice soaring seeming effortlessly. His band was at the top of the top notch players. These guys were Good. Rarely are concerts so beautifully sounding. Nor are audiences so respectful and reverential to each word spoken setting the songs up. A Magic performance, even though he didn't play "Magic". Last time Nez blessed us was 1992 at NYC Lone Star. Concerts like this don't happen more than once or twice in a lifetime. I hope thrice once day.

    Outstandingly sublime

by cstrinz on 4/8/13Fitzgerald Theater - St Paul

Nesmith is better than ever, with a perfectly matched backup band. It would be cool to see them all tour with Jimmy Buffett. Nesmith's introductions were nice reminders of his visual work, pioneering an otherwise. The man obviously thinks in images that he has the ability to convert into sublime songs. My one criticism would be that his vocal mic wasn't hot enough, and seemed to get worse as the concert went on. I saw him with The Monkees last year, which was also a hoot, but it was fun to get a more intimate show at The Fitz. I found tears running down my cheeks at times. I almost hate to say that. Almost. But that's what great art does to me.

    Papa Nez the Great

by 1Roady on 4/8/13Fitzgerald Theater - St Paul

A musical journey with "Nez" as your pilot. Love felt from both the stage and the crowd. A lovely evening with a fantastic singer/songwriter. He can still rock, and he can still be tender. He can tell a story, make you laugh and make you think. Respect for this amazing performer is long overdue. A must see for those in towns still waiting. Music icon is an understatement.

    Quite the troubadour

by KTRas on 4/7/13Fitzgerald Theater - St Paul

I took my dad to the show in St Paul. I've always been a big Monkees fan - with Michael's songs being my favorites - and have paid some attention to his solo stuff. I wasn't sure what to expect with this show, and was very pleasantly surprised with the direction of the evening. Michael presented a brief vignette to set the mood behind the song before playing. It was a wonderful way to listen to his music. The quality of the musicianship was wonderful and gave me a higher appreciation for Michael than I already had...and that's saying something. My dad said it was one of the best concerts he has ever been to. I have to agree - and I go to at least 6-8 concerts a year. The only down side was that we were in the 3rd row center and his ipad blocked his face entirely. Next time (if he comes out again) I'll make sure to get seats off to the side a little.

    Papa Nez <3

    by Andrea27 on 4/6/13Fitzgerald - St. Paul

Plain and simple: Nesmith was and is AMAZING! I never thought I would ever get to see him, but my dream came true and what a great dream it was. I brought my 57-year old dad and 18-year old brother and we all fell in love with his story telling, his band, and his smiles. He and the band are so talented! I loved how Nez showed a lot of respect for them by introducing them after the first song and at the end, and while they were doing each of their solo parts of a song, Nez backed up and had his back facing us as if to say, "Really watch these amazing people play!" His stories really put you in the mood and made the audience laugh and really enjoy themselves. I can honestly say it's the best concert I've been to yet. (BTW others I've went to to compare: The Monkees, The Who, Ringo Starr, Bob Dylan, The Black Keys, The Arctic Monkeys, The Shins, etc.)

    Still Mike

by FrankieBeatlette on 3/31/13The Canyon - Agoura Hills

Smart and funny, Mike presented his songwriting canon (some of it, anyway) in a new and interesting way - in a cinematic context. Only Monkees' tune was Papa Jean's Blues, but all of the great solo hits were there. My personal faves, Rio, Joanne, Silver Moon, Different Drum, and the masterful Cruisin', complete with the inside scoop on casting the actors for the video, were highlights for me. Not happy with the meet and greet situation - apparently it was posted at 1 am and only 25 people got in - not fun for me as I have an album for MIke to sign that I have been carting around for 36 years.

Not at The Palace Of Fine Arts

by Stingerwolf on 3/30/13Great American Music Hall - San Francisco

The only negative for Michael's show was that it was switch to the Great American music hall, from the Palace of Fine Arts. No adjustment in price for the switch. The seat set up at GAMH was pretty crappy and uncomfortable. But Michael's show was good.

    Fantastic show!

by Thadeus11 on 3/29/13Palace of Fine Arts - San Francisco

Mr. Nesmith was a rare treat for my wife, 32 yr old son and 14 year old daughter. He sang with passion and introduced each song adding a deeper insight into the song. I have been a big fan for years and this was a high point for me. Mr. Nesmith is a treasure.

Mike Nesmith at Great American Music Hall

by karaokegalSF on 3/29/13Palace of Fine Arts - San Francisco

What a lovely, intimate show! Mike was a warm, charming and gracious presence. The playlist included songs from his entire solo career, including the expected (Joanne, Different Drum) the longed for (Rio), the obscure (songs from a song-cycle called The Prison, which I was unfamiliar with) and even one Monkees song as the opener. Mike gave us a setting and image to go with each piece, and some of the songs were given surprising musical settings as well. I would never have imagined Different Drum as a French Chanson, but it totally worked. This was a late change of venue, but even though I wish more people had been interested, I think the style worked much better at the Great American than it would have at the Palace of Fine Arts.

A big disappointment after waiting 15 years

by eskiepup on 3/29/13Palace of Fine Arts - San Francisco

I gave this concert two stars only because of loyalty to Michael. As loyal fans, we waited 15 years to hear Michael live, only to be extremely disappointed. First, rather than the excellent reserved seats we thought we would enjoy at the Palace of Fine Arts, we had to fight for crappy, extremely uncomfortable seats, with a lousy view behind a pillar, on an overcrowded floor, at the Great American. Second, lousy acoustics at the Great American. Third, lousy sound mixing. The music was too loud, there was too much bass, and Michael's voice was turned down so low there were times you couldn't hear the words over the instruments. Fourth, what was the point of the silly "vignettes" he told before each song. They added nothing to the music, at least not for long time fans like us. Fifth, and perhaps most important, he played very few of his truly great songs, such as Joanne and Rio, and those he did play he "reinterpreted" in such a boring way as to strip them of their "swing", i.e., their original essence. And finally, an extremely short set (although this turned out to be a blessing in disguise, since the show was so bad). Michael, take a lesson from Leonard Cohen, who knows how to treat his fans. After a similarly long wait for a live concert, Leonard played for three hours, with many encores, leaving an arena full of ecstatic and satiated fans.

    Mediocre, at best

by Pmaes on 3/29/13Palace of Fine Arts - San Francisco

The venue was changed to the Great American Music Hall on O'Farrell which is little more than a bar with a stage. The security guy was an ass. Nesmith was disappointing. Seems very full of himself. Sorry I went, never again.

    Great Show

by MarCee10 on 3/29/13Palace of Fine Arts - San Francisco

Michael puts on a very entertaining show. He only plays one Monkees song, Papa Gene's Blues, but he has a deep solo catalog that he interprets in a very entertaining way. He introduces each song like the opening paragraphs of a novel, setting the scene and explaining the meaning of the song. He's a very entertaining speaker, with a good narrative voice. Each song is given a distinct sonic landscape by his very talented backing band. Mike still sings very well, too. If you are a Michael Nesmith fan, you will enjoy this show.

Great Show, Too Many Venue Surprises

by LaylaFace on 3/29/13Palace of Fine Arts - San Francisco

Michael Nesmith was originally slated to play at the Palace of Fine Arts but was switched to the Great American Music Hall last minute. The show itself was everything I was hoping it would be - I've been wanting to see Michael Nesmith since I was 12. The change in venue caused some extra expenses I wasn't expecting - drinks, parking, open seating instead of assigned seating. We still had a great time, managed to snag great seats and loved, loved, loved the show. I do love the Great American Music Hall, but was caught a little off guard by the switch.

If you love Papa Nez, you'll love his show!

by JediCat on 3/26/13The Canyon - Agoura Hills

If you are a Monkees fan, this show might not be for you - There is only one Monkees song in the show - Papa Gene's Blues. If you love Nesmith's solo work, than this show is for you! Nez is his charming, witty, twinkle-in-his-eye self. He glows with joy for the music. The styles are all very laid-back and cool, but varied. Nez "sets the scene" before each tune with a beautifully crafted narrative that really brings more meaning and depth to the music. His band mates are very skilled and the show is tight. This performance lasted about 1 hour and 45 minutes - just right! Buy your tickets early, make your dinner reservation early, get there early that day (2 hours before doors open). Have your tickets already (no will call). That gets you seated up front. The Canyon Club dinner food is often not great and over-priced. However, my vegetable lasagna was pretty good (still over-priced), and my creme brulee was quite good. Cocktails were good, not great (and over-priced). Bottom line is, you have to do dinner if you want to sit close. So don't expect gourmet and you'll be fine. I really enjoyed this show

A real treat for any Nez fan!

by Papagena on 3/26/13The Canyon - Agoura Hills

Michael Nesmith was in great form. He picked a great group of guys to be his band. I enjoyed the new arrangements of several of his greatest hits. I also enjoyed his set-ups of each set of songs; it was like poetry or a short story before each song or set of songs. Although I could only afford "standing room only" tickets it was so worth it to have this once in a lifetime experience.
