Nothing Like the MEW - Live Experience!
by moodygina on 12/1/09Trocadero - PhiladelphiaI've seen MEW a few times in the past, but this show at the Troc on November 30th was probably one of their best out of the performances I've seen. Although there was a bit of an issue with the sound initially, the band overcame it, and they blazed through their hits without stop. Although they did perform a few from their latest, No More Stories.... the focus tended to be on prior releases such as Frengers and And the Glass Handed Kites. While I love most everything MEW releases, I have to say I would have loved to hear some more from the latest release. Still, the few that they did play, Repeaterbeater, Beach, and Hawaii to name a few came off beautifully. MEW is a band that really is hard to describe, while they are not alternative, they are truly and alternative to everything that exist out there today in the world of popular music. They have a lush sound, almost like that of an orchestra but in fact they are a band made up of 3 with 2 other accompanying players. The richness in their sound fills up a small space and just floats in the air, and in a big space it is the same without losing the intimacy of the performance. Jonas Bjerre' s voice is just too fantastic to describe. Calling it beautiful sounds a bit bland, but the fact is, he truly has a beautiful voice. But MEW is only as good as the sum of its parts and their drummer Silas, and guitarist Bo Madsen, support Jonas greatly on the musical journey that his voice takes the listener on. All and all a great night and a great show. No Frenger (what MEW calls its fans) left unhappy, and no new comer could have possibly left without being moved. I'm just so happy that they came back to the US. When they stop touring, they stop for a long time. So, I was grateful for this show in my home town, and I'm doubly grateful that they are playing NYC this weekend, so I'll get to see them again.
