About

For over half a century Merle Haggard has been a champion of the misunderstood, the outcasts, and yes, even the outlaws. Forging a new path because the one Nashville had charted was too polished and removed from real life for his liking, Haggard and his Bakersfield brethren (including Buck Owens) were the forefathers of the alt country movement that took root in the '90s. In fact, fans inclined to buy tickets to Wilco or Ryan Adams would find themselves right at home alongside fans of more traditional country at a Merle Haggard concert, connecting with the man who once described himself as an "Okie from Muskogee" - an uncompromising truth teller who never turned his mind or heart away from the working class. While the last of the Country Music Hall of Famer's staggering 37 No. 1 hits may have been in 1986, his recent albums prove that while time marches on his talent and vision remain steadfast. As he's shown on tour as well as in 2010's aptly titled album I Am What I Am, Haggard is as sharp a social critic as ever. Meanwhile his 2012 album Working In Tennessee proved that despite the title, his heart is still firmly in Bakersfield - and fans are all the better for it.

We saw Don Williams here and thought that was the best concert we had ever attended. Well, Merle was almost as good. Still has a great voice and his band was outstanding.

    Merle Haggard

by BigShot on 7/14/09Robinson Center Music Hall - Little Rock

I love Merle Haggard. He is absolutely the best. I actually got down on one knee on the front row at this show and proposed to my girlfriend while Merle was singing " The Way I Am". She said yes. We got a big ovation. Merle didnt notice us. On the other hand. I could tell that Ol Merle was feeling real tired and didnt really feel like playing. He only played about 45 minutes. I have seen him several times and this wasn't a great show. I think he needs to rest up awhile before doing any more shows. I am not upset with him but I would have liked him to play at least an hour and a half. We paid a lot of money and deserved to get our moneys worth. If his health isnt up to snuff then he needs to heal on up before half assing a show. That being said. I still love Merle and I will still go see him every chance I get.

    reviewing the Hag

by tmerton on 7/10/09Orpheum Theatre Sioux City - Sioux City

The Hag started out slow but finished with a nice flow with help with his friends. His young 16 year oldBen can pick a mean guitar and theTravelers kept up with the changing songs without a hitch. The Hag never missed a line or a note and transitioned between the fiddle and guitar with moves a younger man would envy. The Hag still has IT!

    Merle Haggard--Truly Amazing!

by Pollock on 7/9/09Orpheum Theatre Sioux City - Sioux City

On July 8, in Sioux City, Iowa, we enjoyed the "best of the best." We knew Merle Haggard had fought the cancer battle; so we didn't know what to expect. He came on stage and the audience gave him a standing ovation before he sang one note! He sang old songs, new songs--many that he has written. His guitar playing was stellar! He appeared to gain energy as he performed and perform he did for a full 90 minutes--amazing!! His band of "Strangers" is made up of multi-talented musicians--including his 16-year-old son. Haggard and Company ended the concert with a rousing "I'll Fly Away", leaving the stage to another standing ovation.

    Merle Haggard - amazing show

by dclands on 7/9/09Orpheum Theatre Sioux City - Sioux City

It was amazing how good a show Merle performs. He has a great group with him and the program was very similar to an Opry show. It was nice to see him promoting some young new talent. This is a show I would see again. Keep on keeping on Merle.

    Merle the Pearl

by BongoGirl on 7/9/09Orpheum Theatre Sioux City - Sioux City

Just saw Merle Haggard last nite at the Sioux City Orpheum. What a show! Merle's voice is still perfect and he put on a wonderful show. He sang many of his original hits, new songs as well as a Johnny Cash song. His band is a stellar assortment of musicians with a lot of talent. Merle's 16 year old son plays lead guitar...every time Ben took the stage to play you could see Merle just light up and see how proud he was of his ultra-talented son. Great show.

    Hag is the best!

by Vick on 7/9/09Orpheum Theatre Sioux City - Sioux City

What a legend to see. Merle Haggard and the Strangers are as good or better than they ever were. His voice is so effortless and mellow. Loved hearing the old songs and his sense of humor while he talked to the audience! A+ showman.

    What a privilege!

by hagfan on 7/9/09Orpheum Theatre Sioux City - Sioux City

The man is a legend and it was a complete privilege to see him in concert again. His lyrics are poetic and so many songs tell a story about feelings and thoughts you've actually had.

    The 'Hag' was great!

by 4hisglory on 7/9/09Orpheum Theatre Sioux City - Sioux City

What a great evening! Was good to hear old songs so well done by the 'Hag' and his cohorts. Sure enjoyed watching the older fellas do their work and enjoying it so much. A comment about those who work at the Orpheum. We've always found them to be extremely pleasant and helpful. Last night, my knee(replaced twice) was really bothering me as I didn't have room to stretch it out. At the break, I asked a lady if we could move where I could do that. She said we could and we were able to sit in the chairs near the entrance on the Mez level. How I did appreciate it. Thanks again for bringing such quality entertainment to Sioux City over and over again.

    Merle Haggard Was Phenomenal

by martial on 7/9/09Orpheum Theatre Sioux City - Sioux City

At his age and with everything he has gone through in life, Merle Haggard's concert in Sioux City was the best of the best. I have seen many stars and concerts, and Merle's concert was an example of real American country music. He sounded great and looked like the icon that he is. His "beer hall" band consisted of first-class musicians with the maestro leading the way, the sound quality was excellent, and everything came together in an appealing manner. My hat is off and I am standing in respect of Merle Haggard.
