Just be warned it's a "modern" interpretation. And, that wasn't bad in itself, I just thought it was a bit overdone. And, they tried to play up "funny" lines, which ruined it a bit. Then, some of the actors shouted their lines in the hopes people would understand them better. A little frustrating.

    Merchant of Venice was terrific!

This production was very well done. They took some risks but they paid off. II was a great adaptation.

    Merchant of Venice

Acoustics were terrible. The acting, staging, and directing were incredibly inferior. This is grist for luring unwary tourists to a boring evening.

Still antisemitic though very well done

by superba on 3/28/11Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

This production set the play in modern garb, complete with cell phones and contemporary music, and it worked amazingly well. The acting was supurb, the staging interesting, but the voices could have been louder. My problem is that despite efforts to modernize the play, the antisemitism of this play could not be minimized, and left us extremely uncomfortable.

Outstanding production - up to date enough for adolescents and great acting for Shakespeare buffs...beautifully directed, great set. Hard to hear toward back of hall - miking inadequate for back of first floor - missed words.

    Stay away!

by Anonymous on 3/28/11Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

Having attended several Broadway productions, I was truly excited about the Merchant of Venice in Chicago. To say that I was exceptionally disapointed would be a gross understatement. My wife and I left the show at half time - had it not been for the location of our seats and the fact that we'd disturb other patrons, we'd have left earlier. What a waste of time and money. Whoever thought that setting such a great Shakespeare play in a "modern office" setting was a good idea should really not be allowed to produce Broadway shows.

Very nice modern production of The Merchant. I went with 2 friends and we enjoyed it thoroughly.

I thought the production was excellent - I was with my husband, sister and son - high school age - and he said it was the most interesting Shakespeare production he had attended. Contemporary setting for the merchant role and cast worked very well - brought out all the shared human experiences that Shakespeare does so well. It was a bit long - and a few elements seemed contrived in the modern-day approach, but overall really excellent.

    Merchant of Venice

by Papalarj on 3/25/11Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

The performance was dissappointing. First act is slow. It picks up a bit in the second act. A far cry from the movie version with Al Pacino as Shylock.

Terrific company, with no weak links

by CandaceofChicago on 3/25/11Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

A unique opportunity to see a brilliantly done most difficult and unhappy of plays. Having avoided it for years, due to anti Semitic storyline and end, what is with the rings and who cares by then....but F. Murray Abraham pulled off a marvelous performance of a not-so-marvelous man. Though our USPS mailed tickets never made it us, Ticketmaster allows people to pick up tickets (with appropriate ID) at box office. Won't risk USPS again.

The story is timeless. Set in modern times it was perfect. Human nature never changes. F. Murray Abraham was perfect. I loved it.

Restricted View Seats Not well attended

by UICFlamesMom on 3/24/11Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

These seats were in the Orchestra level, row F (6 rows back from first row Orchestra). Had a restricted view of the stage. Would never buy these seats again. Sad thing was that this was not a very well-attended performance--many open seats in the Orchestra level at least. Don't get seats past the third row in the Orchestra level at Bank of America Theatre! As far as the play itself, was well-acted, but a bit odd at first to see a Shakespeare play acted in the present time (men wore business suits, women in modern-day dresses/attire); however, after the initial "shock" it was really very good.

    The Merchant rocks

by emgate on 3/23/11Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

What a great way to put Shakespeare's play into modern time. The use of cell phones and laptops was just right and not overpowering. Made for some funny moments too. The actors were all great. And F.Murray Abraham amazing. Don't miss it!!

Very good show, stellar performance by Abraham

by gstef on 3/22/11Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

    F. Murray Abraham's portrayal humanizes the character of Shylok creating a feeling of deep sympathy for the man who may otherwise appear to be a villain. The only disappointment with this production involved the set. While the modernization of the show was interesting, set in modern times with technology and wall street references, I was hoping for a historical time period and the elaborate costumes that go with it.

Great performance by all! F. Murray Abraham as SHYLOCK and Kate MacCluggage as Portia were outstanding. Exceptionally great job!

    Merchant of venice

by Keob23 on 3/22/11Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

It was horrible, boring, had no real story. It was a joke and impossible to follow, almost to the extent that we felt that we had been tricked. The whole experience was quite shocking to think that such a farce could actually be in such a setting as this theatre. The crowd was pretty strange also even though we were next to a very friendly and cultured couple. I believe they were equally shell shocked but contained themselves.. Surly women in front of us with attitudes. I thought a fist fight might break out and I wasn't prepared for that. Had she started swinging I would have ducked and made a hasty exit.

    The Merchant of Venice

by MariaVanessa9 on 3/22/11Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

The acting was really good, but the stage set up was pretty poor. I don't think it was a good choice to have the actors speaking the language of Shakespeare and at the same time wear modern clothes, use mobile phones and apple computers: it truly didn't feel right!

Lovely performance of Merchant of Venice

by LeenieL on 3/21/11Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

Like many others in the audience, I was compelled to go in order to see F Murray Abraham. His performance was outstanding, as always, but so many of the other performers were so excellent also. The actress who played Portia, in particular, was so easy to listen to - she was just lovely. All in all, it was a wonderful afternoon.

I will never not have trouble with this play

by VGautreau on 3/21/11Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

The characters with whom Shakespeare wishes us to sympathize and identify will always make my skin crawl. Nevertheless, F. Murray Abraham's portrayal of Shylock is extremely moving. The conceit of setting the play in the current financial sector works, for the most part, except that the over-the-top anti-Semitism of the play would never now be tolerated. But one forgets this after a while in the glorious language.
