A member of Athletic Mic League and Now On, Ann Arbor native and longtime eclectic DJ/producer Andrew Cohen began recording soul-seeped material as something of a joke, not planning on it to reach beyond his circle of friends and family. Mayer Hawthorne, the pseudonym Cohen used for the songs, eventually took on a life of its own. When a couple Hawthorne songs were played for Peanut Butter Wolf, the Stones Throw label head was baffled; he initially thought he could have been hearing re-edits of obscure late-'60s/early-'70s soul singles, not the work of a multi-instrumentalist who laid everything down himself. Subsequently signed to Stones Throw, Cohen debuted Hawthorne with "Just Ain't Gonna Work Out" b/w "When I Said Goodbye," a pair of scratchy and bittersweet tales of heartache, on red, heart-shaped 7" vinyl. The "Maybe So, Maybe No" 12" followed shortly thereafter, which preceded the full-length A Strange Arrangement, released during fall 2009. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi

Seeing Mayer Hawthorne or Tuxedo live is always the best! Nice venue and good location! India Shawn, the opening act, was great. VIP is the way to go! Only wish we had known sooner ( like before day of!) that there would be no autographs or gifts accepted. Sooner notice of event protocols would be appreciated. I know it’s for everyone’s safety, just let us know ahead of time as we pack to travel!
Haven't seen Mayer Hawthorne in 10 years when I was a kid. I was so jazzed to see him again and he and his badass band were better than I expected. Such a fun show with great energy!
I've attended my fair share of meet & greet experiences over the years and can honestly say, this one was truly one of the BEST! Well worth the money, given the amount of time and attention we were each given. I adored the 2 "private" songs, and love the fact that this took place before the concert, as opposed to afterward. Keep up the awesome work, and please keep coming back to NC!
Loved the venue and absolutely loved the whole meet and greet experience with Mayer Hawthorne! The show was great!
Concert was a first at masquerade and it's a small intimate venue and Mayer Hawthorne did not disappoint! That dude rocks and he's totally underrated
The VIP Package was great, my first vip experience to a concert was awesome. Asking him questions, taking pics and get a chance to purchase merchandise before the general public. It was worth the money and the experience will forever be in my memory. I hope he comes back on another tour.
Great show-disappointed in fact we bought VIP meet and greet were told to arrive at 7, it was already over
It was great to be part of the meet and greet. Mayer put on a great show and would go see him again!
Absolutely loved the grooves! India Shawn was an amazing opener and Mayer's trio of ladies playing background made for one heck of a funky night! I missed the bass player's name...she was excellent!
Mayer is a very talented dude and an excellent showman. Going in, I was only family with a few of his songs, but it didn't matter. He's the type of artist that if I had never heard ANY of his music, I would have still enjoyed the show.
I’ve been waiting a very long time to see Mayer Hawthorne in concert and it was truly worth the wait!!! It was an amazing experience and the song selection was excellent!
smooth entry into venue, plenty of people to ask questions, inside of venue is very cool with the connection to West Coast tavern very convenient for more bar space to purchase cocktails. In the VIP area did not care for the seating area as you could not really get a good look at the stage because the barriers were too high. We ended up standing on the wing (which was very nice). The sound system overall left a bit to be desired, not very crisp and clear. Maybe add a cocktail menu (in VIP) so we aren't trying to figure out what to order and make people behind us wait longer than necessary. Love this place so much more than SOMA (which sucks). I noticed chairs behind the GA section, but didn't see them on the ticket options. Look forward to many more events at Observatory
Everything about this concert got me extra Hyped like I knew it would! Mayer - teamed up with Motown's flavor, that kick ass Live Band he strolled in with, and having enough floor space for me to cypher and bust out some Hip Hop moves was a definite treat. Highly recommended! Was my first time seeing this man in concert, but it certainly will not be the last!
We love listening to Mayer Hawthorne playing throughout our home and we were anxiously anticipating his concert. It far surpassed expectations and we hope to see him live again soon.
Mayer greeted everyone with excitement, enthusiasm, and FUNK! His opening really got everyone moving...and, his persona and musicianship kept everything on a HIGH note the rest of the night...He is an amazing performer who likes to keep it fresh. Some of his songs showed that he doesn't want to just repeat the CD's music in exactly the same way...and, that's a good thing...it allowed for his excellent all girl band to show off their talents and they were massive. Looking forward to seeing him again...oh, and he did tease with a little Tuxedo during the set...all in all, a great talent, who deserves wide recognition...go see him.
Listened to him for years, finally seen him live last night, rocked an all girl cast on stage with him. Great show, great songs, and would see him again. The only down side had to do with seeing him at the Observatory.. the sound there is kinda made for hip hop shows. Will try and catch him again at a bigger, better venue.
The Fillmore was easy to get to, clean, and even being in the balcony, the view was great! It's intimate, but not closed in. The sound was good, and the staff was friendly.
I cannot stress enough how much fun Mayer makes a night with his endless charisma and breathtaking talent. Everyone at the Venue was a die hard fan and if they weren't I am sure they were made into one! That being said the night was dampened by how rude some of the higher staff at the venue were. The opener was talented in his own right but I personally felt he lacked the power to pump up any audience. Finally I experienced going through hell and back over getting cheated out of a better experience which greatly upset me. Had staff taken better steps I would feel differently about the whole event.
Great show, lots of fun. Mayer Hawthorne is an amazingly talented performer.
