About

Matoma In Concert

Matoma's Tom Stræte Lagergren was born in 1991 in Åsnes, Norway — hardly a major musical metropolis. But that hasn't stopped the electronic producer from developing one of the worldliest sounds in contemporary EDM: a sleek mixture of tropical house and radio-ready pop, with a considerable amount of hip-hop and dancehall mixed in.

What stands out most in Matoma's music is its melodic dimension — a direct result of the eight years he spent studying classical piano. In his childhood, he listened to rock and classic hip-hop; he began producing electronic music in his teens, having discovered trance artists like Tiësto and Armin van Buuren through his older brother.

Like a lot of fledgling producers, he got his start uploading remixes to SoundCloud; but unlike most, he racked up millions of plays within his first six months of posting. He notched his first major success in 2014 with "Old Thing Back," a slinky club remix of The Notorious B.I.G.'s 2007 song "Want That Old Thing Back" featuring Ja Rule and Ralph Tresvant. After going to No. 1 on Hype Machine, Matoma's breezy, sax-slicked rework ended up getting an official release in 2015.

From there, things really kicked off for Matoma. His list of collaborators quickly swelled to include Popcaan, Wale, Akon, Nico & Vinz, and Sean Paul. In 2016, he remixed Dua Lipa's "Hotter Than Hell" and landed the feel-good single "Wonderful Life (Mi Oh My)" on the soundtrack for The Angry Birds Movie

Following collaborations with Snoop Dogg, MAGIC!, and The Vamps — including the hugely popular "All Night," a new career milestone — Matoma pushed his sound in even more directions in 2018. He flirted with Latin rhythms on "I Don't Dance (Without You)" featuring Enrique Iglesias, explored delicate acoustic textures on "Losing It Over You" featuring Ayme, and even delivered slow-mo dembow with the Spanish-language "Telepatía" featuring Luis Figueroa.

Through it all, Matoma has kept his signature chilled-out vibe — in keeping with the Lion King reference "Hakuna Matata," which served as the inspiration for his name. The meaning of the phrase? "No worries," of course.

    Meh. Could have been better.

by Lydia on 11/2/21Talking Stick Resort - Scottsdale

D.J. Matoma didn't come on until midnight, so for some of us Gen Xers, that is a little late, and given I had planned to leave the party at the witching hour, I did not hear much of his stuff. D.J. Gattuso whom I heard most of the night played fairly repetitive and boring remixes and didn't do a great job of engaging the crowd. It wasn't want for trying, however no amount physical gesturing and occasionally slicking back of the hair can make up for lackluster dee-jaying. As soon as a recognizable song came on, he stopped it and introduced the same mind-numbing, thumping beat heard in the previous song, and the song previous to that. I actually think the opening D.J. (not sure who he was) was better than Gattuso. Kudos to that guy. The other thing I wasn't too impressed by was the decor/ambience. It didn't look very festive in that ginormous ballroom that was filled mainly with platforms, stereo speakers and equipment. The elevated VIP section looked like a corral. I'm glad I didn't pay the extra $40. Many of those folks ended up "jumping the fence" and joining the rest of us GA peeps. The acrobats on the rings were cool, but they felt like an afterthought. I'm probably being way too critical, but that's just how I saw it. The place was not packed when I left around 12:15. Maybe that was a good thing given the current environment. My friends and I had fun despite everything I just shared in this review, so the event gets 3 stars.

    Terrible

by Darlene on 11/2/21Talking Stick Resort - Scottsdale

Why, and a Halloween party, river lights up high and bright? Why was one continuous, same beat, techno music played for hours straight? No hip hop, pop, or top 40?

    Overall Pretty Fun!

by Ash on 11/2/21Talking Stick Resort - Scottsdale

I got tickets because my friend asked me to go. I really had no idea what I was walking in to. It was pretty cool, I enjoyed the DJ who was outside the most.

    Crappy event

by Mike on 11/2/21Talking Stick Resort - Scottsdale

The Dj was horrible, no one was dancing but he wouldn’t change his music. A room of 30-40-50 somethings and he plays techno that no one was dancing to. A waste of money to go

The worst judging contest possible They did not allow the actual people at the party to cast a vote.

    This party was rockin

by Oberjique on 1/23/20House of Blues Houston presented by Cricket Wireless - Houston

Matoma and Two Friends were an excellent show. I have to say we were upgraded to VIP because the balcony where we purchased our seats was closed, but overall the show was great. The crowd was great, and a great time was had by all! Can't wait to see my next show here.

Love tropical house so naturally Matoma and Kygo are among my favorite producers, and I'm glad to finally see him live. Great show, 2.5 hour set of all his originals, remixes, and live mashups of all the hits - everyone was vibing and great general atmosphere. Really friendly guy too, came out to the stage after to quickly greet all the fans.
