About

Since first emerging on the international stage in 2005, Matisyahu has established a reputation for following his muse—from the stripped-down roots reggae of the gold-certified Live at Stubb’s to the trippy ministrations of Youth to the polished pop eclecticism of Light. Then, in 2010, he returned to the venerable Austin venue that introduced him for Live at Stubb’s II, demonstrating that all those travels had somehow only strengthened his connection to his musical bedrock. It was a whirlwind half-decade journey, one that earned Matisyahu a place in pop culture at large.

And it was only the beginning.

Now based with his family in Los Angeles, Matisyahu blasts off yet again with Spark Seeker, a bold new studio album that finds the one-of-a-kind vocalist and songwriter exploring uncharted territory with help from an expansive cast of collaborators. “My musical tastes are all over the board,” he says in reference to a record that mixes ancient traditional sounds with futuristic electro beats, rapping with singing, songs of the spirit with songs of the body. “And, besides, my music has never been about the outer garment. It’s about searching out inspiration wherever it lies. This album is about seeking that spark within.”

Outer garments, of course, long defined Matisyahu in the eyes of many. “I was the Hasidic reggae superstar,” he says with a knowing laugh. So when Matisyahu took to Twitter in late 2011 to post a picture of himself with his new look, he did it with a certain amount of relief. “It just felt good to sort of restart everything,” he says, adding that the transformation actualized one of the central themes of Spark Seeker: the impermanence of the physical form. “The spark seeker digs for truth and meaning and is willing to let go of everything to find it. He’s honest and authentic with himself and lives life from the inside out. He creates music from the depths and doesn’t worry about what category it or he fits into.”

“We live in a world where people tend to think in extremes and categorize with ultimate statements,” Matisyahu says. “While it’s true that at one point it would’ve been pretty accurate to describe me as Hasidic reggae, for most of my career my music has been a blend, a mixture.”

For Spark Seeker—not just a collection of random tracks, but a complete piece of work made with one producer—Matisyahu spent a year recording with Koool Kojak (Nicki Minaj, Travis Barker, Ke$ha) at the latter’s home studio in L.A. Then the pair went to Israel with an open slate. “We booked a studio there and invited various friends and musicians—including Zohar Fresco, Daniel Zamir, Ravid Kahalani and rapper Shyne—to come and simply play music,” Matisyahu says. “We began to blend all of this live instrumentation to create a unique record, made by multi-faceted human beings who have many sides and many sources of inspiration.”

The result reflects that wide array of voices and experiences. In the hard-hitting “Live Like A Warrior” Matisyahu describes feelings of frustration and desperation, while lead single “Sunshine” rides what might be the most uplifting groove in his catalog; elsewhere, “Searchin’” pairs a gritty digital-dancehall beat with chanted lyrics and “I Believe in Love” exemplifies the album’s deep melodic streak. Throughout Spark Seeker you can hear Matisyahu embodying the album’s title—and embracing its humble promise. The album has a depth to it as well as a lightness, which alludes to the most essential theme of the record--that everything in life, especially music, exists in mixtures and blends.  “Things are not as black and white as we would like to think.  Not everything can be oversimplified," says Matisyahu.

“This is definitely pushing the boundaries of what I’ve done before,” he acknowledges. “It’s a new kind of record for me.” At this point we’d expect nothing less.

    Matisyahu's Incredible Performance

by Kapuder on 7/9/09The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

Please read the full review before making judgement. The show opened with Umphrey's McGee around 8:00 and they performed for almost two hours. If your a fan of UM you probably would have enjoyed it, otherwise you may have stood through the longest continual finale after finale every witnessed. Although super talented from a musical perspective, the band is super repetitive in their sound and every sound sounded like the previous. After the first 45 minutes we began checking the time on our phones, wondering how long they could go on. 2 hours later we were still doing that! Now onto the most amazing performance ever. Matis came out around 10:20 and opened with Youth and the Electric Factory began rocking and didn't stop for another 2 and half hours. This was my 3rd Matis show so I knew what I was in for, but wow what a show. The show was complete with everything from old to new, even featuring several songs from "Life", his new album due out in August. He had an 8+ minute beat box, 2 guest freestylers, band member solos, crazy house rocking bass beats, full band stage dives and everything you could imagine and want. His songs were stellar with Jerusalem as my personal favorite only rivaled by the encore of "One Day". An unbelievable show and night and well worth the $28 tickets! (front row also helped) I would highly recommend you see Matisyahu if you haven't yet, you'll be in for a superb show.

    Umphrey's=rock titans Matisyahu=meh

by Lemonjello on 7/9/09The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

Umphrey's McGee, as always, had the crowd eating out of their hands for their entire set. Simply put, they know how to entertain. They can captivate a crowd with their ingenuous solos; but more importantly, they can slow the song down long enough for you to catch your breath and let anticipation build before their next roller-coaster ride audio-visual CLIMAX. Matisyahu started strong, and seeing as I was not a fan before the show I was judging him harshly. I was liking the kosher vibes my ears were being fed. After an hour of smooth raggae hip-hop fusion he brought out a couple of "special guests" and I, along with many others, got bored. I can't say I know how it ended, because even though the bass line was shaking the earth, the energy left the stage along with the cast of Umphrey's McGee.

What was umphrey's doing with Matisyahu?

by bigumphphan on 7/9/09The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

Umphrey's got up and dominated for about an hour forty-five. Then a fifty minute set-break and the joker Matisyahu came on and was terrible. I left after about 20 minutes.

    Jam Band Central

by BC311Rower on 7/9/09The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

Umphrey's was an above average jam band that played way too long. I think Matiyahu has been hanging with Umphrey's too much. I like bands that throw some cool stuff at you at concerts but this was too much of a good thing. I thought the show could have been tightened up a bit, more thriller and less filler. The entertainment value was not there to hold my attention, and the others that left.

    Matisyahu rocked the house

by Gershon on 7/9/09First Avenue - Minneapolis

This was the third Matisyahu show I have seen in Minnesota. The first one was at Roy Wilkins, the second at the Zoo and the last one at First Ave. The Zoo being outside was spectacular, a jaw dropping and mind blowing musical and lyrical extravaganza.

    Matisyahu is losing his religion

by KatieKate on 7/6/09First Avenue - Minneapolis

It has been 2 years since the last time I saw Matis in concert and I was completely shocked to see him come onto set in a hoodie and track pants. Very different than the last concert I saw of his when he was wearing a suit and hat. this concert he was dancing around and even crowd surfing. Apparently his religious views have loosened over the years. Even though that may be the case, he still rocked the concert and was as good as when I saw him before.

by abcdefg on 7/3/09First Avenue - Minneapolis

If you want to see an artist completely send his vibe to a crowd and electrify--go experience Matisyahu! He was on fire! And so were we! I've seen him before, but the First Ave experience was the best. The crowd was soooo cool! Loved it!

other concerts are forgettable after matiisyahu

by Sendek on 7/3/09First Avenue - Minneapolis

dubb trio opened up they really rocked it. i did not know what to expect from this band. but when they started I think they made people like metal reggae a lot. matis took the stage and it ended up being a great experience. the man is so talented with his flow's and rhymes that fumigate the room with a sense of astonishment. he would put the wonderful rhymes into his actual songs, that when played got the whole room moving there body's, and as the room pulsed matis would start dancing while singing and the energy in the room was electric.

    Boring, boring, boring!

by lowendslacker on 7/3/09First Avenue - Minneapolis

I attended the Matisyahu concert held at First Avenue along with a fellow musician. Both of us were amazed at how poorly the performance and set list were developed. There was no musical momentum and very little genuine emotional connection to the audience. Although Matisyahu was the featured performer, his voice was unclear, hidden behind excessive reverb and other effects. As I looked around the room I could see hundreds of equally bored audience members and noticed that many of them were leaving during the performance. At the end of the night I felt drained and utterly numbed by boredom. This show was a huge disappointment.

Terrific show. Matis had the crowd on his side from start to finish. One Love, the new song, is amazing and should propel him to greater notice.

    wow

by Brinquedo on 7/2/09First Avenue - Minneapolis

The house was packed toe to toe. And he rocked it. It was a very spiritual experience. Across the crowd you could see people with arms raised. I liken it to being at a revival. You could feel the positive energy in the air. If you get a chance to see see Matisyahu...go. He has strong presence.

    Alchemychef

by Alchemychef on 7/2/09First Avenue - Minneapolis

What an amazing show! The passion and talent of this young man (and band) was incredible. Matisyahu brings a message of peace and spirituality to his performance the is undeniably real and pure. The band was super tight, based around "The Dub Trio" whom also acted as the opening act held the bottom line strongly throughout the generous 3 plus hours they played while Matisyahu moved back and forth like a pacing lion to the beat. The only less than stellar moment was the First Avenue sound system. It needs a makeover, the bass line stomped all over it.

    A religious experience

by mills on 7/2/09First Avenue - Minneapolis

Listening to Matisyahu on a CD is an experience in it's own right, but seeing him live was something I will never forget. The energy he had on the stage was just incredible. Everyone in the audience could tell how much the music really meant to him, and he made everyone at the show feel his music just as if it were their own. The show only got better when he brought Yoni (the guy on beatbox from live at stubbs) up for a few songs. Their chemistry on stage was great, and both of them did stage dives! I was the third person in line so we were literally right next to the stage, and it was very powerful to have him be standing right over you preaching the word of peace. Everyone walked out of that concert a little different, changed in a positive way by the music of Matisyahu

The sound quality was great. He sounds even better live than I imagined.
