I don't know much about her music, but I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised. She's a talented musician and songwriter, with the ability to engage the audience easily.

by Mattsmith on 7/9/10Park West - ChicagoMCC, has not toured in 3 years. At Park West she arrived on stage alone and began with a sweet song from her new cd. Band members came in one at a time and joined her adding to her voice and guitar....the audience was overwhelmed to see her and hear her again! The first half of the show was a mixture of new and older songs from her vast recording history, the ballads were sublime and well matched by her band. The second half of the show she returned to some of her greatest hits with gusto and great enthusiasm. Her smile and joy at playing during the whole show was infectious! She had the audience with her all night. And the encore was just the kind of send off that had everyone on their feet singing along with her joy at performing again. I won't spoil the last song she did, it was a pleasant, redo of one of her classics- which just solidified in everyone that this is one very talented performer and writer, with a class A band to join in the fun.
Rating: 4 out of 5by Trader596 on 7/9/10Park West - Chicago The event was very nice as is the venue. Mary Chapin Carpenter has a wonderful stage presence and connects with the crowd. There are a lot of feelings and emotions in her words. I would recommend the venu and concert to anyone. Park West could sell some better wine though, has a lot to be desired. Cannot wait to go to my next event there.
Rating: 5 out of 5 Mary Chapin brought me to tears!
by PaulaRae on 7/9/10Minnesota Zoo Amphitheater - Apple ValleyYears of waiting to see MCC in concert finally came to an beautiful ending when my husband surprised me with a trip to see her in concert at the MN Zoo. The 7 hour trip was WELL worth it, as I listened through tears of joy and gratefulness for the opportunity to share in MCC's amazing music. The setting was lovely, the small weather delay was no bother, and there were no "bad seats" in the place. A very intimate show, I still wished I could have had a chance to meet her. I asked several people "just in case" someone would let me meet her, but to no avail. Perhaps I'll get that chance some day, but just to see her in concert was incredible enough!

by gogirl52 on 7/8/10Minnesota Zoo Amphitheater - Apple ValleyDespite the tree frogs, the bombadier duck, and the mosquitos as big as small birds, Mary CC has not lost her wonderful sense of humor and the lustrous beauty of her lyrical performance. I first saw her in Berkley somewhere around 1989 or maybe early 1990s. And her music was a backdrop to years of growing as a person and a woman. Her recent life challenges have only made her lyrics and songwriting that much more soulful. The outdoor acoustics nothwithstanding, her band was absolutely fabulous, as was she.

by MNphotog on 7/8/10Minnesota Zoo Amphitheater - Apple ValleyWe felt it was a lazy performance and left early. Best part was the frog croaking in the background, which was louder and more entertaining than the performance. The other excitement was the mama duck and her ducklings trying to get through the crowd. Seems the attention went from the concert to the ducks.
Rating: 5 out of 5by Anonymous on 7/8/10Minnesota Zoo Amphitheater - Apple Valley I've seen Mary Chapin Carpenter a few times over the years. This venue fit her very well. Beautiful location and a beautiful voice to match it. The mix of songs from her newest to her older ones was fun. She built the energy and momentum to a great finish, keeping the audience with her all the way.
Rating: 2 out of 5 Irritated duck
by Scotchieguy on 7/8/10Minnesota Zoo Amphitheater - Apple ValleyTo many ballads...not enough uptempo stuff. Very restrained...the band with the exception of the drummer phoned it in. She is a very talented but she needs to liven up the set list. The ticked off duck that swooped in was the most exciting thing that happened at the concert. The duck had it right...get me out of here. Enough of the Mosquito references gets old after the 3rd/4th time. I am not a Palin fan, but why the rambling set up for "The Calling" just to score a dumb low fruit Palin reference. I was enjoying her examples of people called to make a difference why the attempts to be a comedian.
Rating: 5 out of 5 Mary Chapin Carpenter, MN zoo
by crst on 7/8/10Minnesota Zoo Amphitheater - Apple ValleyThe 6-piece band was terrific and stacked with talent, she played a great mix of old and new. The vocals were amazing as they all participated vocally. For the most the overall mix was good, but I have a bone to pick with the main board sound tech. John Jennings has been MCC's guitarist and co-writer forever, so I was happy to see him there. However, the sound guy did not have his electric guitar mixed well at all, we basically had to hear his amp from the stage, very disappointed from that part.
Rating: 5 out of 5 Only in Minnesota!
by Songwriter on 7/8/10Minnesota Zoo Amphitheater - Apple ValleyLast night's concert was wonderful, of course! I'm just noting the unusual highlights here... MCC's first song was accompanied [oh so tenderly!] by an unidentified winged virtuoso from a nearby treetop. Round about the third number, a frog of some significant [yet unseen] girth joined in and pretty much kept the beat through the whole show... A momma Merganser lost track of her ducklings for a time and frantically flew over the audience several times looking for them until deciding to land in the pond behind the stage. Fortunately, zoo staff were on hand to bring the ducklings to her and we watched as MCC serenaded their evening swim before waddling off to bed... And, finally, unbeknownst to to our greatly talented guest [who was most gracious and welcoming to all for the entire evening], a bat swiftly and efficiently managed mosquito patrol - apparently having been alerted to Mary Chapin's commentary on Minnesota's "Chernobyl"-sized summer dive bombers...

by suell on 7/8/10Minnesota Zoo Amphitheater - Apple ValleyShe sang all of my favorites! I can't imagine a better event. I plan to buy her new CD as soon as I can. The concert venue was outstanding. Thank you for bringing her to the Zoo. She needed a better microphone. It was hard to hear her talking to the audience in row V.

Rating: 5 out of 5 Mary Chapin Carpenter was absolutely amazing!
by BelTuc on 7/8/10Minnesota Zoo Amphitheater - Apple ValleyProbably the best concert I have ever seen. It felt so personal and I felt like I got to know her a little bit with her stories about her songs, her wit, her ability to go with the flow (The concert was at an outdoor amphitheater at the Minnesota Zoo and a duck flew around the audience, birds sang loudly, toads croaked, etc.). Mary Chapin Carpenter has such an easygoing, laid back style that feels so welcoming and like she is really happy to be there with you. Her voice never cracked and was beautiful. Such a quaint venue...so much more intimate than an arena. I'd go see her anywhere!
Rating: 5 out of 5 Mary Chapin at her best
by Anonymous on 7/6/10The Concert Hall - New YorkPrior to this concert I last saw Mary Chapin Carpenter at Wolf Trap a few years ago. She was far away, yet it was a wonderful evening. The concert I saw at the Ethical Culture Center in New York far surpassed the last one due to the intimate venue and the fact that MCC is looking well and sounding great. The terrific combination of old and new songs combined with her old band and her engaging personality made for an excellent evening.

by singyoursong on 7/3/10Cape Cod Melody Tent - HyannisMary Chapin Carpenter and band put on a great show. She sang some of her best old songs like Passionate Kisses and Shut Up and Kiss Me. She was very talkable to the audience and the band showed some great instrumental segments. She still has a perfect voice voice.
Rating: 5 out of 5 Perfect Pitch for a summer evening
by Redrach on 7/3/10Cape Cod Melody Tent - HyannisIt was a pleasure to see Mary back on stage singing. It has been too long. Her voice is so pure, but the songwriting is what draws you in. Her music is poetry to the heart. Although the audiance seemed much older than I expected (reserved is a good word), the evening was fantastic. I loved hearing the new music and a blend of all her previous music, it was great. I could listen to her for hours. I hope that it is not as long between tours in the future, she has a voice for our feelings, when words do not come and some of us out here really need that. A beautiful summer evening on the Cape. Welcome back Mary Chapin Carpenter!

by AAWilson on 7/3/10Cape Cod Melody Tent - HyannisMCC and her band played a wonderful range of new and tender (ex. "Mrs. Hemingway") to classic and dance-worthy (ex. encore "Twist and Shout") tunes. Her voice was as inspiring as ever, and Matt Rollings on piano was unforgettable! We are so glad you are back, MCC!!!

by OliviaJane on 7/2/10Cape Cod Melody Tent - HyannisMary Chapin Carpenter is back as good as she was 20 years ago. A bit melancholy after all "life has interrupted" her with, but her power, voice, and enthusiasm were wonderful!! Her band is great with her as the leader. We really enjoyed the performance.
