This was a performance not to be missed! What a thrill also to enjoy such a wonderful photo exhibit reception and a pre-performance lecture before the show-- all for the price of admission!

Dance and pre-dance talk were wonderful!

by arabel on 2/10/14Clowes Memorial Hall - Indianapolis

The evening progressed from the very dramatic Clytemnestra through the happy and hopeful Appalachian Spring highlights to the humorous Maple Rag. Clytemnestra was full of rage, grief, plotting, murder, betrayal, black costumes, and a big red cloth. I'm glad they gave only the distillation (which lasts an hour) and not the full-length version (which lasts 2 or 3 hours). The supertitles helped the audience follow the plot. The music was discordant but that was appropriate for the subject matter. Martha's choreography dramatized the basic plot extremely well and the piece was well-paced. Appalachian Spring was entertaining. It consisted of the Artistic Director reading sections of letters from Martha to her composer, Aaron Copeland, interspersed with parts of the piece that carried out her instructions to him. It is a good-natured piece and enjoyable. The last number was Martha's last creation. She composed it to poke fun at herself, since she was known as "Mirthless Martha." I was glad to see she could compose comedy and enjoyed the antics of the dancers at the unusual barre. It might have been a little too long, though.

If you ever have an opportunity to see this fabulous dance company, go!! You will be so glad you did. The range of emotions the dancers take you through is all encompassing. The dancers themselves are pure professionals. What a delight to see such talent in person.

Parts were not the type of dancing i am used to but i enjoyed watching a new form. I LOVED several of the dances and others were just a little off the beaten path. :-)

    Graham is still cutting edge

by Symphonygoer on 3/7/11Des Moines Civic Center - Des Moines

The evening's ballets by Copland, Barber and Dello Joio were executed beautifully by the exquisite dancers of the company. So valuable to see what these classic American pieces of music were written for!

    Amazing dancers and real education

by Pantalons on 4/22/10University of Denver - Newman Center - Gates Concert Hall - Denver

The Martha Graham Co. dancers are a sight to behold. You watch them jumping and it seems effortless--yet when you reflect on the movement or attempt a facsimile of your own you realize the power and discipline these dancers are capable of. The show itself was most informative, and several of the dances were inspirational. It was truly educational to see the roots of so much movement that still lives today in the modern idiom. I would have enjoyed even a little more of the historical dances.

    Martha Graham was classic

by Beangrl on 4/21/10University of Denver - Newman Center - Gates Concert Hall - Denver

Was a fun approach, sort of a narrated retrospective of Graham's career with some film, some commentary from Graham herself, and some very cool dances. I have to admit that El Penitente was rather over my head, not being a Christian. Lamentation and the variations were revelatory.

The Martha Graham Dance program was quite enjoyable. The narration was informative and well-spoken, the film clips were wonderful to see, and the current present-day dancers were lovely to watch. This was a very interesting evening of dance, very informative and a joy to glimpse the life of Martha Graham through a historical perspective.

    Martha Graham was inspiring!

by biohazrad on 2/19/10Hershey Theatre - Hershey

I have previously only seen the Martha Graham Dance company on TV. It was amazing to see this level of talent in person. This tour basically honors Martha Graham, loosely following her history. She is indeed a very important part of America's history and cultural identity. I would recommend this to anyone. I will probably be buying or renting DVDs of the company's performances.

    Outstanding Talent!

by MJCS on 10/28/09Gaillard Auditorium - Charleston

This was undoubtedly the most creative dance company that I have seen in the last ten years! Hats off to the Charleston Concert Association for bringing this talented, disciplined company to the Charleston area. It has been years since I have seen any of Martha Graham's works, so it was thrilling to again experience the innovative comtemporary choreography for which she is known. My hope had been that the Company's repertoire would have included excerpts from Appalachian Spring, but every offering was exciting and beautifully performed.
