Brought out the satirical humor of Mark Twain. Hilarious and pointed out universal truths

  • Amazing Event in Subpar Venue

The fact that I forgot it was Hal Holbrook, and not Mark Twain, standing on stage chewing his cigar is probably a sufficient review for anyone who loves Mr. Twain's writings. Holbrook kept the material fresh, and the content was so timely anyone unfamiliar with Twain would have thought it was written by a modern writer speaking about today's congress, Wall Street, and partison press. My one complaint: The Toyota Center's Windermere Theatre was more cramped than a United flight, with literally one inch between the already too narrow seats, no arm rests, and (in spite of the insulated tiles covering the floor) obviously on top of an ice rink. Would I see Holbrook do it again? Absolutely. Would I ever attend an event at the Toyota Center again? Nope.

Have seen pieces of the performance in the past on PBS. When I saw that it was showing here I decided that it would an excellent opportunity to see the entire show. I enjoyed the show very much and seeing how different each performance can be I would be glad to go again.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed this show. We are amazed at Mr. Holbroke's talent and mastery of Twain. The Windemere Theatre is such a nice setting compared to the last musical I saw at the Toyota Center.

  • Mark Twain Tongiht

    by Diverguy1958 on 1/30/10Toyota Center Kennewick - KennewickRating: 5 out of 5

This was a dream come true to see Mr. Holbrook as Mark Twain. He has almost become Mark Twain and you tend to forget that Twain has been long gone. The caustic wit of Twain is timeless and the remarks are as fitting today as they were at the turn of the last century. Be prepare to laugh a lot, chuckle some, wipe a tear and feel slightly like you got caught pulling the kitty's tail. This was a night I will remember the rest of my life. Thanks Mr. Holbrook!!

"Mark Twain Tonight" ~ moving, thought-provoking, funny & sad. The words of Mark Twain in 1905 describe the corrupting power of the "all mighty dollar", corporations, insurance companies, wall street & particularly congress. The irony is even though it was written 100+ years ago, nothing has changed. If I didn't know better, I would have thought it was written about today's world events. That really struck me ... hard. Hal Holbrook is Mark Twain. I loved the little grunts when he walked & moved. Perhaps these are part of the act, perhaps not. This is acting at its finest. If Mark Twain comes to your city, do yourself the favor of getting a seat. My only regret was that I was in the nosebleed section and if I could go again, I would have sat in the first 3 rows regardless of the cost.

  • Hal Holbrook as Twain revisited

by AnnWil on 1/18/10Progress Energy Center's Mahaffey Theater - St PetersburgRating: 5 out of 5

This evening was a much anticipated thrill for me. The last time that I saw Holbrook as Twain was as a student at Western Michigan University in 1964,65 or 66. He needed make-up and I didn't, now that is reversed. Twain is Twain and with 40 or 50 years experience Holbrook does him well. I brought 3 friends with me and they really enjoyed the performance.

  • Hal Holbrooke IS Mark Twain

by Twainphile on 1/18/10Progress Energy Center's Mahaffey Theater - St PetersburgRating: 5 out of 5

SUPERB as always! Mr. Holbrook's performance nails the crusty but hilarious observations of Mark Twain in his later years. He rolls easily from the serious to the frivolious. What a breath of fresh air in today's world of sad reality and course fare that tries but fails to pass as serious entertainment.

  • Too Good at sounding like an old man.

by Judy0017 on 1/18/10Progress Energy Center's Mahaffey Theater - St PetersburgRating: 1 out of 5

Hal Holbrook did a wonderful job at taking us back in time and easily letting us slip into believing that Mark Twain was on stage and we were listening to his entertaining stories. What was difficult was understanding the words, because he was too good at depicting how Mark Twain would have told those stories. Speaking as a very old man, he slurred some words and spoke as if old dentures affected his speech, throughout the show. After the break, Mr Holbrook's came back, speaking clearly having dropped much of the "Mark Twain Speak" and was very easy to understand, but shortly thereafter, he slipped right back into the indiscernible speech.

  • Holbrook does a magnificent job

My wife and I were thoroughly entranced by Hal Holbrook's performance as Mark Twain. His rendition of Twain's commentaries on government and society were performed as though Twain were on the stage. Excellent.

Saw Hal Holbrook in "Mark Twain Tonight" last night. Awesome to say the least. Mark Twain is, by far, my favorite American author and Mr.Holbrook convinced me real life ghosts exist. Pay any price to see his performance.

Truly amazing. I felt like I was watching Mark Twain in person. Hal Holbrook presented a stellar performance. It was my first time seeing him, but my husband's third and still a thrill for a Mark Twain devotee. Thank you Mr. Holbrook for a your insightful portrayal of the infamous Twain.

  • Mark Twain Tonight

by Sciliana on 1/17/10Progress Energy Center's Mahaffey Theater - St PetersburgRating: 4 out of 5

Hal Hobrook is still great as Mark Twain. The material used in the show is so relevant to today that it is difficult to believe Clements was writing and talking about these national and world issues in the early 1900's. The problems faced in the last century are still present and a force to be reckoned with in American life today. The performance makes one realize that Samuel Clements was an amazing man who was at once part of his century and at the same time ahead of it. In the performance, Holbrook brings Clements to life for all to enjoy and respect. Caveat: This performance is not recommended by me for individuals who are hearing impaired unless they have good hearing devices and are up close to the stage in the orchestra area.. One of our party could not fully enjoy the performance because of heaing problems. The theater was unable to provide hearing devises on the evening we attended so check before depending that such equipment will be available at the time of attendance.

  • Poor sound system for a one man show

by john1449 on 1/17/10Progress Energy Center's Mahaffey Theater - St PetersburgRating: 1 out of 5

We were very disappointed in the performance. Both my wife and I had a difficult time hearing or understanding Mr. Holbrook. At intermission, when we left the theatre, others were complaining about the same thing. Some of which left at intermission also. It seems so odd that for a 'one man show' when the only form of entertainment is the spoken word, no one seemed to pay attention to the sound problem?

  • awsome twain

This was typical Twain. A man of great humor and Mr. Holrook , who played him beautifully, had us in stiches . I had a great time and would recommend this show to my friends.

  • Timely & Terrific

For two hours I sat mesmerized as Holbrook spun literary magic. What strikes you about his performance is two-fold: 1. Hal Holbrook is Mark Twain... literally. He has lived with the character for so long, and has grown into it so well, he transformed in front of you. As a spe ctator you never once feel you are at a Holbrook performance.; 2. Mark Twain's material is as relevent to today as it was in the previous century. Congress, Wall Street, journalism, liquor, the Church... even the French are as in the news now as they were then. It is as though Twain had the power to look into our future at write about it then. History does, indeed, repeat itself. The only thing I could lament about the show was the audience... not one couple as young as my wife and me... We are in our mid-thirties. Don't miss the performance, whatever your age!
