Excellent monologue. Mr. Holbrook captured the true essence of Twain's character.

Do not miss Hal Holbrook as he continues to bring the very applicable wit and wisdom of Mark Twain to today's audience. These times cry-out for such a voice.

Hal Holbrook is Samual Clements! I'm so glad he came back to San Antonio.

I found the presentation very interesting but honestly Hal is A LITTLE PAST PRIME. I say him on TV years ago and this did not measure up to that. It was good but a new actor is time.

  • Hall Holbrook as Mark Twain

The fifteen friends that went could not understand 65% of what was said by the actor. It was a awful experience and a waste of money for all of us. The enunciation and acoustics were awful

  • First half is great!!! Second half, distressing.

by LesliefromLouisiana on 10/24/11Baton Rouge River Center - Baton RougeRating: 4 out of 5

Holbrook's Mark Twain is masterful and very definitely worth seeing. The first half is thoroughly enjoyable --- with Twain’s rapier wit and Holbrook’s impeccable delivery --- at times riling the audience with various pointed comments about politics, religion and man’s foibles, but always highly professional and adroit. Delightful! But “cave emptor” --- the stentorian second half is a total departure from the cleverness of the first. It’s a theatrical descent into the drunken ravings of Huck’s abusive father and the thickly accented mumblings of Huckleberry Finn, all presented with great drama and even greater volume. Aisle seats --- especially those nearest an exit --- are strongly advised.

  • Hal Holbrook IS Mark Twain

by BigSchexy on 10/24/11Baton Rouge River Center Theater - Baton RougeRating: 4 out of 5

Holbrook channeled Twain's spirit and delivered a performance worthy of the master himself. Although he slipped a bit at one point and repeated himself, I felt the show had a "non-polished" feel to it that gave it a realism of a town hall meeting. Once again, I am disappointed with the River Center's sound. This is the second event in a row that the sound was less than expected (1st - Brian Regan show). I'm more inclined to travel further to see shows in New Orleans where the sound is better than to see them here. That is disappointing to me.

  • Hal Holbrook was impressive

Sometimes slow, but an amazing performance. Would highly recommend.

  • Hal Holbrook at River Center was disappointing

by Linda70123 on 10/23/11Baton Rouge River Center Theater - Baton RougeRating: 2 out of 5

I was so excited to see Hal Holbrook in MARK TWAIN TONIGHT! The simple set, lighting, and costuming were awesome. However something was lacking in the sound. I could not hear much of what Mr. Holbrook said. His voice seemed to drop off during "punch lines" and when his head was lowered. Some words sounded garbled. Not hearing so much of the monologue definitely detracted from my enjoyment of such an otherwise wonderful production. Nonetheless, I am thrilled to have witnessed this live performance by a great performer.

  • A tremendous disappointment

by MarkTT3 on 10/23/11Baton Rouge River Center Theater - Baton RougeRating: 1 out of 5

I have been a fan of Hal Holbrook for years and consider him to be a fine actor. I respect him as a professioal and hold him in high esteem. His October 21, 2011 performance in Baton Rouge, however, was a tremendous disappointment. While the first 30 minutes were fine, Mr. Holbrook's articulation and voice projection were marginal during much of his show. His segment recounting Tom Sawyer was largely incomprehensible. There was even a point that was so bad I would have walked out had I been able to do so discreetly. I am so sorry to see his performance deteriorate to this level, and l wish him the very best. I believe, however, he should restrict his preformance to smaller audiences.

Hal Holbrook is a fantastic actor and this material is full of possibilities. It was a wonderful show! One problem as had was hearing some of the dialogue especially when he was speaking very loud. I was in the front of the mezzanine so I would have hoped that the acoustics would have carried that far. On a separate subject, I have been away from the Baton Rouge area for the past three years and have just returned. I had spent 27 years in this area before moving away and attended many events at this theater. I was saddened to see the state of theatre when I attended-ceiling tiles broken or nonexistent, water fountain not functioning, and other types of repair/upkeep needs. This community deserves better than that! I don't know who is responsible for making that part of a budget but I would love to see that happen!

Had a very difficult time understanding him. Don't know of it was the sound system or his accent & inflections, buttered about a third is the dialogue.

  • Mark Twain - LIVE!

    by Starman1 on 10/21/11Pensacola Saenger Theatre - PensacolaRating: 4 out of 5

This was the 3rd time I've seen Mr Holbrook perform as Mark Twain. He does a superb job and I don't doubt that he has captured his essence. While I do believe the current political issues drove him to select the topics he chose, I did find it interesting that the issues of the early 20th century have returned and are being duplicated in the beginning of the 21st century. The more things change, the more they stay the same. I hope Mr Holbrook is able to perform a return engagement next year, I'll be glad to see his performance again.

  • Excellent Performance

  • Mark Twain is as timely today as he ever was!

by Isistwou on 10/18/11Pensacola Saenger Theatre - PensacolaRating: 3 out of 5

Hal Holbrook was brilliant in his command of the Saenger stage last Saturday night. The words of Mark Twain, who was one of the wisest, most humorous of people in the history of American letters, ring as true today as they did between the years of Haley's Comet. Some people in the audience were unaware Holbrook was quoting Mark Twain verbatim and some chatter broke out Holbrook's comments were too political. This lack of understanding of Mark Twain's trenchant wit and universally brilliant political commentary. Some people did not respect the evening was a theatrical production and thought the dramatic pauses were Holbrook going up on a line and instead of being quiet and experiencing the moment, actually shouted out, "We love you, Hal." So small town.

  • Mark Twain Tonight was a disappointment!

by Memark on 10/18/11Pensacola Saenger Theatre - PensacolaRating: 1 out of 5

The program had too many political "talks" in it. Was hoping for the humor of Mark Twain but instead got political bashing - which seemed to be referencing today's politics. Wanted to hear about Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn, how/why they were written but didn't get any of that. You ask for a photo below, but we were not allowed to take any pictures or videos.

  • Hal Holbrook in Mark Twain Tonight

An excellent performance, with real depth. The dialog in Huck Finn was a little hard to follow and I don't know if it was mic placement or enunciation. Over all a four star one man production.

  • Hal Holbrook is awesome!

As Mark Twain, Mr. Holbrook came on to the stage and expressed his opinions as if we were all sitting in his living room. His use of the English language was so expressive and original and his humor so delightful that the program was over much too soon. I
