One has to love Mark Morris. For a dance troupe steeped in classical form and heir to the Duncan, Graham, Balanchine mantle,it brings a reality to its creations that embraces the audience to a greater extent than most of the traditional companies.
The dancers are real people of various body types, facial expressions and movements...not "forest nymphs". As such, they draw us into the drama (or comedy).. There is real love and enthusiasm in what they do that is contagious. The costumes ,lighting and especially the musical accompaniment work perfectly together.
The presentations run from modern free-form, to stylistic jazz to a classically inspired rush that suggests a Wedgwood vase come to life.
By the time the evening ends, we care about these people who have shown us enough of their souls that we feel that we know them.
Come back! We want to have this dream again.
