About

Margo Price has something to say but nothing to prove. In just three remarkable solo albums, the singer and songwriter has cemented herself as a force in American music and a generational talent. A deserving critical darling, she has never shied away from the sounds that move her, the pain that's shaped her, or the topics that tick her off, like music industry double standards, the gender wage gap, or the plight of the American farmer. (In 2021, she even joined the board of Farm Aid.)

Now, on her fourth full-length Strays, a clear-eyed mission statement delivered in blistering rock and roll, she's taking on substance abuse, self-image, abortion rights, and orgasms. Musically extravagant but lyrically laser focused, the 10-song record tears into a broken world desperate for remedy. And who better to tell it? Price has done plenty of her own rebuilding--or as she shout sings in explanation on "Been to the Mountain," the set's throat-ripping opener, "I have to the mountain and back alright"--and finds herself, at long last, free. Feral. Stray.

Moving from the sparse folk of her 2016 debut, Midwest Farmer's Daughter, into the rollicking roots of its follow up, All American Made, the following year, and, in 2020, into classic rock with Rumors, Price has established herself as a sonic explorer of the finest ilk. Still, she says, "This could be too out-there for people. But I just have this morality where I feel like, m."

And this does sound different. Louder, lusher. More layered. Price and her band recorded the set across a blissful week in Topanga Canyon, California, at producer Jonathan Wilson's Fivestar Studio in the summer of 2021. (A smaller second batch would get tracked in Music City, months later.) Wilson, who has helmed sets from Angel Olsen, Father John Misty, and Dawes in recent years, created a space for Price and her band--a longtime troupe that's been honing their kinetic, even raucous, live show since before Midwest Farmer's Daughter--to traverse new sounds and influences confidently.

Album opener "Been To The Mountain" showcases her "hard-living swagger" (The New York Times), while the Mike Campbell-assisted "Light Me Up" lays down a searing, explicit epic. "Radio," a buoyant guitar track featuring Sharon Van Etten, embraces sunny pop melodies. While the dobro- and pedal steel-laden "Hell in the Heartland," which Price penned in the immediate, uneasy aftermath of quitting drinking, builds towards a cacophony of distorted vocals and synthesizers.

Rock and roll, psychedelic country, rhythm & blues, and even bright shiny pop, they're all there on Strays, but as each refract through her artistry, that delicate vocal and unhurried delivery, they come out sounding singularly her. While the last few years have seen remarkable moments of acclaim--a Best New Artist Grammy nomination, Americana Music Honors, a Saturday Night Live performance, and just about every outlet and critics' year-end Best Of list--Price is still hungry. "I still have a lot of drive inside of me," she says. "I have a chip on my shoulder. It feels like I still haven't been able to fully realize all my dreams yet, and that eats me up." Just wait.

    Burning down the house

by MarkYMark on 2/13/23The Fillmore - San Francisco

Great venue. Great show. From the very 1st song, Margo and her band dropped the hammer for 90 straight minutes. No gimmicks, no pandering....just a blistering set that left everyone agape and in awe.

One of the Top 5 Shows I've Seen

by Troy Flint on 2/13/23The Fillmore - San Francisco

Fantastic musicianship, stage presence, and setting combined to make the Margo Price show at the Fillmore SF one of my top 5 concerts of all-time. The band is super tight and many of the live renditions of the songs were even better than the recorded versions -- a rare treat. Margo is a dynamo and amazing, killing it on guitar, drums, and even the occassional cowbell. Highest recommendation!

Margot has an awesome stage presence! This was hands down one of the best shows I have been to in a while. I want to see her every time she is in town now!!! It was my first time at the Fillmore, and I loved the venue. So rich with history and memories of past shows. I definitely will go to more shows there in the future.

by Esteef13 on 2/13/23The Fillmore - San Francisco

All I can say is she and her band are better than Ever ! Don’t sell yourself short if you’re a real fan of artist who are true to their craft. Real music and songwriting and performance and not plastic garbage. Go to a show and I promise you’ll go to more shows of hers. Invest in your concert experience.

Ethereal Voice & One Helluva Performance

by Macadamia Nut on 12/6/22Music Farm - Charleston

Margo pulled out all the stops with her band, wardrobe and performance. She had her sister at the merch table and they look just alike. I'll be going to see her again in a couple months.

MARGO at the RYMAN-the second show

    by Chad26 on 5/28/18Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

So I went to the 5/19 and was blown away, but this show if it could be possible and it was...she was even better. An almost completely different setlist and once again, all the stops to give the sold out crowd an amazing experience. I can't wait to see her again.

    MARGO at the RYMAN

    by Chad26 on 5/28/18Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

I have been a Margo fan for years and I have seen her three times prior to this show. When this was announced I couldn't pass up the chance to see her at such an iconic venue for Country music, so I made it a road trip. Well just as I suspected Margo put one a great show. She looked fabulous and her and her band have such good chemistry. The setlist was great and really showed her catalog and talents. She had a few special guests which were just gravy. She never disappoints, if you can SEE HER!!!!!

    Lesson learned

by Vandyguy on 5/27/18Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

I've finally figured out the purpose of a live concert...at lease for some performers. I first heard Margo on NPR and loved her voice and lyrics. Bought tickets to this Ryman concert in great anticipation of a great evening. Except for two songs with Emmylou Harris, which was a rare treat, the rest was way over produced with too much band...especially drums. Got it that it might have been where we were sitting and the fact that on one set Margo took to the drums herself producing an amazing drum riff with the band drummer, but I could understand few lyrics throughout the evening. We finally had enough about 10:30 and called it an evening. We're listening to a couple of her albums that confirms what I first thought of her voice and style, but clearly concerts are for those who already know all the words to her songs and can sing along regardless. Admittedly I'm way north in age of many of the fans, but I've learned my lesson well. We'll enjoy Margo from the comfort of our living room..unless she does a concert with three or less instrumentations and softens up the drummer alot.

    Margo! Margo! Margo!

My first time in the Ryman - a hallowed venue and worth the effort to reach (coming from London). Margo Price didn’t disappoint at all.

The best show I've seen this year

by tatschurchvan on 5/27/18Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

Went to see Margo and got more than I paid for. Not only was every song rocking, but the audience was into it once Colter Wall opened the night. Emmylou showed up and they performed Wild Women. Then Sturgill came back and they did some Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn along with a Waylon tune. Other highlights included Margo leading two face melting instrumental sessions on the drums. An unforgettable night at the Ryman.

    Margo hard rock

by Forevercounty on 5/26/18Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

I bought tickets for my wife and I in Nashville. I’ve never heard of Margo Price , but since we love County music I purchased two tickets. This isn’t County music, it was loud screaming into a mic! You couldn’t understand one word! She played the guitar, piano and drums , she’s very talented musician. He best two songs were when we were surprised to have Emmylou Harris join her on stage. If you love rock music go and see her.

Electrics too loud at the Ryman

by IMGrammyB on 5/26/18Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

It would have been a much better concert if the sound mixer would have greatly tones down the electric instruments in this small, historic venue. There was nothing in the building to absorb all of that sound and, as a result, we could not understand Margo Price as she sang. She has a beautiful, clear voice that I would truly have enjoyed hearing.

    What a talent!!

    by BMac1966 on 5/26/18Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

Some people are great singers, some great performers, Margo Price is both. Her energy and talent makes her concert rank up there as one of best I've seen. From playing almost every instrument on stage to singing with 2 amazing guest stars (Emmylou Harris and Sturgill Simpson) she is comfortable, confident and energetic. That adds up to one amazing must see show!

    by Jim2Joe on 5/23/18Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

Margo Price is a must see in concert! I attended her concert in Atlanta last year, but the Ryman performance was far and above that. A high energy, non-stop performance, highlighting her artistic talents, for almost 2 straight hours.
