About
Best known for producing innovative Christmas music albums, Mannheim Steamroller (the musical moniker for classically trained composer Chip Davis) has become one of the world's most influential and beloved instrumental acts. Of Mannheim Steamrollers' 36 million album sales, over 20 million of those sold have been Christmas albums--making Davis' music a holiday staple in many households worldwide. Davis started composing in a style he called "18th Century classical rock" in the mid '70s, recording the album Fresh Aire in 1975. The style--classical music played with electric bass and synthesizers--proved a little too novel for the mainstream market, so Davis created his own music label, American Gramaphone, and distributed his album to audio showrooms rather than record stores. His music became an instant hit with audiophiles (who frequented such showrooms) worldwide. Mainstream success finally came in the form of Mannheim Steamroller Christmas, Davis' first holiday album, which surprised the music industry by selling over 5 million copies. This groundbreaking hybrid sound of classical rock would ultimately be the precursor to the phenomenally successful new age music movement.

by Anonymous on 11/15/09Hershey Theatre - HersheyThis is the second time I have seen Manheim Streamroller at Christmas and as usual the really put on a beautiful Christmas concert. The only disappointment is that Chip Davis the creator was not touring with them due to a recent neck surgery.

by gottahavemusic on 11/15/09Hershey Theatre - HersheyThis is an excellent family concert especially for families whose children are learning or have learned to play an instrument. I have been a follower of this group for many years and was excited to finally see them in concert. I was NOT disappointed at all!
Rating: 3 out of 5 Mannheim was just OK.
by choke on 11/14/09Hershey Theatre - HersheyTo much pre-recorded stuff added to the live. However, great drummers. Still, the music is great. Limit the video to the back screen, except "Angels"

by Rancheroonie on 11/14/09Hershey Theatre - HersheyIt was great to finally get to see Mannheim Steamroller in concert! We were a bit dissapointed that Chip was not there, and also at the amount of recorded music that was used. BUT....the music was still GREAT! Also great was the Hershey Theatre - we loved it and plan to go back again.

by Anonymous on 11/14/09Hershey Theatre - HersheyI am always in awe when I see them play live. I have been listening to them for 24 years. It's the combination of instruments and the renaissance flavored music...wonderful!!!!!!!! A must see for anyone who has heard and liked their music. Even though Chip Davis was not at this concert, his presence could still be felt. He is truly a genius. Get well soon Chip!!! I want to see you performing next time. You are such a character.

by Sammyman on 11/14/09Hershey Theatre - HersheySaw Mannheim Steamroller in Hershey on Nov. 13 and was not impressed. It was a pretty good show, don't get me wrong, but $75.00 per ticket good.........nah, I don't think so. If you like Mannheim Steamroller, do yourself a favor and buy one of their CD's that you don't have and save the rest of the money you would have spent for tickets.........it's just not worth it.
Rating: 5 out of 5 Mannheim Steamroller fabulous as always
by MamaJo221 on 11/14/09Hershey Theatre - HersheyYou can't beat Mannheim Steamroller for a wonderful Christmas concert. They are always fun to watch, but their Christmas music is the best. They would be amazing just standing there and playing, but with the video and light show, you don't know what to watch first. Just hated to see it end.

Rating: 3 out of 5 Christmas Tour 2009
by PadreBear on 11/14/09Hershey Theatre - HersheyHonestly, a the intermission my wife and I commented that the show lacked the usual energy of a Steamroller performance. We were disappointed. The second half was better but not what we have come to love over the years. I do not know if it is because of the absence of Chip which was understandable with his surgery or the splitting of the usual core into East Coast/West Coast groups but we for the first time were left disappointed by a Mannheim Steamroller show. The music, however, is still some of our all time favorites Christmas fare as is everything else we own of Mannheim Steamroller which is pretty much everything recorded from Fresh Aire on.
Rating: 4 out of 5 Music was great but a little bit short
by CornwallPeople on 11/14/09Hershey Theatre - HersheyConcert was very enjoyable, musicians very talented and second half medieval festival video was interesting visual addition to the music. HOWEVER, thought the concert length was a bit short for the ticket prices. Recent concerts attended including The Who, Moody Blues, Celtic Woman and Great Big Sea all exceeded 2 hours of music playing time. This was our first Steamroller concert.

by CCUBE on 11/14/09Hershey Theatre - HersheyVERY GOOD BUT THEY NEEDED MORE SONGS DONE IN THE STEAMROLLER STYLE.
Rating: 2 out of 5 Expected More
by Anonymous on 11/14/09Hershey Theatre - HersheyThe musicians were very talented and the variety was pretty impressive, but they played mostly a very mellow selection, which was disappointing. I also did not care for their screen techinque (overlaying a video screen on the stage), as I really prefer to watch the musicians at their craft, and this was quite distracting/annoying. I've enjoyed Mannheim Steamroller since the late '80s, and this was my first show. I definitely would NOT go again. Transiberian Orchestra was much more impressive.
Rating: 5 out of 5by SBMMT on 11/14/09Hershey Theatre - Hershey The worst thing I can say about this concert is that it was not long enough for me. The music was, of course, what we were there to hear, but the video enhancements made the show more enjoyable. Like opening a Christmas card from a friend...
Rating: 5 out of 5 Mannheim Steamroller didn't fail to deliver
by DaveandDot on 11/14/09Hershey Theatre - HersheyIt's hard to imagine that they have been around for 25+ years! Often live events don't have the same 'sound' as their recorded material, but in this case, it's a very close second. What a wonderful venue to appear in, as well. The acoutics lent a benefit to the overall performance and the music, while loud, was not at an obnoxious level as some groups have done in the past. If you like Mannheim's music, this is a performance you really don't want to miss.
Rating: 3 out of 5 Manheim a little dated
by pasta1 on 11/14/09Hershey Theatre - HersheyOverall, I enjoyed the concert. The music was excellent. My issue was more with the special effects. With todays' technology, the effects that were used could have been used in 1999. I think they could take a step forward and employ something more. Also, went to see them last year and was disappointed that I believe it was the exact same concert. For the money, I would like to see something a little different. I realize they are not writing new music, but some change would be welcome. I would say that the venue of the Hershey Theatre is fabulous. There is not a bad seat in the house.
