M.I.A. IN CONCERT:

M.I.A. has led the way for women in hip-hop ever since her fearless lyrics and gutsy stagewear propelled her to fame in the early '00s. The Academy Award and Grammy Award-nominated rapper is known for pushing the boundaries with her live performances as she mixes jungle and world music with modern rap and electronica amid artistic stage designs. Whether she's performing game-changers like "Paper Planes" or spitting fan favorites like "Galang," the dynamic British artist will treat fans to her hit-filled sets on tour with A$AP Ferg and Elliphant in 2014.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam, M.I.A. got her start as a designer and filmmaker before deciding to pursue her music career full-time in 2002. Experimenting with beats in her bedroom, she released her 2005 debut Arular, which was inspired by her father and their experiences in her childhood home of Sri Lanka. The album was met with universal acclaim, landing her on tour with LCD Soundsystem and Gwen Stefani and launching her to a new level of stardom. Since then, M.I.A. has released three studio albums, including 2013's Matangi, been nominated for numerous awards, and collaborated with some of music's biggest stars including Jay-Z and Madonna. With a laundry list of hits in her repertoire, it's no surprise she made Rolling Stone's "Best of the Decade" list in the 00's and was named one of the World's 100 Most Influential People by Time Magazine. Back on the road, M.I.A. continues to push the limits as she rocks the mic on her upcoming tour dates.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"M.I.A.'s performance was so sick! Loved the stage, the lights, the colors, and M.I.A.'s rad style and swag!!"

One word sums up this concert, AWFUL. MIA showed up late and then didn't even sing. All you could hear was the sub woofers and the occasional contribution from the DJ.

M.I.A.'s show was like no other

by ihatecomingupwithnames on 9/29/10Terminal 5 - New York

I loved her performance, it was like no other concert I've been to and I've been to many. It was great for her to bring up a few people to dance up on stage with her and Rye Rye. She was straight up amazing, I would definitely be going to her next show in New York City in the future

M.I.A. was M.I.A.- 2 hrs late and terrible

by littledebbiesnackcakes on 9/29/10Terminal 5 - New York

    1) Two hours late due to "electrical outage." And we weren't allowed inside either. 2) First opening act was all glitz and glamor dance and costumes with LOUSY music- first song consisted of "what's up?" "what's up?" "what's up?"... 3) Second opening act was also terrible- 20 minutes of DJ background music. How disrespectful is that to fans to not even have live music playing? 4) Venue was located in the middle of nowhere. Near the water at the remote edge of West Manhattan. 5) Venue lousy once you got there. MICROPHONE DIDN'T WORK. Maya's voice faded in and out the entire concert. Sound qualiterrible. 6) Merch was TERRIBLE. T-shirts looked ugly and like the images were made on my home printer and would wash off the first laundry cycle. 7) Seating was only if you paid for overpriced drinks. Please. 8) No crowdsurfing. Boo. 9) Date was on a MONDAY. I made the effort to go on a weekday, but M.I.A. didn't bother to get a good venue or start on time. 10) So bad I LEFT EARLY. That never happens. One good thing- Maya's little strip tease act from trenchcoat to "fuck google ask me" t-shirt to silk pajamas. No more than that boys, sorry.

M.I.A was AMAZING, the venue not so much

by MizzJune on 9/29/10Terminal 5 - New York

As I imagined I would, I had a lot of fun at the event. RyeRye was amazing, MIA sizzled, and MIA's dj (Asma) was great. However, there were issues with the electricity due to rain and the staff of the venue seemed to not know which way was up from down. Other than that it was great, and I got a free drink ticket for waiting in the rain so it wasn't a completely horrid experience!

    M.I.A. was ... interesting

by LizPickledPeppers on 9/29/10Terminal 5 - New York

Depends on how drunk you get to be honest. I was sober and I'm glad I was. She's horrible at singing like, but is a GREAT performer. She really gets the crowd going!

I have no idea what Maya was thinking when she unplugged her feedback and turned her monitor around. The delay and the unusually short set was appalling. I think both the organizers and M.I.A. are to blame for this really, really sub-par performance.

The performance was good but 90+ minutes delay was inexcusable as was the excuse of "electrical difficulties in the area". Everybody saw right through that. That's twice in a few months time that MIA's show was compromised for some reason or another. At least she wasn't wasted like I heard she was on Governor's Island during the summer. If I were you guys I would drop her because it's no like she gets great attendance.

    Better than Governor's Island

by BlammoBuns on 9/29/10Terminal 5 - New York

...but where was the free ticket M.I.A. promised on her Twitter feed? Whatever. I love M.I.A. and I was glad to be in the audience. She's not exactly a compelling performer, but I don't care, I just wanted to see her.

    Overhyped & overrated "artist"!

by NY010182 on 9/29/10The Terminal - New York

The doors opened at 7pm. Opening act Rye Rye took the stage at 9-9:15pm and she was exciting, talented and energetic. At 10pm DJ Asma took the stage and 15 min later, the so-called headliner took the stage. After waiting for her for over 3 hrs, she only performed for only an hour, playing 9 songs from her 3 albums, and it was disappointing. Someone with 3 albums should play for at least 90 min and give more than just dance moves and crowd chants. For a $40 show, I received a $15 performance. Yes she can rap and dance (if you call what she did on stage dancing), but for such a short setlist, I wanted my money back. Goes to show that hype is the worst enemy for any artist.

    Worst concert ever. She's overrated!

    by NY010182 on 9/29/10Terminal 5 - New York

So the doors opened at 7pm, opening act Rye Rye (who was way better than MIA) went on stage around 9-9:15pm. She performed for 30 min and was extremely energetic, great dancer and very charismatic. Then at 10pm DJ Asma took the stage for about 15 min, then came out the headliner, M.I.A. After spending over 3 hrs standing around for her, she only played 9 songs for 1 hr and that was it. For someone who is so overrated & overhyped as she is, I really expected her to do more than just dance around and ask for the crowd to join her in the songs she was performing. Her dances are very energetic but I don't really understand their form of dancing. For a $40 show, to only play 9 songs from 3 different albums, the show was extremely disappointing

M.I.A. at terminal 5 was bad!!

by bibirose on 9/29/10Terminal 5 - New York

I really like MIA's music, but this concert was forgettable. Rather listen to her at home. She refused to sing any of her hits and the sound quality was really bad!!!!

    M.I.A. Rocked in... Pajamas?

by arrrrlaur on 9/29/10Terminal 5 - New York

I've been a big M.I.A. fan since her first album, but had never been to a concert for an artist with a primarily electonic sound like her's. I was worried I might be let down by an artist just rapping over her own tracks. NOT AT ALL! I loved it! Her energy was so great, and you could really hear the liveness of her performance. Opening act RyeRye was just as fun. Both had bangin backup dancers that really made the overall performance all the better. I love that she seemed to be wearing satin short pajamas, and she certainly danced her ass off. Five stars, and I love her even more now!

    TERRRRRRIIIBBBLLLEEEE

by workingrobot on 9/29/10Terminal 5 - New York

MIA has really lost her edge. She played for 45 minutes (keep in mind shes headlining and has 4 albums out), Plus, this is after a 90 minute delay due to rain/electric problems (funny how it always happens to her) Her latest album features her attempting to sing and in concert, that studio ability to seems to have totally escaped her. She sounded terrible, she muddled her way through a terrible set list and spent half the time being her own 'hype man' over her previously recorded vocals (uh, yeah) Her opener was also terrible.

Best concert I have seen in years! She has the greatest energy and best ideas. Her politics are right on and so is her Esthetics.
