About

M.I.A. IN CONCERT:

M.I.A. has led the way for women in hip-hop ever since her fearless lyrics and gutsy stagewear propelled her to fame in the early '00s. The Academy Award and Grammy Award-nominated rapper is known for pushing the boundaries with her live performances as she mixes jungle and world music with modern rap and electronica amid artistic stage designs. Whether she's performing game-changers like "Paper Planes" or spitting fan favorites like "Galang," the dynamic British artist will treat fans to her hit-filled sets on tour with A$AP Ferg and Elliphant in 2014.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam, M.I.A. got her start as a designer and filmmaker before deciding to pursue her music career full-time in 2002. Experimenting with beats in her bedroom, she released her 2005 debut Arular, which was inspired by her father and their experiences in her childhood home of Sri Lanka. The album was met with universal acclaim, landing her on tour with LCD Soundsystem and Gwen Stefani and launching her to a new level of stardom. Since then, M.I.A. has released three studio albums, including 2013's Matangi, been nominated for numerous awards, and collaborated with some of music's biggest stars including Jay-Z and Madonna. With a laundry list of hits in her repertoire, it's no surprise she made Rolling Stone's "Best of the Decade" list in the 00's and was named one of the World's 100 Most Influential People by Time Magazine. Back on the road, M.I.A. continues to push the limits as she rocks the mic on her upcoming tour dates.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"M.I.A.'s performance was so sick! Loved the stage, the lights, the colors, and M.I.A.'s rad style and swag!!"

Well firstly, I think that she is absolutely amazing. She was completely awesome. I had an amazing time. The show, however started about 2 hours later than it was supposed to. There were free drinks because of it. I just sucks waiting in line for hours. But i think she was well worth it. So much fun!

PROS: she was amazing with such strong energy; I love when you can feel the energy in the air- can't help but move to it. CONS: she was not on that long at all, about an hour and she was late.

MIA & Rye Rye were awesome!

by flexfemme on 9/28/10The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

I had a fabulous time at MIA on Sunday and I danced MAO! The only thing that was a downer was the audio quality... You couldn't hear MIA's voice at times, and she had problems with her monitor... Despite the issues with audio, my friends and I had a great time!

    M.I.A. still my fav

by EmMcKay on 9/28/10The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

Opening up for M.I.A. was Rye Rye, 19 year old singing/dancing/rapping superstar from Baltimore. That girl has got a whole lot of spunk and energy to say the least! AWESOME. Then when M.I.A. came on, you could tell that there was a difference in character. I love M.I.A. regardless and had a great time at the concert, but she seemed kind of down or something. Not too sure what was going on; she kept saying that she couldn't hear herself & to turn the mic up, etc. which resulted in her not really singing that much. My friend and I made it up to the front row at the concert, which was spectacular! M.I.A. pretty much crowd-surfed a bunch of times, let kids come up on stage to dance, signed a CD or two, let us sing into her mic, and even passed around a bottle of Patron during her new hit Teqkilla. Had a blast!

    Phoning it in

by MIAwesome on 9/28/10The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

M.I.A. is my favorite artist. I listen to her constantly, so I was very excited to see her. Unfortunately, this show was very disappointing. She seemed tired and like she was trying to get it done as fast as possible. She sang along to pre-recorded songs the whole time, and there was no encore.

by mattAboy on 9/28/10The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

This was such an excellent show. Amazing energy, felt like a club. Upbeat the entire time, non-stop. M.I.A. is exciting, and her opening act, Rye Rye is energetic and charismatic. If you could see them live..GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The music and showmanship was fantastic! My only gripe is it could have been a longer set for M.I.A.

MIA is more Rockstar then I thought!

by ZEV1 on 9/28/10The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

Great up tempo opening act by Rye Rye, a female "rapper" signed to MIA's label. Show started on time (which is always a plus) set design and back drop designed by MIA herself, there were a couple weirdly dressed background dancers and a little kid who had some crazy skills. It felt like a short set. Not many songs from the new album were performed. Very high intensity show.

The opener Rye Rye was so adorable and did a great job or pumping everyone up for M.I.A. M.I.A. herself was everything I ever expected and more - the crowd went crazy for all the right songs.

    Way too short

by philly1232541 on 9/28/10The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

Tickets ended up being $50.00 and she literally sang 7 songs and was on and off within 45 minutes. Could have been good, but so short that it was a waste of money.

    Not worth it

by LambChopper on 9/28/10The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

After coming out over a half hour late, M.I.A. played less than a 45 minute set. She was awesome while she was out there, but overall, I was disappointed with this event.
