Los Angeles Lakers History

The Lakers are one of the most storied franchises in all of sports. They boast 19 conference titles, 35 division titles and 17 NBA Championships. The franchise started in 1947 as the Minneapolis Lakers in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and predated the official founding of the NBA. At the time, the Lakers were a member of the National Basketball League (NBL). They moved to the Basketball Association of America (BAA) prior to the 1948–49 season. After that season, the NBL and BAA merged to form the NBA. The Lakers dominated the newly formed NBA, winning five of the first six NBA Championships.

Two big decisions in 1960 altered the future of the franchise. First, they selected Jerry West with the No. 2 overall pick in the NBA Draft. Then, the franchise moved to Los Angeles in the same offseason, becoming the NBA's first West Coast team. After several trips to the NBA Finals and trading for Wilt Chamberlain, the Lakers won the NBA Championship in 1971–72, an amazing season that included a 33-game win streak, which is still the NBA record for most consecutive wins. West would go on to become a Hall of Famer, and his silhouette is featured as the NBA's logo.

The Lakers' next era of dominance began in 1979, when they selected Earvin "Magic" Johnson with the No. 1 overall pick. Johnson's unrivaled passing ability allowed the Lakers to play with an up-tempo style that became known as "Showtime." Led by Johnson and fellow Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the Lakers won the NBA Championship in Johnson's rookie season and a total of five titles during the '80s.

The Lakers were led to three consecutive titles between 2000 and 2002 by the legendary duo of Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant, including a run through the 2000–01 playoffs that saw them lose just one game in four series. The franchise entered a short rebuilding period after trading O'Neal in 2004, but Bryant led the Lakers to three consecutive NBA Finals appearances once again, starting in the 2007–08 season. They lost to the Celtics in their first appearance, but responded by winning the next two championships, the second of which came in seven games against the Celtics.

Following the postponement of the 2019-20 NBA season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the team won its most recent NBA Finals in 2020 in the NBA Bubble behind Finals MVP LeBron James and All-Star forward Anthony Davis. In 2023, the Lakers won the inaugural NBA in-season tournament.

  • Good event! (although Lakers haven't won)

by cejaime on 12/5/13STAPLES Center - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

My first time in a NBA Game, and although LA Lakers haven't won, it was a very good event overall. just to say a lot of long lines in food court was a bit annoying due the delay. in section 329 good view of the game.

  • Great Seat if you can get it

by TheDonn on 11/25/13STAPLES Center - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Been to many regular and playoff season games at Staples. The seat I got this time was a a front row floor seat. Not a court seat but the front row of the bleachers. And it was so cool seeing the players so close. I'm used to the 300 level seats. Best part of the night was Rihanna walking down the aisle in front of me.

  • Good experience - LA Lakers

by Belldp on 11/25/13STAPLES Center - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Staple centre is a great venue, was easy and quick to get in. First time I have been there and everything was signposted well. The LA lakers shop was well stocked and great choice of clothes and other items I have long legs so found the seats a bit uncomfortable but was able to leave my seat at any time and have a leg stretch. I have nachos with cheese, cheese was warm and nachos were not stale. Only negative comment. I'm from the UK and wanted a beer they asked for my ID and would not except my UK Photo driving license as a form of ID. They wanted to see a passport. I don't like carrying my passport around every where when I have my driving license as a form of ID. That needs to change!

  • Unforgettable

    by Marie8410 on 11/20/13STAPLES Center - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

I had the most amazing time ever I absolutely loved just being there for the first time everyone was so nice and it looked so clean

  • overpriced

    by Stanley81 on 11/20/13STAPLES Center - Los AngelesRating: 3 out of 5

It was regular season game, so teams did not deliver 100% of their capabilities. Tickets are overpriced -abt 200$ for decent seats. Price would be fine for playoffs only. For regular season should be much cheaper.

  • Kobe or no Kobe, Lakers games still awesome

    by LakersFan525 on 11/16/13STAPLES Center - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

HURRY BACK SOON KOBE! WE MISS YOU! Even w/o Kobe in the lineup, it was still awesome to be at a Lakers game in the awesome Staples Center. This was my second Lakers home game; I still feel like a kid in a candy store when I roam the Staples Center concourse. The game was a blowout, but I'm glad the Lakers won. And it was awesome to hear PA Announcer Lawrence Tanter. I LOVE L.A.!

  • Great time!

    by melon1026 on 11/11/13STAPLES Center - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

I've a lifelong Lakers fan who grew up in Ohio and only moved out to California recently so this was the first time I've been able to go to a Lakers game. It was well worth the wait! The atmosphere was electric and I loved the introductions showing the amazing history of the Lakers. There's not a bad seat in the house and we had a great view even from the upper section. To top it off the Lakers won the game in the last few seconds. What a great experience!

  • Love my Lakers!

by meinteil on 11/9/13Honda Center - AnaheimRating: 5 out of 5

Love seeing the preseason at the Honda Center. It's a breeze to drive there and park, the staff is amazing at The Honda, always helpful and friendly. From the concession to the staff that assists in finding our seats. I appreciate that they have all been trained very very well. The Lakers didn't win nor was Kobe in attendance, but we had great seats and look forward to each year a preseason (affordable) game. Can't wait for next year!

  • Los Angeles Lakers v Utah Jazz

    by none0 on 11/5/13Honda Center - AnaheimRating: 4 out of 5

I'm not from USA and this event was the first basketball game that I enjoyed in US. The organization and game was nice. The attendants of customer service are very polite and helpful. About the game I miss Kobe Bryan if he had played the game would be better. Also I never saw the Lakers girls live presentation, just on TV. It was amazing how the are synchronized! The unique problem I had was related to the crowd traffic in Los Angeles, because of this I took 3 hours from Camarillo to Anaheim instead 1 hour and 30 min as estimated by google maps. So got in the game only in the second period.

  • Not so amazed first timer

by JOMRIEL on 11/5/13STAPLES Center - Los AngelesRating: 1 out of 5

First of all..seating far from your group and alone is not fun at all because there were no available seats online. But when we get there, there were vacant seats so we wonder why.We should have seated together. Then you see that Kobe was not even there and Lakers lost.Wow such a bummer!

  • Lakeshow All Day!!!

    by Goldie17 on 11/4/13STAPLES Center - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Brought a friend for their first game & it was great. Good seats, reasonable concession prices, & good crowd control. Would recommend.
