Los Angeles Lakers History

The Lakers are one of the most storied franchises in all of sports. They boast 19 conference titles, 35 division titles and 17 NBA Championships. The franchise started in 1947 as the Minneapolis Lakers in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and predated the official founding of the NBA. At the time, the Lakers were a member of the National Basketball League (NBL). They moved to the Basketball Association of America (BAA) prior to the 1948–49 season. After that season, the NBL and BAA merged to form the NBA. The Lakers dominated the newly formed NBA, winning five of the first six NBA Championships.

Two big decisions in 1960 altered the future of the franchise. First, they selected Jerry West with the No. 2 overall pick in the NBA Draft. Then, the franchise moved to Los Angeles in the same offseason, becoming the NBA's first West Coast team. After several trips to the NBA Finals and trading for Wilt Chamberlain, the Lakers won the NBA Championship in 1971–72, an amazing season that included a 33-game win streak, which is still the NBA record for most consecutive wins. West would go on to become a Hall of Famer, and his silhouette is featured as the NBA's logo.

The Lakers' next era of dominance began in 1979, when they selected Earvin "Magic" Johnson with the No. 1 overall pick. Johnson's unrivaled passing ability allowed the Lakers to play with an up-tempo style that became known as "Showtime." Led by Johnson and fellow Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the Lakers won the NBA Championship in Johnson's rookie season and a total of five titles during the '80s.

The Lakers were led to three consecutive titles between 2000 and 2002 by the legendary duo of Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant, including a run through the 2000–01 playoffs that saw them lose just one game in four series. The franchise entered a short rebuilding period after trading O'Neal in 2004, but Bryant led the Lakers to three consecutive NBA Finals appearances once again, starting in the 2007–08 season. They lost to the Celtics in their first appearance, but responded by winning the next two championships, the second of which came in seven games against the Celtics.

Following the postponement of the 2019-20 NBA season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the team won its most recent NBA Finals in 2020 in the NBA Bubble behind Finals MVP LeBron James and All-Star forward Anthony Davis. In 2023, the Lakers won the inaugural NBA in-season tournament.

  • Spurs whipped the Lakers!

by RichSpurs on 3/22/14STAPLES Center - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Great game. Close to the visiting bench. Saw some Hollywood and music stars. Anytime the Lakers lose brings a smile to my face. We got some strange looks for the shirts we were wearing. I was born and raised in SA, my wife was born and raised in East LA, daughter born in California.

Driving to the game I knew not to count on a good game because the Lakers havent had the best record and Kevin Durant has been havinf consistant 40 point plus games. For sure I thought OKC would lead by 20 pts the whole game. I went in with an open attitude and just to enjoy the atmosphere. Who knew the game would have been so exciting and so entertaining. Once the Lakers took the lead from OKC I coudn't stay in my seat. Plus, all the Laker fans around me helped a lot with my excitement and joy! Best NBA game I've been to so far.

Great game! Lakers held on to win it and didn't give it up. Too bad team is not all present and healthy. Loved to see Fisher play...he is my favorite all time player, no matter what jersey he is wearing.

  • The Game was an amazing show!

by Guidi on 3/12/14STAPLES Center - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

I´ve never been to one game like this before. As an first expirience was very good. Unfortunatelly the game wasn´t that good but the infra-structure in Staples Center was very nice.

  • Amazing night

by Majken on 3/3/14STAPLES Center - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

The night was amazing! The staff of The Staples Center was nice and very coordinated. Of course it helped that The Lakers won! :-) but the night was absolutely amazing.

Really enjoyed the game. Wish the home team had won. My third NBA game ever. Lakers and Bulls played a great game. Even without the superstars.

  • Security check at the entrance

by TommasoIT on 2/27/14STAPLES Center - Los AngelesRating: 3 out of 5

It's not polite to put your hands in someone else's bag without asking nor wearing gloves. Please teach your staff some good manners.

  • Frustrating

by Belwex on 2/26/14STAPLES Center - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

So easy to judge a game from the stands, but the Lakers need to practice their 3-point shots. The Nets seemed much more organized. Still always fun to see the competition.

  • Unexpected

    by Gum4ever on 2/25/14STAPLES Center - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

Lakers disappointed me. Kobe injures so he didn't show up and actually this was my first to watch NBA in my life. I main reason I bought this ticket which wanted to see Kobe. But also Jeremy Lin from Houston also is one of my favorite basketball player.
