About

The grand British musical tradition of trip hop, popularized in the ‘90s by acts like Portishead and Tricky, is alive and well in 2013 with the success of trip hop trio London Grammar. Just a few months after being featured on Disclosure’s No. 1 album Settle, London Grammar released their debut full length If You Wait in September 2013 to critical acclaim and a No. 2 spot on the UK Albums Chart. Drawing comparisons to Florence Welch for her throaty, brooding vocals, singer Hanna Reid is a commanding presence on the album, delivering her emotionally affecting lyrics over the trip hop beats and dreamy guitarscapes of bandmates Dot Major and Dan Rothman. The album’s four singles include UK Top 40 hits “Strong” and “Wasting My Young Years,” a breakup song featuring Reid’s signature plaintive vocals. Earlier in the year, the band released their debut EP Metal & Dust, which featured the hit single “Hey Now.” On the road in 2013, the band has been wowing ticket buyers with their intimate arrangements and emotionally-charged live concerts, building anticipation for their first US tour in 2014.

They were such an amazing band to just listen to live. Hannah has an amazing voice and, both Dan and Dot, are such amazing musicians. I'm so glad I got to see them in such an intimate venue.

    absolutely incredible

venue-gorgeous band-phenomenal sound quality-perfect light show-none...which was awesome actually. london grammar definitely keeps it clean and polished. simple and awesome. hannah's voice sounds a thousand times better than on their album, which is saying something. the crew for the wiltern were pretty cool, too. i had floor seats and when people would start bleeding into the aisle, they were very chill about moving us back in.

    Incredible Voice!

by EllAySeeAy on 5/21/14The Wiltern - Los Angeles

They were just wonderful. Amazing singer! It's as if you took all the best attributes of Joni Mitchell, Adele, Everything But the Girl, and Beth Orton, and put it into one female vocalist.

Hugely talented new group. Every single song in their set was amazing. They sound even better live, which I didn't think was possible since their album is one of the best I've heard in years.

    Simply amazing

London Grammar is truly incredible. They sounded even better live which is unreal to me as they sound pretty damn good on their album. The venue's uplighting added a ton to the overall experience. A must watch!

    Metal & Dust

by Willhomes71 on 4/12/14Irving Plaza - New York

This was my second time seeing LG, having first attended the small show they did in January at Baby's All Right. Having gained more confidence playing in America, the Irving Plaza show really delivered. Hannah seemed to have a bit of problem with a dry throat but really came through, and Dot and Dan asserted themselves throughout. Their music can be quiet and sedate, it's not the soundtrack to a wild night out, but it really worked in the club setting. My only problems are with Irving Plaza. As usual, they oversell so badly that about 50-75 people have to stand in the hallway because the floor is too crowded. And the nitwit who kept yelling, "I love you Hannah!" really needs to grow up and act like he's seen an attractive woman before. Stop embarrassing yourself, son.

    London Grammer at the Shelter

    by wingnut999 on 4/8/14The Shelter - Detroit

I am sure London Grammar will never play a venue this small again. It was a perfect place for Hannah's voice to overwhelm the crowd. Her deep throaty sound was awesome in such a small space. They are on David Letterman tonight and hope everyone checks them out-staff at the Shelter was awesome, nice place to see intimate show

by Rupp33 on 3/26/14House of Blues San Diego - San Diego

London Grammar was amazing live, I don't think I have ever heard a band sound so vibrant live. Great seeing them in a small venue like House of Blues. If you get a chance, see them and enjoy and amazing new band.

    Incredible!!!!!

London Grammar is an incredible band. They were humble and the event felt personal. Hannah sang her heart out and at some point had to clear her throat because she was outstandingly good. LOVe, love this band….

London Grammar SOUNDS amazing. Her voice is almost better in person, if that is possible. However, they are not very entertaining (except for their musical ability) so I wish they played at venues where there is seating so that we could just kick back and enjoy their amazing sound. (Standing venues are a bad fit, for sure. Also, there were issues with the sound equipment and it looked like she got frustrated. Subsequently, the show was VERY SHORT! That was definitely a let down. I will see them again if they ever come back to town.

Great show, raw and young. Hannah has an extremely powerful voice. Likable and multi talented. Love the upbeat tempo of bongos in between vocals.

London Grammar--Hannah's voice, music both fab

by RomanceAuthor on 3/25/14Vinyl at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas - Las Vegas

Sound acoustics allowed for an excellent appreciation for Hannah's gorgeous voice, which is perfectly complemented by the instruments and London Grammar's overall sound. Though the performance started a bit stiff (the young trio appearing slightly uncomfortable and possibly nervous in front of the crowd), they warmed up to the fans who were obviously familiar with their music. Scanning the crowd in the front at one point, I noticed those pressed up against the barrier between the floor and the stage looking up at Hannah with glazed eyes of adoration. And why not? Few groups deliver music this fabulous so early in their careers. Polished, but still interesting balance of instruments and voice, along with compelling lyrics. If you can catch them live during their American tour, do it. highasakite: Norwegian band supported--unusual sound, weakened by repetitive, simplistic lyrics and equally repetitive song structure that started soft, grew to a noisy mash of instruments and voices crescendo (though lyrics were unintelligible by then as drums dominated), and died back to soft sound for finish. Group's sound has potential, but lacks the complexity necessary to interest this music lover.
