About

Liz Phair in Concert

With the release of her 1993 debut album, Exile in Guyville, Liz Phair was quickly recognized as one of indie rock's most talented and exciting new songwriters. The album was praised extensively by the press and won Phair an enthusiastic following among alternative rockers. Liz Phair, who studied art at Ohio's Oberlin College, began making home-recorded tapes while living in Chicago. These lo-fi recordings caught the attention of the indie rock community, and soon Phair signed with Matador (who released her debut album). Phair went on to release several albums in following years and played at the famed female music festival Lilith Fair. Hit songs from Phair's career include "Supernova," "Why Can't I?," "Extraordinary" and "Everything to Me."

    Good show

by jbollinger on 1/21/11Bluebird Theater - Denver

Over all Liz put on a good show with a mix of old familiar songs and a couple off of her new album Funstyle. She can rock the house and get the crowd excited. Maybe I am getting old, but the sound system was too loud and the distortion too much for my taste. But I did enjoy the show.

    Liz Phair

    by Ski67 on 1/21/11Bluebird Theater - Denver

I've been a fan since Exile and was excited to see her for the first time in Denver. She had a great set list and was very personable and interactive with the crowd which was the highlight for me. Her voice was far more confident with the new music which was a little disappointing. The band was fine but there was no real connection between the two and they didn't seem overly passionate about her music. So, it made sense to find out it was the first time she'd ever performed with them. I doubt I would pay to see her perform again but am glad I finally got to hear her live.

    Best Liz Phair Concert Ever!

by kbdaisy on 1/21/11Bluebird Theater - Denver

Awesome show! Liz played mostly Exile in Guyville, Whip-smart, and White Chocolate Space Egg. She sounded amazing! I've seen Liz in concert probably 10 times and this was the best I've seen her!

great artist. great venue. great night! opening band not so good - couldn't hear the singing over the five other guys on stage jamming their hearts out, each in their own little worlds.

Liz Phair at the Paradise, as expected was great! She did plenty of old songs and a few new ones. Liz looked and sounded great. Also still has her sense of humor. I would go see her again if she was playing tomorrow. The rest of the band was also good.

    Liz Phair circa 1994

by Cartknocker on 12/15/10Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORK

For an artist embraced, denounced, lauded, trounced and applauded, Liz Phair is, and after 16 years of being a fan, the same at the end of the day: shy, sharp, charismatic, coy, and utterly uncomfortable in a crowd -- that's why I adore her. She remains true to herself and her audience.

The good was in the middle

by RHNH on 12/15/10Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORK

The opening act was among the worst I have ever heard. Whiney singer, whiney guitar, whiney tunes of self-congratulatory self-flagellation. Phair's short (55 minute) set of her own standards from her band was fine. A lot of sing-along and happiness for an audience clearly familiar with her ouevre. But when the opening act came out to join Phair for the encore, it was time to beat a hasty retreat before his vocal or guitar whining could ruin the evening. One advantage -- no competition for a cab.

Liz was in absolutely top form, rocking with a great band to her best songs all night to an adoring crowd who inspired her to increasingly better moments of interaction.

Always like a Liz Phair show

by saddith on 10/12/10El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

I am a big fan of Liz Phair, and have seen her many times in many venues. I have always liked the El Rey, because it is a small theater so you get an up close and personal show. Liz Phair did a great job, played a lot of good tunes that I thoroughly enjoyed. The biggest drawback for me was the El Rey itself this time. Drinks were outrageously priced ( I kind of expected it, but it was still disappointing) and the music mix was poor so her entire set sounded muddy. I am not sure if it was the mixer or the acoustics of the place. It is standing room only, although they did have some seats along the wall you could sit in if you got there early enough. Otherwise, great show as usual, and even the opening act was funny and entertaining. If you get a chance to check out Bushwalla, he is worth having a drink to while waiting for your headliner.

    Phair great, sound was not

by Anonymous on 10/11/10El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

Liz Phair rocked as hard as ever. It felt like her show was a little shorter than I have seen before... couldn't believe they finished set so soon... altho quickly came out for a substantial encore. Pretty good coverage of her previous albums, and just one new song, if I remember correctly. Downside... sound engineering. Liz's vocals were totally overpowered by the instruments. If I hadn't known her lyrics so well, I wouldn't have known what the heck she was singing. Found I wanted earplugs at times (note... did NOT have that problem with opening band).

    Liz still rocks!

by Anonymous on 10/10/10El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

I've followed Liz Phair since 1993 and love her live shows. It's like watching an old friend narrate your lives with a totally female and rockin' sensibility.

I had an amazing time at this show. Liz was in fine form and she did an excellent job -- I liked that she played a real mix of all her music. She did pieces from Exile, Whipsmart, WCSE, the self-titled pop album -- there was something for everyone. I loved that there was a really diverse audience out that night: there were gay men, lots of lesbians, families, grandparents, straight couples. Some people even brought their kids with them (which I thought was a bit inappropriate, given the nature of some of Liz's songs, but there you go.) The opening act, Bushwalla, was pretty good. I'm not familiar with them and I wasn't inspired to buy their CD afterwards, but they certainly put on a damn great show. The lead singer was very charismatic and he helped amp up the crowd for Liz. My only two complaints? The fact that Liz didn't get onstage until close to 10 PM (when most of us had been there since 8 PM.) I know it's rock 'n roll, but it was a little irritating -- especially since the El Rey is a standing room-only venue. My feet were pretty tired afterward from standing for three hours! I was also surprised that Liz didn't do any pieces from Somebody's Miracle. Maybe next tour?

    Liz Phair was amazing!

by Anonymous on 10/10/10El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

Liz looks hotter than ever. She gave us what we came to see. I hadn't had heard any of the new stuff but 'Bangladesh' rocked live. She was relaxed and fun and I can't wait to bring a big group of friends to see her next time she's in LA. She should do more gigs.
