I've never been to opera, it was long, and in another language. However, the singers were absolutely incredible. How anyone can sing at that caliber for that long is beyond me. I was completely mesmerized for all 3 1/2 hours!

    Le Nozze de Figaro

by Ineke on 3/11/12Modell Performing Arts Center at the Lyric - Baltimore

Veyr enjoyable evening.Caitlyn Lynch ( Countessa Almaviva) had power and performed a very soulful Dove sono. Daniel Morris gave a very vivacious FIgaro. Janinah Burnett as Susanna was a little light in the upper registere but the scene play was fine and having an African American Susanna (maid) adds class and race implications to the plot (this has been done in the past) The other parts were all serviceable if sometimes a bit stiff and the mouvment staid (at least on opening night). There were some glitches when the orchestra and singers were off a few beats for a bar or three or more and there were one or two lightling changes which did not seem to happen (Act one when in pensive mood blue lights failed to come on) A nice touch was tghat the Baltimore audience did not run out at the first curtain call and gave the cast a standing O.

Good voices, strong orchestra, a well crafted set and excellent staging. If you can catch the last performance you will not be disappointed.

Good: I really liked how the stage was at a slight angle so that the audience could see the entire set. The star of the night was THE COUNTESS. She had the most incredible saprano and delivered it so effortlessly. After her solo, she had a very LONG applause. Wanted to hear more of just her. Very enjoyable comedy for the novice opera enthusiast to the very experienced. Could improve: The translation of Italian was adjacent to the top of the stage. Was in 2nd row and had to look up throughout the opera. My neck HURT after the first act. Recommend placing the translation right below the stage. Sometimes the singing got drowned by the orchestra; if there were some stage microphones that might have helped.
