I honestly didn't know what to really expect from British Songstress Laura Mvula. I admit...I wasn't too familiar with her work other than a few songs I knew which I liked very much.
I was undecided about going to see her...until the ladies of KING announced they were on the bill. Then,I was sold. I had seen KING before at a previous event at Central Park Summer Stage upon their introduction to the world. They were a bit unpolished and a tad nervous, then. All that was gone. These ladies blossomed to the performers they were meant to be. At that point,I was ready to go...but I thought let me stay a while longer and see Laura Mvula perform a bit. From the intro,I was hypnotized. Intricate subtleties and raw power flowed seamlessly from one song to the next. Classically trained, she knew how to perform. But her secret weapon was her band. They were a six piece set, including Ms. Mvula, that resonated with the massiveness of an entire orchestra. i was thoroughly impressed and stupefied in my haste to depart so soon. Serves me right. i will not make that mistake about Ms. Mvula ever again. And neither should you.
