I love in Europe, and I have seen The Merry Widow in both German and Italian on several occasions. The Spanish version in Miami was delightful, and I would highly recommend it to everyone. As a matter of fact, i spoke to Ms. Pili de la Rosa to see about the possibility of bringing this Spanish version to Rome, through the auspices of the Latin American Embassies here, or through the Istituto Latinoamericano. I really think it would be a great hit.
The scenery of the play was nicely set, but the lady playing Ana, the main character, was to my taste terrible. The one paying Valencienne would have been better in that role, since she was taller and slimmer and blonde, which is how the Merry Widow is described. The tenor was very good, and the other characters too. But not her. She was a disappointment to me.
Good voices, fair costumes, bad dancers, poor scenery, good choice of event. It is not a zarzuela it is an operetta written by Franz Lehar from Austria.
Entire cast was superb. The casting was done with expertse. The soprano was outstanding and so was the tenor. Chorus and ballet group were awesome. The orchestra was fabulous a and very well conducted. A zarzuela to be seen and enjoyed. The trip from Tampa to Miami was well worth it.
A must see next time in town. The sopranos had amazing voices as well as the tenors.
