LA Tennis Challenge was SO FUN!

by JayB849305 on 3/6/13Pauley Pavilion - Los Angeles

This was a great event. It was my first chance to watch professional tennis and I had a great time. The players were joking around and having fun which made it a joy to watch. Also, they had Rainn Wilson announce the end of the match and he was hilarious! There were a couple snafus (net breaking, lights turning off), but these just added to the lighthearted vibe. Also, the event was for a great cause! I would definitely go again. My only recommendation is that it would be worth it to splurge for tickets close to the court. General admission had cramped seating and it was hard to find seats together. *(But don't sit right behind the players, because you will literally get hit in the face with serves!)

    LA Tennis Challenge

by cronyman on 3/6/13Pauley Pavilion - Los Angeles

After dealing with Westwood traffic and parking (whew!), it was excellent fun. ($52 for two, plus $11 parking) Thrilling, yet casual tennis. The sets were limited in length to the 8 game format..Lots of variety - sets with Hass vs Blake, Djokavic vs Fish, and best of all, doubles with Dokavic/Sampras(!) vs the Bryan Brothers(!).. Wow! Some Celebs horsing around made the evening that much more fun. We easily found comfortable seats in general admission with great visibility of the court. To top it off, it raised funds for autistic children and promoted the return of an annual LA Tennis Tournament.

The actor / comedian who was invited to umpire was very tasteless and quite frankly spoiled the evening for us. A REALLY bad idea!

    fun night at Pauley

by Rojay77 on 3/6/13Pauley Pavilion - Los Angeles

this was more fun than a real tennis tournament in my opinion. it was fast paced and i got to see a lot of starts. Rain Wilson was a guest umpire and he was funny. the only downside is that they only hit tennis balls to the crowd on the sides and ends. what about the corners!! we paid for tix too! get us involved!

    Awesome event

by 10sfutr on 3/6/13Pauley Pavilion - Los Angeles

What a great and spontaneous night. Even though there were numerous hiccups like net breaking, lights flashing, and balls hitting fans behind court it made it all the more enjoyable. You could tell since it was run by players and there friends the Pros really WANTED to be there and it showed. Djokovic and his personality really humanizes the sport which otherwise appears robotic to the casual observer. We need more of this! The UCLA students who came were awesome. Next time maybe do more to recognize UCLA students.

    Rainn Wilson almost ruined experience

by gatorsocal on 3/6/13Pauley Pavilion - Los Angeles

Tennis was great! Net breaking in first match caused delay, but no one's fault. Bringing Rainn Wilson on to ump in the doubles match just about ruined the experience; totally unnecessary and disruptive to the tennis. No need for a celebrity host! Lights cutting out in 3rd match was bad and forced unfortunate early end to event.

    LA Tennis Challenge was magical!

by Tennisisawesome on 3/6/13Pauley Pavilion - Los Angeles

This was the first time we went to a professional tennis exhibition and so we didn't know what to expect. Everything went great, the tickets, parking at UCLA, our seats were amazing and everyone was friendly and helpful. We couldn't believe we were so close to the players and my daughter got autographs from Novak Djokovic and Bob and Mike Bryan. She even got a picture with Pete Sampras and was a winner in the charity raffle winning Maria Sharapova's signed racquet! What an amazing and magical night! Thank you Mardy Fish and Justin Gimelstob for a great event and please do it again next year!

    Off to a shaky start...

by MMpire on 3/6/13Pauley Pavilion - Los Angeles

Let's make this very clear - I LOVE TENNIS. I love tennis in Los Angeles. That said, this event was poorly organized, wrought with technical problems, and generally a waste of time and money. The athletes that donated their time and talents to this cause were eclipsed by every kind of imaginable problem on behalf of the organizers - stoppages in play due to bad equipment, poor announcing, and finally a blackout of the arena took center stage here (not the tennis). I drive 3 hours round trip to see 30 minutes of tennis and 90 minutes of technical delays. It pains me to give this event - for such a worthy cause - such poor marks.

It was fun but they need to fix a couple of things

by DLFMan on 3/6/13Pauley Pavilion - Los Angeles

The event started 15 minutes late. It was great seeing the tennis. The interaction of the tennis players and the crowd was great. Rainn Wilson from the TV show, The Office, took over the umpire's chair. He was funny at first but started to get a little old. He was interrupting the tennis, the reason everyone was there, from some of the greatest players that have ever played the game. Because of his interruptions the doubles set was cut short. Not only that, the lights went out and the players had to play in near darkness. The first match, between Blake and Hass, was also good but the net came down and they had to exchange the net. This caused a delay and forced them to shorten the set they were playing. I would go again, as I'm an avid tennis fan, but I hope that they fix the things that went wrong in the future. P.S. Sampras still has it. I'd bet he'd still beat most of the players on the tour.

    Great night

by Chrissiepooh on 3/6/13Pauley Pavilion - Los Angeles

Had a great time at the tennis, a couple of glitches. Tommy Haas broke the net leading to a delay which meant that match was shorter, then during the doubles match the lights failed, which obviously made it hard for the players to see and also for us to see. And made that match shorter. Oh, and then there was Rainn Wilson who took over the umpire's job- funny for 2 minutes then not :( Loved seeing the tennis stars, especially Pete Sampras who was always one of my favourites, Novak amazing as ever, and the Bryan Brothers. Good to see James Blake and Tommy Haas as well. Not to mention all the Hollywood star spotting- not that I'm very good at that, but Bruce Willis was there amongst many others, good to see them supporting. All in all a great evening, not to be missed, look forward to next year's event!

    Embarrassing

by BPNGP on 3/6/13Pauley Pavilion - Los Angeles

Net breaks, an actor mocks play from umpire chair, the lights go out. Two of the three matches are cut short.....the paying fans deserve better than this!

Unforgettable! So many greats, in one venue!

by TennisTaxiMom on 3/6/13Pauley Pavilion - Los Angeles

To be able to take our son to an event to see so many tennis Giants in one place was great. We drove three hours to get to the match and didn't get home until after 2:00am. It was well worth it. As a young tennis player he got to see his idols (the Bryons Bros.) play up close, and interacting with the fans. Simply fantastic!

    LA Tennis should continue

by RevGW on 3/6/13Pauley Pavilion - Los Angeles

It was a creative and fun tennis event. The players enjoyed themselves -- and played some good tennis too. Djokovic had the right tone -- great tennis and sense of humor. But... keep Rainn Wilson out of the umpire's chair.

    Tennis was Great, but.....

by Ken12517 on 3/6/13Pauley Pavilion - Los Angeles

The tennis action was fantastic, and seeing Djokovic play for the first time was memorable. But what was forgettable was the actor/comedian who played umpire during the doubles match. Very annoying. Also, this was the first year of the event, so event planners need to work on the parking situation - it took almost an hour to park when we arrived at the UCLA campus. And the event planners need to make sure the equipment works - the net on the court came down and the lights went out which the players had to play through. But overall, I would attend this event again - it was fun.

LA tennis challenge was so much fun!

by ConcertRewind on 3/6/13Pauley Pavilion - Los Angeles

Despite some technical difficulties, the event was fun and star filled. Since this was my first professional tennis match, it was exciting to see how fast the ball goes. Loved watching the doubles event.
