About

LA OREJA DE VAN GOGH IN CONCERT:

Spanish indie pop outfit La Oreja de Van Gogh has been winning over fans around the world with their romantic songwriting and dreamy live shows for the past two decades. In concert frontwoman Leire Martínez delivers her poetic lyrics with infectious warmth, radiating passion and emotion as she casts an amorous spell over the crowd with her rich, powerful voice. Martínez competed in the Spanish version of reality talent competition The X Factor before replacing former La Oreja de Van Gogh singer Amaia Montero in 2008, and the impressive performance chops she brings to the table have enhanced the band's live shows ever since. As Martínez works her magic, the rest of the band sets an uplifting mood with energetic bass, guitar, keys, and drums. The result is a stirring set of Spanish-language pop ballads that transcend language barriers and appeal directly to the heart.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

La Oreja de Van Gogh was formed in 1998 by four college students from San Sebastián, Spain. After cutting their teeth playing covers of bands like U2 and Nirvana, they started penning their own songs and won a local pop music contest. The prize was studio time to record a four-song EP, and the resulting collection garnered the attention of Sony Music. The band made their debut on the label in 1998 with Dile al Sol, a Spanish chart hit that ultimately sold more than 800,000 copies. Their rise continued with the albums El Viaje de Copperpot (2000) and Lo Que Te Conté Mientras Te Hacías La Dormida (2003), both of which sold more than two million copies worldwide thanks to international hits like "Rosas" and "La Playa." In 2006 the band won a Latin Grammy for Best Pop Album by a Duo or Group for their album Guapa, but the following year original frontwoman Amaia Montero left to pursue a solo career. Leire Martínez stepped in to fill her shoes in 2008, making her recording debut with the band later that year on the album A Las Cinco en el Astoria. Since then the new lineup has continued to tour the world, proving they're as fantastic as ever with Martínez on board.

    LODVG, everything I expected!

This show was unbelievable. I danced, jumped and sang the entire show. Leire is so good and worthy of Amaia's torch. She definitely sang and poured out her heart for all of us. The playlist was good. Covered most of their catalog and played a hefty amount of songs from their new album, Cometas Por El Cielo, which is excellent by the way. All in all, very satisfied with the show. I hope to see them again in the future.

Leire is not the perfect replacement for Amaia

by Turannos on 1/28/12Manhattan Center Grand Ballroom - New York

It could be that the band has just gotten old, but the energy at the show was really low. The new songs are not as good as the old stuff that Amaia wrote, and you could tell from crowd participation that they really preferred the old stuff. 5 years ago, even my parents loved the show. Today, I couldn't wait to leave.
