Kodie Shane in Concert
Kodie Shane is one of hip-hop's most promising up-and-comers, mainly because she's one of the genre's most unique talents. The Atlanta-based musician, who was born Kodie Williams, wields both a powerful R&B croon and a low-key rapping style (often in the same song), which gives her music a passionate, personal touch. This eclecticism is evident on Shane's major-label full-length debut, Young HeartThrob. In addition to a laid-back collaboration with pal Trippie Redd, the album nods to reggae, R&B, and soul, in addition to hip-hop.
Born in 1998, Shane grew up in a musical family. Her older sister, Brandi, was in the R&B troupe Blaque. Her dad was in a Detroit-based vocal group and her aunt is Cherrelle, known for the R&B hit "I Didn't Mean to Turn You On."
Although Shane grew up a fan of mainstream hip-hop stars (including Bow Wow, Ashanti, Ja Rule, 50 Cent, and Ludacris), she was more interested in carving out a niche of her own. By the time she hit adolescence, she was recording and uploading songs to SoundCloud. Shane's star rose even more once she linked up with Lil Yachty's Sailing Team. In fact, her exuberant appearance on the ringleader's 2016 cut "All In" paved the way for future solo success.
That same year, she released "Hold Up," a collaboration with Lil Uzi Vert and Lil Yachty. And then there was the EP Zero Gravity, which featured Lil Yachty appearing on a re-do of the early cut "Sad." These were followed by a self-released 2017 album, Big Trouble Little Jupiter, and the accompanying 2017 Zero Gravity tour. In 2019, Shane continued this momentum with the Young HeartThrob World Tour. Live, Shane's confident stage presence reflects her wise-beyond-her-years approach to music, as well as raw musical talent that signals great things are ahead.
