Cacophonous Calamity
by Knox ABBA fan on 4/18/23Knoxville Civic Auditorium - KnoxvilleRating: 1 out of 5ABBA with the KSO on 4/15/23 - I adore ABBA, love the KSO, and have seen quite a few concerts at the Civic Auditorium over the years. However, the sound mixing at this show was absolutely horrendous - whenever the vocalists hit any higher notes (which is often in ABBA songs!) there was an incredibly loud buzzing sound that sounded a bit like blown speakers. My husband and I left before intermission, and found a man sitting in the lobby; he had left the show for the same reason we had.
I reached out to a friend who works as an audio engineer, and his guess was that the person mixing the show had lost their high frequency hearing, and that an older audience would be unable to hear what was happening. (The crowd that night seemed to be mostly seniors. My husband and I are both in our 40s, as was the other person who left.) If the KSO wants to attract a "younger" crowd, they should consider having someone with intact hearing at sound check.
