This is one of me favorite musicals. I have watched the movie dozens of times and saw it on stage several times. I will always love the story and the score! However -- this was a weak production. Sorry to say because I support the Reprise series and have been happy with their productions most of the time. I left at intermission because I couldn't take it any more. It lacked personality and pizazz. A couple of the leads had sensational voices, but the Fred character, who holds the show together, lacked charisma, charm and strength. It just fizzled. My mother fell asleep, and she loves musicals. I hate walking out of a show, but I had no choice.
i was very disappointed in the show. i felt that they really miscast katharine and petruchio. it seemed as if they had been looking for liz taylor and richard burton look alikes. lesli margherita's voice just didn't make it in "wunderbar." she was all over the place. they seemed far too old, as did sean martin hingston. he looked more like he'd be a grandfather to those girls. the stand out was meg gillentine, who was great vocally and an excellent dancer. i do like shows at the reprise and have memories of a fabulous "they're playing our song" so i'll keep trying you again.
'Kiss Me Kate' is my favorite Cole Porter musical but it is VERY dated. To be successful, a revival really needs some updating -- which this one lacked. As for the rest: the leads were a bit stilted, the supporting cast better; the gangsters were terrifically amusing. Disappointing for a professional production at $70/ticket + service charges.
