Awesome, awesome show. The sound didn't seem entirely programed at first, but by the end of Another Bag of Bones (second song), the night was perfect. His voice was better live than on record, and that charisma that makes him one of the most relatable guys in music was apparent all night. Performed several covers, from Liz Phair to Modest Mouse, and even previewed several songs from his upcoming LP "Between the Concrete and Clouds," due to be released this year. He was hilarious, interacted with the crowd all night, and you could tell how hard of a worker he is with his music. He puts every bit of himself into his performances, and he manages to seamlessly improv hot-button issues (Japanese disasters, Wisconsin protests, etc.) into his songs. With his involvement of the crowd and high-energy stage presence, Kevin Devine is easily one of the best frontmen, and overall performers, I have ever seen.
The openers, River City Extension, also converted the entire audience, most of us unfamiliar with the group, into fans with a high-energy, passionate set that included new songs, and songs off of their debut album "River City Extension and the Unmistakable Man."
I can not recommend this tour, or these two separate artists, highly enough.
