About

Kamasi Washington is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and bandleader born and raised in Los Angeles. His three bodies of work to date--The Epic; Harmony of Difference, an EP originally commissioned for the 2017 Whitney Biennial; and Heaven and Earth--are among the most acclaimed of this century. As Told To G/D Thyself, his short film companion to Heaven and Earth, debuted at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival to widespread acclaim. In 2020, Washington scored the Michelle Obama documentary Becoming, earning Emmy and Grammy nominations for his work. Also in 2020, Washington co-founded the supergroup Dinner Party with longtime friends and collaborators Terrace Martin, Robert Glasper and 9th Wonder--their EP Dinner Party (Dessert) was subsequently nominated for a Grammy for Best Progressive R&B Album. In 2021, Washington contributed a cover of Metallica's "My Friend of Misery" to the band's Metallica Blacklist covers project. Washington has toured the world over and collaborated and shared stages with Kendrick Lamar, Florence + the Machine, Herbie Hancock--with whom he will curate the Hollywood Bowl Jazz Fest for the second year in a row--and many more. His new album Fearless Movement, inspired by dance and the birth of his first daughter, is out May 3rd on Young.

    Great show

by Scotty B on 3/5/20Saint Andrews Hall - Detroit

Kamasi and his band are a generational talent that bring jazz into the 21st century, mixing it with hip hop and R&B. Amazing show. Everyone should go see this band!

Simply amazing, just as I thought it would be.

by RA2 on 3/1/20Big Night Live - Boston

I have wanted to see Kamasi Washington for some time now, but have just never been able to make it happen. Finally being able to watch one of the most innovative voices in jazz was all I hoped it would be a more. The opening band, Really From, was an interesting act, that did an outstanding job priming the audience. It was Washington's set, however, that really did me in. The incredible display of musicianship that was inspirational to me both as a player and composer. His music is incredible, but there is another element, spiritual perhaps, that pervades his music and performance and it's hard not to notice it. The highlight for me was the last number, Fists of Fury (my favorite track off of Heaven and Earth). Musically/lyrically powerful but, again, there was another level where the crowd really connected spiritually to the message of the song (check it out if you don't know it). Amazing. This was also the first time at Big Nite Live for me and I have to say it's an impressive venue to see a show. Great sound and visibility. Good sized but still small enough to feel intimate.

    2nd time

by Isa on 2/29/20State Theatre - Portland

It was truly a spiritual experience! The music was utterly captivating to say the least. There were so many moments the entire audience wasn’t moving a muscle we were all so hypnotized with the passion that grasped us all. It was my second time seeing them and I was brought to tears once again. I’m so glad to have also seen Kamari’s father come join the group. It was truly amazing to see how they interacted and the joy his father had while watching his some was so very touching and moving. I’ve also never ever in my life seen such a talented drummer! Woah. Jaw dropping. Namaste y’all 🙏🏽

Awesome show, started way too late

by GWBasic on 2/27/20Big Night Live - Boston

Kamasi Washington is one of the greats of our era, and he puts on an awesome party. He's on par with Miles Davis and Dave Brubek, and I'm thrilled that I could see him so early in his career. Even cooler, he shared the stage with his father. One very minor point: The show started extremely late for a Monday night. Doors opened at 8, but Kamasi didn't come on until 10. I had to leave at 11, in the middle of Kamasi's set.

    The Magnificent Kamasi Washington

by Jackye on 2/24/20Howard Theatre - Washington

For this gig, every musician on the stage was magnificent - all chosen as such by their leader Kamasi. And he gave everyone one of them his or her opportunity to display their magnificence for the audience's pleasure. In addition to musical prowess, Kamasi shares his thoughts about how to be in the world - loving and giving as members of a community - and how that is expressed in his music. I feel blessed to engage in Kamasi music events. Thank you!

    An Amazing Journey

    by C. D. on 2/24/20Kings Theatre - Brooklyn

It was one of the best concerts that I’ve ever experienced. Kamasi and the band gave us the opportunity to go on a voyage with them as opposed to performing for us.

The band was amazing. Such high energy and the musicianship second to none. The security, ushers and others working at The Kings Theatre were very professional and very helpful. Great night all around

Kamasi Washington at the Howard Theater

by DCDAD on 2/22/20Howard Theatre - Washington

The music and the musicians were the main event, but being at Howard Theater to hear them was a special treat. Staff at the venue were welcoming and well-organized. The show started (nearly) at the call time. The acoustics and lighting couldn't have been better. I am so glad to have been there to hear Kamasi Washington and his (8-piece) band. Among the talented musicians were his dad, Rickey Washington, Ryan Porter, and collaborator-lyricist-singer Patrice Quinn. Their song marrying the words of Ossie Davis's eulogy for Malcolm X with music by Terrance Blanchard was an emotional high point for the show.

    Kamasi is Amazing!

by Soulfulmover on 2/26/19Apollo Theater - New York

The Apollo’s venue is small and there really no bad seat in the house. We were in the 2nd row. It was a real experience and treat to see him live! I will be sure to see him every single time he’s on the east coast. Thank you Afropunk!

    Couldn't get into it

    by bnatural415 on 7/28/18Chene Park - Detroit

Initially, I came to see Zo and Carmen Rodgers. I had no idea who Kamasi Washington was. I tried my best to get into it, but just couldn't take it and left early. I will give he an his band credit for originality, but just wasn't my cup of tea. I'm giving 3 stars because of Zo and Carmen Rodgers, but I think they could have performed a few more songs or they actually could have been the headliner.
